Welcome to the second semester of the academic year 2021-2022!


It is true courage and dedication that you continuously strive to learn, despite the
devastating disruption of the pandemic to our lives. Students like you are the reason why Bicol
University College of Agriculture and Forestry commits to deliver academic excellence and
build character. Although the modality of instruction was adjusted to fit the situation faced by
everyone, the university will assure to deliver clientele satisfaction and quality instruction.
Throughout this semester it is expected that we will face challenges as we cope with the "new
normal". As an aid of support, this course guide was crafted to reach every student.
This course guide will serve as a map in the course subject. This consists of the
information, requirements, and activities to be undertaken. Therefore, it is deemed to be read
before starting with the lesson. Good luck and welcome to CPdn2 class! Explore, learn and
enjoy the ride with me.
Course Introduction
The course deals with the basic applied science principles and practices of horticulture with the
integration of entrepreneurial concepts and techniques. Horticulture is the art and science of growing
and producing fruits, vegetables, plantation crops, landscape gardening, flowering plants etc. This
course requires a total of five (5) hours in instruction per week: two (2) hours for lecture and three (3)
hours for laboratory. The study and application of the various practices in growing, processing,
marketing, and cost analysis of horticultural crops with emphasis on those that are grown within the
service area.

Course Learning Objectives:


Upon completion of the course, you are expected to have gained understanding
and are able to apply all the competencies and skills learned from the following:
1. discuss the importance of horticultural crops,
2. classify and differentiate between and among the branches of horticulture,
3. develop and maintain curriculum laboratory and instructional projects for horticultural
crops,
4. prepare planting materials, propagate (sexual and asexual techniques) horticultural
crops,
5. discuss cropping systems appropriate in combination with horticultural crops
established in the hilly lands,
6. determine plant and soil nutrient management for horticultural crops,
7. determine water requirements for various horticultural crops,
8. apply appropriate and integrated crop protection principles for horticultural crops,
9. perform different methods of pruning while explaining their importance among
horticultural crops,
10. explain and determine maturity indices before harvesting horticultural crops,
11. discuss and demonstrate post-harvest practices,

12. grow and maintain foliage and garden plants for landscape, and
13. construct and create seasonal and decorative floral designs
Target Learners and Prerequisite
The target learners for this course are the third year Bachelor in Technical
Vocational Teachers Education. This subject does not require you of any prerequisite.
Mode of Delivery
For this semester, the university identified three (3) types of learners, namely:
A. Students with good internet access (able to participate in synchronous activity);
B. Students with poor to fair internet access (able to participate in asynchronous
activities only); and
C. Students with no internet connection.

Course Structure & Schedule


Horticultural Crop Production Management has 12 chapters focusing on the
operational management in the production of horticultural crops which shall be
completed within 18 weeks for second semester.
Each lesson has its own handouts with corresponding lecture (printed/video
recorded) and learning activities. You are expected to finish all twelve (12) learning
lessons within the 18-week period.
The table below shows your weekly activity for the whole semester. Refer to it

Course Requirements / Assessment Activities


The assessment that will be used is categorized into two: formative and
summative assessment.

Self-Assessment activities will be provided in every learning material.


Feedbacks/results of this assessment are intended to assist and identify your strength
and weaknesses among the topics/areas discussed. This will not be recorded or
graded.

Summative assessment will all be graded; it will be in three (3) forms:

 Activities. This will be given at the end of the lesson, which will be graded on a
weekly basis. It will serve as an immediate feedback mechanism for to monitor
learning. Inform the instructor with the issues and concerns on the meeting or
consultation schedule.
 Major Outputs. There will be two major outputs (one for midterm, and another for
final term). The details of each major output will be discussed on the first day of each
term and can be accessed on the course site.
 Major Exams. There will be two major examination (Midterm and Final
Examination). The major exams will be conducted through online on the scheduled
week of assessment (See Course Schedule). Details will be given during classes
and will be available in the course site.
To ensure objectivity, rubrics will be used for the evaluation of your outputs whenever
applicable and can be accessed on the course site. Content and scope of the
assessment material will be discussed before and during the 1 st day of classes.

Attendance Policy
Attendance is strongly encouraged and students are responsible for all materials
covered in the lecture. In case a student was not able to attend the class due to
unavoidable and uncontrolled circumstances like power interruption, poor internet
connectivity and the like, notify the instructor for proper disposition.

Learning Resources
To facilitate everything, learning resources/materials will be made available in
your course site ahead of the discussion. You may access these anytime of the entire
duration of the course. However, for those students under Type B and C, you are
advised to inform me ahead of time so that necessary solution may be served at once to
avoid problems at the end of the semester. The learning material are but not limited to
the following:
1. Powerpoint Presentations. To be use during the lecture period and will be available
in the eLearning site.
2. Handouts. Guide and brief discussion off the lesson. To be uploaded in the
eLearning site-google classroom.
3. Video/Audio lectures and Video Links. Accessible in the eLearning site.
4. Additional Reading Materials. Other reading materials will be uploaded for further
reading and study. Everybody is encouraged to read and comprehend the different
concepts/ lessons related to the lesson/topic. This will guide/help in performing the
activities and even in answering self-assessment test given at the end of every
lesson.

2. Provide current and active contact details by answering the e-form sent in the
eLearning platform.
3. Chat group is primarily for the queries, questions, information dissemination,
clarification, and other important and related matters that both parties are concerned
about. Only issues and concerns related to the course will be entertained.
4. Use of emoticons is encouraged but do not overdo it.
5. Consultation via text messaging should be formal. The student should message first
the instructor stating the name and section. If the call is permitted by the instructor,
student should introduce his/her self and directly ask the question or clarification.
Personal questions shall not be entertained.
