Dual Cooling (open/closed circuit) System for air cooled turbo generator

Aim: The objective of the present invention is to provide closed and open circuit ventilation system for the turbo
generator and enable the operator to switch over to either of the two.

Background: Turbo generator produces heat during its operation. This heat has to be dissipated to a cooling medium
to keep the temperatures within limits. For small capacity machines, air is used for cooling the generator depending
on the availability of water or ambient conditions in the system. As per prior art, one of the systems is employed.
There is no system where both of the ventilation circuits are used. Present invention details the adaptation of both
systems.

Invention: Turbo generator is provided with either air filter assembly or heat exchanger for facilitating supply of cold
air. In case of air filter, the filter is placed on the roof of the generator or at the side. The heat exchangers are located
either at ground level (well below generator, typically 8m). This arrangement ensures that water ingress into the
generator doesn’t takes place. In the modern designs the cooler is kept at either the side of the generator or on the
roof. Inlet and outlet ducts are provided to feed cold air and to let out hot air respectively. It is complex arrangement
to have heat exchangers and air filter at the same time. Especially, in view of the fouling of ducts of individual
arrangement. The present invention sectorial plates hinged at one end are envisaged which will facilitate the use of
same inlet or outlet air ducts for both filter and cooler. When air cooler is in operation, Sectorial plate 1 blocks the
heat exchanger unit. The air will freely flow from the air filter to the generator inlet port. When the Sectorial plate 2
blocks the air cooler unit entry side and allows the air to go through exhaust duct to the atmosphere. When the air
has to pass through heat exchangers through sectorial plates closes the air filter unit and allows air to pass through
heat exchanger. The sectorial plate 2 closes the exhaust duct from the air filter.
