PREPOSITIONS: IN & ON

Read the brochure about San Martin de los Andes and find the prepositions in and on. What can
you say about them from this context? (Think about MEANING, FORM and USE).

San Martín de los Andes is located in the south-west of Neuquén Province, in the
north of Argentinean Patagonia. In the downtown area you can find a variety of
tourist facilities like hotels, inns and hostels, restaurants, chocolate shops, ATMs

and exchange bureaus.

On the coast of Lacar Lake, you will find the main attractions. When it’s warm you
can go kayaking or sailing on the lake. You can also go fly-fishing in Pocahullo
Brook or just go hiking in the mountains. On the outskirts of the town, there’s
Cotesma Nature Reserve where you can go bird-watching.
If you are fit, Lanin National Park offers many activities. You can go
climbing on Lanin Volcano. The views are really breath-taking.

Putting New Zealand on the map: The North and South Islands

New Zealand lies in the Pacific Ocean, 1,600 km to the east of Australia. It consists of two
large islands and a number of smaller ones. It´s similar in size to the United Kingdom but it
only has a population of about 3.8 million people. Most of them live in the North Island and
over one million in Auckland, which is the country´s largest city. New Zealand capital is
Wellington.

The south Island is a little larger than the North Island and it´s famous for its Southern Alps.
You might think you were in Switzerland, not New Zealand. The eastern side of the Alps is dry
but the west coast has a lot of rainfall and magnificent forests, lakes, mountains and glaciers.
Christchurch is the largest city in the South island. It´s smaller than Auckland but has good
international travel links.

New Zealand´s Landscape The main characteristic of the landscape is its diversity: mountains,
lakes, rivers, beaches, hills, volcanoes, rainforests and fjords are all contained in quite a small
area. From the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park to the cliffs of Fjordland, New Zealand´s
thirteen national parks contain an amazing range of scenery, beautiful walking tracks and
( various plants and animals that are not found in other parts of the world.) Endemic / endemico

Now, we´ll travel nearer. We´ll go to Punilla Valley: TOURISM AT THE HEART
OF THE COUNTRY. Read the text.

Córdoba has a lot to offer to tourists but, without doubt, it is famous for its hills of incredible
beauty and incomparable fresh air. Córdoba has three ranges of hills. Sierra Grande, the
longest and highest, is located in the centre of the province. Sierra Chica is located to the
West and Sierra de la Guasapampa to the East. Punilla Valley is between Sierra Chica and
Sierra Grande and is the most popular tourist area in the hills.

Villa Carlos Paz is one of the most important tourist resorts in the province. It is on Lago San
Roque (only 35 km from the capital city). It has a population of 46, 000 and it accommodates
20,000 people. Its facilities range from four stars to small B&Bs.

There is a lot to do in Carlos Paz during the day: trekking, horse riding, sailing, motor boating
and all kinds of water sports in the lake, nature walks or shopping tours. At night it offers many
restaurants, pubs, discos and a casino.

Other important locations on the Camino de Punilla are

COSQUIN: It is famous for its Annual National Folklore Festival. You can take a chair-lift to the
top of the Pan de Azúcar Cerro (1,260) and enjoy the views over Punilla Valley.

LA FALDA: It is the ideal centre to enjoy the peace and quiet of the hills. From the town you
can take trekking and horseriding excursions to Huerta Grande, a bathing resort with medicinal
waters or to Valle Hermoso or the Olaén Waterfalls.

LA CUMBRE: Apart from trout fishing, you can do conventional or unconventional sports there,
from swimming, golf and tennis to hang- gliding or paragliding.

Read about Punilla Valley and answer the questions.

1. Where is Punilla Valley located?

2. How many inhabitants does Villa Carlos Paz have?

3. What activities can tourists do at night?

4. How can you get to the top of Pan de Azúcar Hill?

THE KODKOD

The kodkod (Leopardus guigna), also called güiña, is the smallest cat in the Americas. It lives
primarily in central and southern Chile and marginally in adjoining areas of Argentina. Its area
of distribution is small compared to the other South-American cats. In 2002,
the IUCN classified the kodkod as Vulnerable as the total effective population size may be
fewer than 10,000 mature individuals, with a declining trend due to habitat and prey base loss
and persecution, and no subpopulation having an effective population size larger than 1,000
mature breeding individuals.
The kodkod has a small head, large feet, and a thick tail. An adult weighs 2 to 2.5
kilograms, with a typical length of 37 to 51 centimetres, a short 20 to 25 centimetres tail, and a
shoulder height of about 25 centimetres
The coat has a base color ranging from brownish-yellow to grey-brown. The body is decorated
with dark spots, with a pale underside and a ringed tail. The ears are black with a white spot,
while the dark spots on the shoulders and neck almost merge to form a series of dotted
streaks. Melanistic kodkods with spotted black coats are quite common.
Kodkods are strongly associated with mixed temperate rainforests of the southernAndean and
coastal ranges, particularly the Valdivian and Araucaria forests of Chile, which is characterized
by the presence of bamboo in the understory. They prefer evergreen temperate
rainforest habitats to deciduous temperate moist forests, sclerophyllous scrub and coniferous
forests. They are tolerant of altered habitats, being found in secondary forest and shrub as well
as primary forest, and on the fringes of settled and cultivated areas.
Kodkods are equally active during the day as during the night, although they only venture into
open terrain under the cover of darkness. During the day, they rest in dense vegetation ...
They are excellent climbers, and easily able to climb trees more than a meter in diameter.
They are terrestrial predators of birds, lizards and rodents…
Male kodkods maintain exclusive territories 1.1 to 2.5 square kilometres in size, while females
occupy smaller ranges of just 0.5 to 0.7 square kilometres.
THE CHUCAO

The chucao (Scelorchilus rubecula) is a species of bird in the Rhinocryptidae family. It is

found in Argentina and Chile, including Magallanes. Its natural habitat is temperate forests.
The diet of the chucao is dominated by invertebrates and fruits. This bird shows a pattern of
aggressiveness and territoriality towards the other species of chucaos in the forest of southern
Chile. The chucao seems vulnerable to the fragmentation of its habita
