Philosophical perspective of the self

The philosophical standpoint of "self" has been described and analyzed by an

endless number of philosophers, researchers, and even scholars throughout history. These

individuals are critical in describing how knowledge of this notion influences the world and

how people perceive themselves and their final interactions with others.

An understanding of “self,” therefore, affirms a person’s identity in a social

environment, allowing him/her to recognize others besides oneself (Sorabji 13). In other

words, how humans socialize is totally determined by how they view themselves and others

in daily social encounters.

Philosophical perspective of the self among those discussed that made me a strong

impression on the concept of myself are the concept of St. Augustine. I believed that God

placed us in this world to find our purpose by providing us with bodies and souls that are

equipped with various aspects to help us find our purpose. Human beings receive guidance

on how to conduct themselves in the world from God. God does not dictate evil on man;

however, man is the author of his own evil deeds. He directs them to take the right and

beneficial route that leads to their independence. Human freedom should not influence on

the rights of others. God provides instructions on how to conduct oneself without violating

the rights of others. Only God can give the life that is best for us. God will give me the best

that will help me find the real happiness in my own self.
