8. Course description:
This subject is very practical as it aims to equip students with the knowledges to meet
the requirements of corporate managers, market investors, bankers, credit analysts, and
among others. This course introduces various topics for analyzing the financial
situation of a company. Given that the analysis process is mostly based on the
company's financial statements so the analysis of the financial statements is an
important part of evaluating the quality of the firm's earnings which leads to the firm’s
profitability and the sustainability of the firm’s income, and hence the financial
strength of the company. In addition, financial analysis also emphasizes the firm's
future prospect by forecasting the firm's performance. This analysis process helps
investors determine the intrinsic value of the firm’s share of stocks for important
decisions making in corporate financial management or investments.
The structure of this unit therefore includes four main issues: (1) an overview of
financial statement analysis; (2) Accounting analysis; (3) Financial analysis; and (4)
Prospective analysis. In details, this unit presents the role of financial statement
analysis in different types of business, the importance of accrual accounting for the
analysis. This unit also emphasizes the process and methods of financial analysis
including profitability analysis, analysis of sources and uses of fund, and risk analysis.
Based on those analyses, forecasting of financial statements and equity valuation can
be made.

12. Student workload:
Students are expected to:
 Attend all classes.
 Read and comprehend the chapter/s before class.
 Participate in class discussion.
 Get all assigments done on or before the due date.
13. Student assessment system:

 Class attendance and discussion: Class attendance checks are implemented
randomly in 03 out of 09 sessions. If you have zero miss, your base case is of 8. For
01 additional miss, your mark is deducted by one mark and so on. During the class
time, if you take the lecturer’s question and give correct answer, you are awarded 01
bonus point which is added to your assessment #1. Excess bonus points are
transferable to assessment #2 and #3 only.
 Group collaboration:
 Maximum 5 students per group.

- Reference: Textbook and solutions manuals accompanied to the textbook
- Products: Group essay which should show your works on all recommended
Exercises and Problems using Microsoft Word and Excel. Each group provides
video clips of presentation on these assigned Exercises and Problems, 20-25
minutes in total for each chapter.
- All of your works and videos must be uploaded to your Google Drive.
Note: The link to the Google drive for all submissions later on must be registered
to the lecturer in the second session. The first page of your work must shows the
name and contact information of the group leader, the group members, and each
member's contribution level (maximum 100%). The total mark should be deducted
by 50% if this part is missed.
- Deadline for submission: no later than 1 WEEK after each Chapter
 Midterm exam: In writing, closed book, in 45 – 60 minutes, last session.
 Final exam:
- Online quizzes (25 conceptual and calculation questions)
- The final exam covers all chapters discussed in classes
- Closed-book exam in 60 minutes.
