1. investigate different soil types- measuring how much water different soil can hold

AIM: the aim of this investigation is to find out which soil type hold lot of water

Materials:

 sandy soil
 clay soil
 2 litre cut in to two funnels
 4 bottles of mayonnaise

Step 1:

How will you ensure that you are being fair?

I am fair because am using the same size funnels and same bottles of water which have equal
amount of water

Step 2:

clay soil will retains the most amount of water because clay soil has small fine particles, and sandy
soil do not hold lot of water because its dry very fast and it has the largest particle size and feel gritty
to touch

Step 3:
I will pour same amount of water into the funnels
soil will absorb water

A B

The results shows that clay soil hold lot of water than sandy soil

Step 4:
Step 5:

soil A is clay soil, soil B is sandy soil Sandy soil does not hold much water. 3lay soil holds too much
water. 3lay holds water because it has very small grains. The grains fit together tightly
2. investigate different materials in an electric circuit to see If they are conductors or insulators

AIM:

Write down an aim for this investigation: To investigate if materials have conducting or insulating
properties

MATERIALS AND APPARATUS

• D-size battery (. V)

• torch light bulb

• three pieces of electric wire - cm long with the ends (about cm) stripped of the plastic insulating
material

• adhesive tape or Prestik

• various objects made of different materials like:

– nail

– steel wool

– pencil (contact points on the wood)

– rubber

– chalk

– piece of ceramic

– aluminium foil

– metal spoon

– plastic spoon

– drinking straw

STEP 1: what is the idea of this practical investigation

STEP 2: The idea is to investigate different types of materials first to see if they conduct electricity or
not

STEP 3:
METHOD: Use three electrical wires to set up the electric circuit as shown below. Note that the ends
of two of the wires are not touching. What do we call such a circuit?

 open circuit

. Test that the circuit is connected properly by touching A and 2 to each other and making sure that
the bulb lights up

. Take the first one of the objects in the list above. Put the object between the two wire ends at A
and B

STEP 4:

BULB LIGHT UP BULB DOES NOT LIGHT UP

Nail yes
Steel wool yes
Pencil No
Rubber yes
Chalk no
Coin yes
Aluminium foil yes
Metal spoon yes
Plastic spoon No
Drinking straw No

STEP 5:

Metals conduct electricity and non-metals do not conduct

SECTION B

Provide possible safety precautions which could be implemented during each practical investigation

Safety precautions for practical investigation 1

 they must wear water boots and gloves

 use spade to collect soil
 they must use safety glasses, goggles, or a face should must be worn at all times
 avoid small areas where the soil conditions are obviously different, from those in the rest of
the field
 avoid contamination while collection of soil

safety precautions of investigation 2

 maintain a work space

 clear of extraneous materials such as books, papers and clothes
 avoid contacting circuits with wet hands or wet materials
 use only tools and materials with non-conducting handles when working with electrical
devices
 wet cells should be placed on a piece of non-conducting material
 keep access to electrical panels and disconnect switches clear and unobstructed
QUESTION 2

Material

 nine Styrofoam balls of varying sizes

 one pipe cleaner
 wooden sticks
 black marker
 paint and paintbrushes
 floral foam block

1.Instruction

choosing a size and colouring your planets will be the first steps in creating the solar system. the sun
should be the biggest ball and you will have to colour it yellow

we`ve listed the planets from biggest to smallest along with their suggested colours

 JUPITER: YELLOW
 SATURN: BROWN
 URANUS: LIGHT BLUE
 NEPTUNE: DARK BLUE
 EARTH: BLUE
 VENUS: PURPLE
 MARS: RED
 MERCURY: GRAY

2.once you have painted each ball and it has dried, you can make small touches on them to make
them look like the real planets.

3. next, you will have to arrange the planets in the proper order around the sun.

 mercury
 venus
 earth
 mars
 Jupiter
 Saturn
 Uranus
 Neptune

QUESTIONS

1. Based on their location compared to the sun, which planet do you think is the coldest? which one
is the warmest?

2. how many planets are there in the solar system?

3. what is the moon? which planet has the most moons?

4. which planet takes the longest time to orbit around the sun?

5. which planet takes the shortest time to orbit around the sun?
