Nomination procedure

The shortlist is announced a few weeks before the award ceremony, and the winner is determined on
the night by a public telephone and online vote. Prior to 2012, a panel of 30 sports journalists each
submitted a list of 10 contenders. From these contenders a shortlist of ten nominees was
determined. This method was criticized following the selection of an all‐male shortlist in 2011. The
selection process for contenders was changed for the 2012 and subsequent awards by the
introduction of an expert panel. The panel produces a shortlist that reflects UK sporting
achievements on the national and/or international stage, represents the breadth and depth of UK
sports and takes into account 'impact' within and beyond the sport or sporting achievement in
question.

FirstThe award was first instituted in 2020. Sprinter Dutee Chand, para‐badminton player Manasi
Joshi, boxer Mary Kom, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, and badminton player P.V. Sindhu, were the final
nominees who proceeded for public voting. On 8 March 2020, BBC held the award ceremony in
Delhi, marking International Women’s Day, and P.V. Sindhu was named the Indian Sportswoman of
the Year 2020. Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports (India) Kiren Rijju was present as the guest of

News: Former German chancellor Angela Merkel has been
awarded the Unesco Peace Prize 2022 for “her efforts to
welcome refugees”. In the summer of 2015, as refugees were
streaming into Europe, Merkel opened her country’s borders
and famously declared to Germans “Wir schaffen das”, “We
can do this.”

She eventually pulled back on her pro‐immigration stance as

support eroded among the public and within her own
conservative party. All the members of the jury were touched
by her courageous decision in 2015 to welcome more than 1.2
million refugees, notably from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and
Eritrea.
