1.0 INTRODUCTION
This ditch excavation procedure shall describe methods of carrying out the task activities
required during the installations for Customer Connection Works.
This procedure shall be read in conjunction with other project documents and is subject to
review as the work progress and depending on the situation.
EXCAVATION
1.1 PURPOSE
The primary object for excavation is bury the pipeline for protection from adverse
weather, protection from tampering by known persons and to minimize the outflow
of effluent in the event of a leak.
1.2 SCOPE
Provide a ditch that could accommodate the pipeline during installation. The
scope of this procedure comprises the excavation methods, which will be
employed in the land earth drain to produce the ditch in which the pipeline will
be installed.
To ensure that the process is done in a safe manner taking into consideration
the technical requirement approved.
All work covered by this Method Statement shall be carried out in accordance with
the relevant sections of the following standards and specifications.
1.5 PROCEDURES
1.5.1 SAFETY
Prior to commencing the excavation and trenching activity, a detailed Job Hazard
Analysis will be carried out. After all known, suspected or potential hazards and
risks have been identified, the workforce shall be informed of the hazards and
control measures that must be in place to eliminate or control the hazards and
potential risks surrounding the excavation and trenching activity. The JHA for his
activity is attached here as a part of the specification.
All personnel involved in excavation and trenching operations will have received
Safety induction. Trenching and the job-specific training required for the particular
operations in which they will participate.
All the work force shall wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
reference job specific JHA. All the work force shall comply with GNL Health,
Safety, and Environmental Requirements as per the HSE Plan.
Only authorized personnel shall be allowed in the work area. All necessary
measures as per SNG requirements or specification shall be followed if any
specifically mentioned.
1.5.2 PREPARATION
Before mechanical excavations for the pipeline begin, the Foreman shall confirm
that the ditch line has been staked out by the survey crew and that presence of
any underground facilities has been determined.
No excavation shall proceed until the Site Engineer has obtained all relevant
grants, licenses, authorizations and work permits pertaining to construction of the
ROW and has authorized the Foreman to proceed.
A valid copy of the ‘Fitness Certificate’ for all equipment and lifting slings must be
at the site at all times and a copy of these certificates must be submitted to the
SNG CSR upon request prior to commencement of the works.
Excavation and Ditching is carried out utilizing Back hoe Excavator (Mechanical
Excavation) and digger, shovel etc (non-mechanized excavation). The Foreman
shall supervise the excavation and ditching.
The Foreman shall ensure that excavation depths are completed as show on the
construction drawings and in accordance with the client specifications.
Manual digging will be done with the use of shovels and diggers in the area where
an existing Pipeline is on the ROW.
Any excavated material that is unsuitable for backfilling operations shall not be
reused.
The Foreman shall complete the Daily Ditching and Backfilling Report and forward
this to Site manager.
1.5.4 EQUIPMENT
The following types of equipment will be used in ditch excavation operations in the
ROW along route line:
Backhoe excarvator
•
Hilux and Mini Bus for personnel transport
•
• Digger
• Shovel
1.5.5 PIPELINE TRENCH EXCAVATION
The ditch centre-line will be set out ten-meter center from the survey pillars, which
delineate the edges of the right of way using an optical square and steel tape.
The pipeline trench shall be excavated such that pipeline is laid to a radius greater
than the minimum bending radius specified.
The minimum ditch width will be a function of the excavation and pipe-laying
operations to be deployed at different locations along the right of way.
For excavation with a standard backhoe Excarvator, the ditch width and height
shall be sufficient to allow pipeline installation. The Minimum ditch depth shall be
1.5m and width is based on land area availability along construction corridor
