SPEAKING ASSIGNMENT QUỐC BẢO – MINH TRIẾT

BIRTH ORDER + PARENTING  PERSONALITY & JOB TENDENCY

 FIRST CHILDS:
- Bảo: Triết, how are you getting on with the reading for our presentation on the topic “How birth
order and parenting affect our personalities and jobs?” nextweek ?
- Triết: Well, OK, Bảo – But there is so much of it. I have been immersed myself in reading a number of
reference books so far, and I feel a little bit confused about what I will present.
- Bảo: Oh, I know, I did too. But from what I have read, I realized that how your position in the family
determines certain personality traits is fairly proper and exact, with lots of clear evidence to support it.
- Triết: That is an interesting point – Why don’t we start by outlining our opinions about this topic. More
readings claim that as the inexperienced in the role of parents, the fresh couples are always paying overly
their attention to the firstborn child’s demands. Besides that, they easily get into panic when their first
offsprings are sick or in emergency cases.
- Bảo: Yeah, I totally agree with you. Parents also thoroughly choose foods, drinks that give the best
diet to their first child, and the mature process of the child draws much attention from their parents.
Whenever they fall from bicycle, the parents are always in a hurry, and sometimes not allow the child
ride again. Parents always put strict rules to their first child as well.
- Triết: Yeah, and with some above-mentioned parentings, some research say that firstborn child have high
tendency to be perfectionism because they always want to please their parents, they influence the perception
of their parents about being good, being the best. Thus, I think that they also fear of failure, they are
conservative because it seems they have higher ego.
- Bảo: It is also reported that the oldest child are generally less well-adjusted because they never get
over the arrival of a younger sibling. But on a positive side, some studies claim they were thought to be
good at nurturing – certainly in the past, when people had large families, they were expected to look
after the younger ones.
- Bảo: From what we have discussed, which jobs do you think that the first child can take charge of ?
- Triết: I think they are suitable for the role of leaders or achievers. As educated properly, they are able to
organize effectively their lives and I think they are good at managing everything.
- Bảo: For me, I think they would become doctors because they understand the feeling of being taken
care of, so their dreams are built to help others as they were helped in the past by their parents and
other members of family.
 MIDDLE CHILDS:
- Bao: The middle child can be seen as the other page of the book, they might be less attentive from
their parents. Some studies show that parents adapt their upbringing to the following child. Parents
don’t pay too much attention to the middle as they did for the firstborn. Parents may be calmer and
more gentle when their offspring face emergency cases.
- Triet: Yeah, because they receive less attention at home, the middles tend to get well on terms with their
friends at school. I also think that they often feel left out ”Who I am? I’m not the oldest, I’m not the
youngest, they feel it’s necessary to make friends and open to the social world.

- Bao: For these reasons you’ve given, I would like to take the positive note about their personalities.
They can be adaptable, social and peaceful. Besides, I partly also think that birth order and
personalities are bot as simple when dealing with middle born child because it differs one to another.
And how do you think about any characteristics of the middles when they have younger brothers?
- Triet: I think they are more responsible, they may seek more approval and also be sensitive to their
brothers. I think they may be better to set good example to their younger ones.
- Bao: Which careers that you think the middle child tend to be?
- Triet: They can be a tour guide because of their excellent social skills and their interests in exploring.
-Bao: Yeah, I also think that. They are suitable for jobs related to something outward than inward.
 LAST CHILDS:
- Bảo: All I have read about the last child doesn’t seem to relate to my own experience. I’m the
youngest in my family and don’t recognize myself in any of the studies I have read about. The last
born child are supposed to have been a social and confident child who made friends easily – but I was
actually terribly shy.
- Triết: As my limited knowledge, parents are not strict when it comes to raising the youngest child. From the
experience they had had before, they let the last develop naturally or don’t worries too much about light
injuries such as falling or dropping. That makes them more social and control their life effectively.
- Bảo: Adding to the last child, I think they tend to be irresponsible and highly dependent on parents
because they were pampered when they was a child.
- Triết: From these characteristics, I think the last child is suitable for the position of jobs related to society
because their strength is their out-going personality.
- Bảo: Yeah, there are a lot of choices for them. It depends on their interest and their efforts. For me, I
think they are suitable for the position of sports player because some research said they are good at
sports. It probably won’t surprise to note that youngest children often find careers in the
entertainment business as actors, comedians, writers and son on, because their parents are more
lenient, children expect freedom to follow their own path in a creative style.
SUMMARY

- Bao: How do you feel after our exchange about birth order and personality of child?
- Triet: I find these sound interesting. But after all, I think that these studies involved in birth order and their
traits we base on are just comparatively correct. We can’t use them for all cases.
- Bao: Yes, I agree with you. I also read that there have been other factors affecting the personality of
children. We can list as gender, age gap, mood, body size and talent, for example. I think we should
meet regularly to discuss more about these features.
- Triet: Sure. See you next time!
- Bao: Goodbye, Triet.
