HPE Network Management
Brochure | Take control of your network with a VIP approach

In a world driven by online operations, networks are the foundation

for all business services. Nothing works without them. Every line of
business now depends on the network, and downtime is unthinkable.
IT services must be always on, always available.
Given the strategic reliance on networks, business requirements
now drive the operational objectives for network management.
In today’s world, business executives look to network engineering
and operations teams to meet business-driven goals:
• Increase revenue by enhancing network availability and performance
• Reduce expenses by improving resource utilization
• Reduce liability and risk by delivering compliant and secure networks
• Prove accountability by meeting and reporting on service-level agreements
• Manage change effectively and efficiently without disruption

And this is where things get really hard if you’re responsible for
managing the network. To meet the high expectations of the
business, you have to first overcome a huge set of challenges
driven by network growth, complexity, and an influx of new
technologies. Let’s look at these challenges.

Nonstop growth brings a whole new set of challenges

Networks are being hit with unrelenting growth in traffic, devices,
and services. The future will bring more of the same. As Internet
traffic continues to surge, the number of networked devices online
will hit 25 billion by 2015.1

New technologies increase network complexity

To manage a network is to manage a moving target. Today’s networks
are not just large and complex, they are constantly changing.
A few examples:
• The rise of virtualization, cloud computing, and software-defined networking
(SDN) is transforming the way network resources are provisioned, managed,
and consumed.
• Networking technology now includes virtual LANs and router redundancy
protocols, along with tools for the discovery and monitoring of virtual servers
and the applications they are hosting.
• New network services run over different IP protocols, such as IP multicast,
multiprotocol label switching (MPLS), IP telephony, and now unified
communications encompassing voice, video, and collaborative applications.
• The rapid shift to wireless technologies and mobile applications is forcing
organizations to rewrite the rules for content delivery. Just keeping up with
new technologies is a challenge in itself. And at the same time, your network
managers have to work aggressively to maintain availability and performance,
counteract new and emerging security treats, and meet regulatory and
compliance requirements.

Legacy point tools and processes

The combined forces of growth and complexity are exposing the
limitations of legacy management tools and outdated processes.
In the typical enterprise, IT teams are saddled with a mishmash of

different teams. Many organizations still rely on manual processes
to accomplish routine tasks—such as change and configuration,
fault isolation, and root-cause analysis. All of the manual labor and
fragmented processes put a drain on staff productivity.
