Contents:
The important component of the laser arrangement is the Laser device 54P. Further components
are: the operating unit (remote control and interface) and the focusing optics. These components
can be arranged at the processing place (manual working place or machine) separately from the laser
device. Laser light cable(s) LLK guide the laser light from the laser device to the focusing optics.
The cable set provides for the electrical connection to the laser device.
The laser device consists of the laser with the optical arrangement and the supply of the laser. The
design of the laser device can be seen in the following picture:

All connections at the laser device are located on the so-called rear plate. One part of these
connections is already pre-assigned for the connection to the operating unit. The following picture
shows the location of the connections.
Notice: How to connect the activation of the optics (9) is described more detailed in chapter 6.
Laser parameters can be set and functions, necessary to control and operate the laser device, can be
selected at the operating panel of the remote control.

The connections which can be used from the user are shortly described below. See chapter 3 - 5 for
more detailed information.
Input / output interface (1)
Via this parallel interface (socket X15) the basic functions (except "Mains on/off and EMERGENCY
OFF") of the laser device can be activated externally (e.g. via SPC) and the acknowledgement signals
(status) of the laser control can be tapped off.
Emergency-off / shutter interface (2)
At socket X35 the EMERGENCY OFF of the laser device can be integrated in a higher-order interlock
unit or a simple EMERGENCY OFF switch can be connected externally.
Further the shutter of the laser can be controlled directly at this socket, without intermediate
electronics.
The components at the working place are connected by the further connections at interface 54P and
a connection to the laser device or a further working place is provided. These connections are listed
briefly below.
Designation Function
X14 Control line for remote control
X16 Pulse foot switch
X17 Parameter foot switch
X18 Control line to the laser device
X19 Control line for a second operating unit
X30 Antidazzle protection
X31 Motor-driven defocusing
X36 Air flow sensor for exhauster
X40 Supply line from the laser device
The parameters relevant for the laser processing can be set at the remote control. They are
indicated on the display in the parameter set menu.
Parameters which have been set once, e.g. for a certain welding, can be saved as parameter set
and called again. Consequently the programming of individual parameters can be dropped. Up to
25 parameter sets can be saved.
If you activate the laser arrangement via the Input/Output interface you may select and start these
25 parameter sets of the remote control at the Input/Output interface.
The following picture shows the parameter set menu of the remote control with typical values. The
second line (focal point) is extracted if you have no focusing optics with stereo microscope and thus
no motor-driven defocusing.
Additional optical components as e.g. beam switches or shutters can be controlled via the
"activation of the optics". See chapter 6 for detailed information.
Supply: internally S1 = 2: *1
internal voltage, 24V provided
at X15.
externally S1 = 1: *1
external voltage necessary,
(24V +/-10%)
Put switch S1 (near X15) in position 1 on the circuit board in the interface,
otherwise the power supply of the interface is used for the interface (not potential
free, see "Description of the output signals").
Attention:
Switch off the main switch before turning down the rear wall in the interface and
shifting the slide switch.
LOCK BDE Lock the operating unit (lock remote control)
(high active) With this input the control functions regarding switching on/off the laser and
releasing parameter sets (laser pulses) are switched over 0from the remote control
to the input/output interface. Switching on and off the laser device is still possible.
If the laser is switched over to the interface the number of the parameter set,
selected via the interface, is indicated on the display of the remote control. As
identification that the activation takes place via the interface, a ∗ is inserted after
the number of the parameter set in the parameter set menu (see sketch).

The LEDs of the control keys "LASER" and "START/STOP" light corresponding to
the status of the input signals "LASER ON" and "START PAR-SET".
When pressing the MENU key you return only into the sub-menu "Message stack"
and one part of the "Diagnosis menus"
With this input you can lock the operating unit of the laser arrangement against
unauthorized operating and changing of the parameters.
Attention:
• You cannot control the laser via the interface if this input is not
activated!
• If you reset the input LOCK BDE during the operation of a parameter
set, pulsing is interrupted and the laser is switched off.
(high active) With this input the lamp power supply of the laser device is switched on and the
lamp is ignited. The process is completed approx. 6..12sec. after the activation of
the input and the output "LASER IS ON" will be activated.
The lamp power supply remains switched on as long as the input is active.
After the laser gave the acknowledgement "LASER IS ON" and "LASER READY"
laser pulses can be released by activating the input "START PAR-SET".
Notice:
If the laser does not send the acknowledgement "LASER IS ON" and no fault is
indicated it might be possible that you did not activate the input LOCK BDE!
PAR-SET NO 1 The parameter set to be started, which has been programmed at the remote
PAR-SET NO 2 control, must be selected via these inputs.
PAR-SET NO 4
PAR-SET NO 8 The number of the parameter set is coded as a 5-digit binary number.
PAR-SET NO 16 Up to 25 parameter sets can be selected.
(high active) If the number of the parameter set is not within the range of 1..25 a monitoring
message is indicated on the remote control when starting the parameter set and
the output "MONITORING" will be activated.
As soon as the input LOCK BDE is activated the 5 inputs "PAR-SET No 1..16" are
read in cyclically (approx. every 10 ms) and the selected number is indicated in the
parameter set menu of the remote control. The settings of the parameter set are
taken over.
If the function "Shielding gas" has been switched on when selecting the parameter
set you have to wait until the shielding gas has reached the point to be processed
before starting the parameter set. The time required must be determined and taken
into consideration before starting the parameter set.
Notice:
If the setting of the motor-driven focus control will be changed when selecting the
parameter set, the output "LASER READY" is reset for approx. 500 ms until the
new setting is taken over.
The number of the parameter set must not be active any longer during the
operating of a parameter set. The parameter set is operated completely and then
the inputs are read in again.
The number of the parameter set must be changed at the earliest after the output
"PAR-SEAT ACTIVE" has been activated.
You may change, save and copy the parameters of the parameter sets.
You should use this function when you optimize the parameters.
As identification that you may set the number of the parameter set to be started by
means of the remote control, a # is indicated after the number of the parameter
set (see sketch).

(high active) With this input parameter sets (laser pulses) can be started and stopped. A
parameter set is started when the input becomes active and is stopped when the
input becomes deactive or the parameter set is completed (all laser pulses have
been released)
The input starts a parameter set once. To start the parameter set again the input
must be reset first. If the function "antidazzle" is active, starting can be carried out
with a maximum frequency of 10 Hz. The frequency is about 50 Hz if the antidazzle
is switched off
Notice:
The function of the input depends on the pulse number programmed in the
parameter set:
Pulse number = 1: release single pulse
Pulse number = 2..9999: release pulse train
Pulse number = ∞: continuous pulse
Start of a parameter set is accepted only if the input is active for at least 1 ms and
the laser is ready at the starting moment (output "LASER READY" must be active).
If the laser is not ready a monitoring message is generated and the parameter set
will not be started.
After starting a parameter set the number of the parameter set is read in, the output
"PAR-SET ACTIVE" is set, the output "LASER READY" is reset and the first laser
pulse of the parameter set is released. "PAR-SET ACTIVE" will be reset after the
operation of the parameter set (last laser pulse completed) and the output "PAR-SET
COMPLETED" will be activated for 2 seconds(see interface diagram 2).
The output "LASER READY" is reactivated only if the capacitor bank of the laser
device is charged again after release of the last pulse.
This may last up to 1,2 seconds, depending on power and duration of the pulse.
The "dynamic" parameter sets can be started with a positive edge of the signal
"START PAR-SET". The pulse must have a minimum time of 1 ms.
The device shows the same behaviour at the interface as described above, with the
difference that the parameter set will not be interrupted if the input "PAR-SET
ACTIVE" is reset during the operation of a parameter set (see interface diagram 3).
(high active) This input serves to reset messages of the laser arrangement and to restart
after a fault (see output "MONITORING" and "FAULT").
The input is accepted only if it is active for at least 20 ms. If the input is
accepted the message outputs "MONITORING" and "FAULT" are reset.
"High active" means that the output has a 24V level if the condition is active.
Attention:
Switch off the main switch at the laser device before turning down the rear wall in the
interface and shifting the slide switch.
LASER IS ON The laser (lamp power supply) is switched on.
(high active) The output is the acknowledgement of the input "LASER ON" and characterizes the
ready condition of the laser. After the laser sent the acknowledgement "LASER IS
ON" all basic functions of the laser device are switched on.
You may release laser pulses with the input "START PAR-SET" if the output "LASER
READY" is active too. After the first switch-on of the laser both outputs are active.
The output remains active as long as the laser is switched on. In case of a fault
within the laser device the output is reset.
(high active) The output is a dynamic signal which characterizes that the laser device is ready for
pulsing. Parameter sets can be started only if the output is active.
If you start a parameter set and the laser is not ready a monitoring message is
generated and the parameter set will not be started.
PAR-SET ACTIVE The parameter set is active, laser pulse are released.
(high active) This output is the acknowledgement of the input "START PAR-SET".
The output "PAR-SET ACTIVE" becomes active as soon as the start of a parameter
set has been accepted. It remains active until a parameter set has been operated
and will be reset immediately after the last laser pulse of the parameter set.
If a parameter set with a pulse number of 2..9999 is interrupted the output "PAR-SET
ACTIVE" is reset, but the output "COMPLETE PAR-SET" will not be activated. The
output "MONITORING" will be activated too (see interface diagram 4). It is up to you
to evaluate this condition.
Notice:
If the pulse number = 1 is programmed within a parameter set the signal has only a
duration of the programmed laser pulse (approx. 20 ms if the antidazzle protection is
switched off, approx. 100 ms if the antidazzle protection is switched on).
In this case you should use the output COMPLETE PAR-SET as acknowledgement
for the input "START PAR-SET" which will be activated for 2 seconds after the last
pulse is completed and can surely be recognized even by a slow control.
If a new parameter set is started within 2 seconds the output is reset before the
output "PAR-SET ACTIVE" will be activated.
Background:
If the pulse number = 1 is programmed within a parameter set the signal "PAR-SET
ACTIVE" can only have the duration of the programmed laser pulse (max. 20 ms).
Many external control cannot recognize this signal as it is too short.
For this reason there is an output signal "PAR-SET COMPLETED" which can be
used from slow controls as acknowledgement for the input "START PAR-SET".
SHUTTER IS The central shutter is open.
OPEN
The output is active if the shutter is open. It is inactive as soon as the shutter
(high active) is not in opened position any longer.
The shutter is controlled by the shutter circuit (Interface X35 or X33) (see
section 4.1).
Notice:
• This output is available only if the laser device is equipped with a central
shutter.
• The shutter circuit is also looped through over the pulse foot switch. If
you do not use the foot switch you have to bridge pin 1 and pin 3 at X16
or to plug the short-circuit termination to X16.
(high active) The output becomes active if an unintended condition at the interface or a
condition in the laser arrangement has been detected, which may lead or
already led to a switch-off of the laser arrangement.
If the output is not active, everything is OK within the laser control.
The monitoring can be reset with the input "RESET" or with the RESET key
at the remote control.
(high active) The control permanently checks the correct function of the laser
arrangement. If a malfunction is detected, a fault monitoring message is
generated by the control and activates this output. The output
"MONITORING" is activated too.
Electrical or optical components of the laser device or the operating unit may
be the cause for the fault.
The cause of the fault is indicated on the display of the remote control.
If you cannot eliminate the fault or if this is a general message, you have to
write down the message codes in the message stack of the remote control
and to contact the HAAS-LASER "Service department".
You can try to reset the fault with the input "RESET" or with the RESET key
at the remote control.
The following diagrams of the input/output interfaces show typical interface diagrams.
General note:
• The grey bar shows the high active condition (input/output = 24V) for the inputs.
• In case of a shutter-circuit the grey bar indicates the closed condition.
• The last line of the diagrams shows the power (pulse power) delivered by the laser. The signal
shows the time course of the pulse.
Switching on the laser, opening the shutter and switching off the laser, all via the interface .
Notice:
Notice:
Notice:
Starting a parameter set (see interface diagram 3), premature interruption of the parameter
set.
Notice:
The EMERGENCY-OFF/Shutter interface consists of the shutter circuit of the central shutter and
the EMERGENCY OFF interface of the laser arrangement. Both circuits are available on X35.
The function of the shutter circuit is to prevent an emerging of laser radiation, by closing the
beam path with the shutter when the circuit is interrupted.
Notice:
• The shutter circuit can only be used if there is a central shutter in the laser device. If this is
not the case, the circuit must be bridged (bridge between pin 1 and pin 8 from X35).
• If you want to control the shutter only by the shutter circuit at X35, you have to bridge the
circuit at X16 and X33 (see sketch on the next side).
• If the maximum line length of the shutter circuit is exceeded the resistance of the circuit is too high,
so that the moving magnet cannot attract safely.
On the next side you will find the principle of the shutter circuit and the location of the shutter in the
path of the beam.
The shutter is located on the mounting plate in Position of the central shutter:
the upper part of the laser device, at the exit of
the laser. The shutter consists of a mirror
which is mounted on the axis of a moving
magnet and can be moved into the path of the
beam.

2: Central shutter
3: Absorber
At this interface you may connect an external EMERGENCY-OFF key to the laser device or
integrate the EMERGENCY-OFF key of the remote control into an external EMERGENCY-OFF
circuit.
Following you will find three proposals how to wire the EMERGENCY-OFF circuit.
Standard wiring:
1: EMERGENCY-OFF key of
the remote control
2: Main contactor of the laser
device
Description:
If the circuit for the main
contactor (2) is interrupted, the
main contactor releases and
the power supply for the laser
device is interrupted. The
INTERFACE and the remote
control, however, remain alive.

switchgear
(I max. = 0,4A)
Attention:
You have to switch two lamps
parallel so that the failure of
one lamp is recognized(I total
< 0,4A).
The interface is located on the rear side of the laser device (see section "1.1 Laser device").
The moving magnet and the position signals of each beam guiding device (shutter / beam switch)
are connected to the "activation of the optics". You have to control the component and to check the
position with these signals.
Splitters:
Splitters are fixed components (without movable parts) which divides the laser beam in a fixed ratio.
One part of the laser radiation is deflected by 90°, the other part passes the component straight on.
The splitting ratio is given and cannot be changed.
A splitting ratio of 50/50% or 33,3/66,6% is possible. It serves to divide the laser beam into two or
three laser light cables, to be able to weld at two or three points simultaneously. Splitters are used
e.g. for a non wrapping welding of parts.
Beam switches:
With a beam switch you can switch over the complete laser beam (100 %) via an electric signal.
The beam switch consists of a moving magnet with a mirror mounted on its axis. If the mirror is in
the beam path the laser beam is deflected by 90°. But if the mirror is moved out of the beam path,
the laser passes the beam switch straight on. The positions of the mirror are detected with proximity
switches.
The position of 2 beam switches maximum can be controlled at the "activation of the optics". The
coil connections of the moving magnets and the position signals for "TRANSMISSION" and
"DEFLECTION" of 2 beam switches maximum are available on the connector.
Shutters:
You may close the beam path with a shutter. The shutter consists of a moving magnet with a mirror
mounted on its axis, such as the beam switch. In dead condition the laser beam is guided into an
absorber.
If the arrangement of your optical system is provided with a central shutter that is located at the exit
of the laser, this shutter is controlled via the "EMERGENCY-OFF/Shutter interface" (shutter circuit
X35) of the interface.
If the arrangement of your optical system has no central shutter but a shutter in front of each laser
light cable to protect the respective beam exit, there is no control via X35.
In this case the shutters (maximum 3) such as the beam switches are controlled via the "activation
of the optics". The coil connections of the moving magnets and the position signals for "OPENED"
and "CLOSED" of 3 shutters maximum are available on the connector.
The individual components are mounted on the mounting base and covered with transparent
plexiglass. This enables you to easily identify the type of the individual components (beam switch,
splitter, shutter).
The "functional test shutter/ beam switch" is a logical circuit which checks the position signals and
the activation of the moving magnet with regard to conformity. If there is no conformity the laser
device is switched off. The signals are tapped off potential free (opto-coupler) and do not have any
effect on the signals at your interface of shutter/beam switch. .
Notice:
For each component provided in the optical arrangement, which is controlled via this interface, the
proximity switches must be alive as otherwise the "functional test shutter/beam switch" will react
and the laser device generates the fault message (E0011801) and switches off.
There is a triangular board (18-09-07-00) in the upper part of the optical component (shutter/beam
switch) to which the proximity switches and the moving magnet are connected. The circuit of the
"functional test shutter/beam switch" is also on this board.
A cable leads from each component - connector X7 on the board- to the D-Sub-socket X5 at the
rear plate of the laser device.
The two components shutter and beam switch have a similar mechanical design.
Therefore there is no difference in the time behaviour when opening and closing or switching over
the beam path.
To control the shutters and beam switches via the "activation of the optics" is a simple and
favourable solution for you.
But:
Please observe that the time behaviour changes for the control of these components (the
component switches approx. 40 ms slower in case of a warm moving magnet) and that the signals
of the position switches bounce when reaching the final position.
For these reasons we guarantee a switching time of the components of 200 ms even if some
components will actually switch faster under favourable conditions.
We recommend to check
the position switches after
200 ms after switching on or
off the moving magnet
circuit.
Proximity switch:
approx. 50 mA + output current of the
outputs
*1: The moving magnet requires a voltage of at least 21 V to be able to move. This
minimum voltage must be applied to socket X5 of the laser device (between +MOVING
MAGNET and -MOVING MAGNET).
The line length possible depends on the used cable cross section and on the tolerance of
your power supply.
The following list shows the voltage for different line lengths and cross sections. You have
the possibility to check whether the minimum voltage of 21 V is kept for the activation.
Please note that the maximum permissible line length will be reduced if you have
designated only one core for the supply of all moving magnets (e.g. 1 times GND for "-
MOVING MAGNET").
