WHAT ABOUT DEFENSE?

by Jürgen Bartels

Many may ask why a former hotel executive would venture to opine
on a topic so intricate and complicated as world security. Nonetheless,
Jürgen Bartels has been present – via the Starwood Hotel Group – in
more than 85 countries, providing him with insight as to how world
economies developed, and how budget policies have contributed to
the growth or decline of certain nations. For 50 years now, Bartels has
kept a particularly close eye on China, studying its almost case-study
rise to power since writing his High School thesis on the country.

Now, after many of his theories have come to fruition, Bartels makes
an argument for building one European military force it can afford that
can provide a safety net of unity for an important “community,” that
according to Bartels, focuses wrongly on inefficient social measures.

One of our commitments at BG Group is to
seek to ensure that our activities yield enduring
benefits for our host nations. We are very
focused on finding ways to align our long-
term objectives with those of the governments
and communities in the countries where we
operate. There are many examples of how we
put these principles into practice, particularly
around sharing our skills to support the
development of local businesses and industries,
our investment in local infrastructure and our
involvement in education and training.

It’s also important to remember that all forms

of society depend on cost-effective and reliable
sources of energy to function. So our core
business purpose – connecting markets to
resources – in itself has an important role to
play in helping emerging nations stabilize and
grow their economies. We like to think and
behave in terms of BG Group bringing our
skills, finances and ability to access markets to
a host nation, rather than BG Group carrying
away a country’s natural resources.This is a state
of mind that finds expression in many of the
things we do – and how we do them – in the
countries where we operate.

I’d also underline our passion for safety. We have

a relentless focus on ensuring that everyone who
works for us – employees and contractors alike
– goes home safely to their families at the end
of their shift or working day. This is the absolute
priority for everyone at BG Group,me included.
Our belief that every accident is preventable
shapes every aspect of our operations, from our
drilling rigs to our corporate offices around the
world. We work very hard to encourage our
many stakeholders to join us on our journey
to a goal of zero injuries at all of our work sites.
In fact, I’d suggest that our efforts to embed
a genuine safety culture wherever we work
amounts to one of the most important long-
term contributions we try to make to our host
communities and countries.

While storefronts stood empty, the 47-storey Waldorf-Astoria

the Waldorf even had it’s own in-house professional hostess in Elsa
Maxwell. She delighted high society with her child-like bashes:
costume and painting parties, cooking soirees, and parlor games. In
fact, it was during this decade that this “hostest with the mostest”
invented the “scavenger hunt” to keep her guests entertained.

The Ritz was another favored venue for extravagant celebrations. It

during the Great Depression. Socialite and “poor little rich girl”
Barbara Hutton, grand-daughter of the dime-store magnate Frank
W. Woolworth, made her debut there in 1933. Costing more than
$60,000 ($1million today) it was one of the most glamorous parties
of the 1930s. Eucalyptus and silver birch trees were imported from
California, four orchestras played accompanied by singer, Rudy
Vallee. It was attended by a veritable Who’s Who list of the rich
and famous, including the Astors and the Rockefellers.

It was on the West Coast that even greater excesses were witnessed, at
a time when most Americans could not afford to feed their family.

Newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst was fast losing

revenue from advertisers taking flight. Yet he refused to believe
it would last: the worse the Depression got, the more frantic
Heart’s spending became. Throughout the early 1930’s Hearst
held elaborate parties and commissioned new bedrooms at his
home to accommodate all the guests. According to the Hollywood
gossip and historian Kenneth Anger, the parties were “the most
extravagant the movie colony had ever seen.” On New Year’s Eve
1932, he held a Kids’ Masquerade that was so extravagant that

parties, dresses cut very low at the back, and also long fur coats, became popular. The
length of skirts depended on the time of day; so it was long at night and half-length

To complete the three-piece set for men, the waistcoat was replaced with a pullover,

In the field of music Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Glen

NEUTRA,
COMPLETE WORKS
Editorial: Taschen

Originally from Vienna, Richard

Neutra came to America early in
his career, settling in California. His
influence on post-war architecture
is undisputed, the sunny climate and
rich landscape being particularly
suited to his cool, sleek modern style.
Neutra had a keen appreciation for the
relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls and ceilings which turn into
deep overhangs have the effect of connecting the indoors with the outdoors. His ability to incorporate
technology, aesthetic, science, and nature into his designs brought him to the forefront of Modernist
architecture. In this volume, all of Neutra’s works are gathered together, illustrated by over 1000
photographs, including those of Julius Shulman and other prominent photographers.

LEROY GRANNIS, SURF PHOTOGRAPHY
OF THE 1960S AND 1970S
Author: Steve Barilotti
Editorial: Taschen

First published in a limited edition, which sold out instantly on publication, this new edition showcases
Grannis’s most vibrant work—from the bliss of catching the perfect wave at San Onofre to dramatic
wipeouts at Oahu’s famed North Shore. An innovator in the field, Grannis suction-cupped a waterproof
box to his board, enabling him to change film in the water and stay closer to the action than other
photographers of the time. He also covered the emerging surf lifestyle, from “surfer stomps” and hoards
of fans at surf contests to board-laden woody station wagons along the Pacific Coast Highway. It is in
these iconic images that a sport still in its adolescence embodied the free-spirited nature of an era—a
time before shortboards and celebrity endorsements, when surfing was at its bronzed best.
