Digital Twinning
Digital Twinning
Several surveys have highlighted the current research trends of digital twinning in various fields, and the
technology is increasingly in demand due to its ability to find product flaws, reduce production cost,
monitor resources in real-time, and predict product failure. As a result, digital twinning has become one
of the top-ten technology trends. However, there are also limitations associated with digital twinning,
including challenges with data collection, big data management, data analysis, standardization, security,
and privacy. Despite these challenges, there is a great scope for digital twinning technology in various
fields, including emerging sensor technologies and IoT deployments, real-time monitoring of physical
devices, indoor and outdoor asset tracking, smart manufacturing, prognostics and health management
(PHM), power and energy, automotive and transport, healthcare, communication and networks, smart
cities, and others. By addressing the challenges associated with digital twinning, the technology has the
potential to significantly improve efficiency, productivity, and safety in various domains..
Artificial intelligence in digital twins is a universally applicable theoretical and technical system, with
many applications, such as product design, equipment manufacturing, medical analysis, aerospace and
other fields. The major limitations include inaccurate data collection, testing costs issues, flexibility
issues, some technical challenges etc. In the coming years, digital twins development trend will keep
increasing in the fields of Aerospace, Manufacturing and Automobile industry.
DT-driven ML for AI applications aim towards making a step from conventional automation to smart
manufacturing and adaptable production systems. ML learning approaches, such as supervised
Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), face two main challenges: 1) the availability of proper quality and
quantity datasets and 2) labelling the dataset for training an ML model.
The integration of digital twins and AI has significant effects in aerospace flight detection simulation,
failure warning, aircraft assembly, and even unmanned flight. Its application in Smarty city ensures that
the traffic situation is clear and efficient, and urban traffic management can be carried out quickly and
accurately.
IoT and wireless sensor networks (WSN) are critical components of digital twinning, as they provide the
necessary data to create virtual replicas of physical systems. By using sensors to collect data on various
physical parameters, industries can create accurate digital twins that can be used for simulation,
optimization, and predictive maintenance. One major challenge associated with digital twinning is data
inaccuracy. The emergence of 5G and 6G networks also presents opportunities for digital twinning, as
these networks offer higher data transfer rates, lower latency, and increased network capacity.
