Position: Digital Mobilisation Officer

Location: South Africa / Remote - preferably Johannesburg but flexible as GPAF implements a hybrid work
location model with work-from-home being the main base of our work location.

Purpose of the role:


The Digital Mobilisation Officer is the product owner and is tasked with overseeing Africa’s digital open campaign
platform VUMA.EARTH where people from across Africa are empowered to start online petitions on the
environmental topics they care about and secure backing for their activism. Proactively identify key issues,
individuals and opportunities that VUMA.EARTH can be used for. Which means scouting for opportunities that
supporters might care about. Grow the platform beyond its current 100 000+ users and deliver effective campaigns
initiated and advanced by supporters. The Digital Mobilisation Officer works in tandem with members of our
community management team in the Digital Team to back those who start campaigns on Vuma, training them to be
impactful within their own communities. They will also partner with stakeholders, supporting the partnership and
advocacy among young people in Africa, in using Vuma as one of the tools of activism and campaigning.

Main responsibilities
1. Build and entitle communities of online activists through Vuma.Earth
● Increase VUMA.EARTH user base and retention
● Management of communities on the platform
● Organising training
● Encouraging collaboration with campaigners, community managers in the digital team
● Guiding promotions and advertising of the VUMA.EARTH platform
● Coordinate community managers and volunteers to utilise and promote the platform
2. Lead the engagement strategy and its implementation of Vuma.Earth
● Strategy on the growth of VUMA.EARTH
● Strategic amalgamation of Vuma work with GPAF’s broader movement, support and digital strategies
3. Monitor and determine external opportunities and partner with petition starters to create featured,
impactful campaigns
● Examining external opportunities that Vuma.Earth can leverage on through engagement with internal GPAF
teams. volunteers and external parties.
● News media and social listening to identify opportunities for campaigning
● Initiating a number of of co-created campaigns that have high visibility and influence in the external world
● Coaching for petition starters and expeditious delivering of campaigns
4. Working with teams to manage the health of the platform
● Partnership with ControlShift (product owner)
● Coordinating necessary dev updates with the in-house or external developer
5. Monitoring, Learning and Reporting
● Integration of data and producing reports
● Prompt production of reports
● Communication, learning and knowledge sharing of insights with a wider Programme team at GPAF

Qualifications and experience:


● A relevant degree in either journalism, marketing, IT, product management or communications.
● Previous experience in managing digital campaigning, or a background in social media engagement, ideally
in an NGO or a non-profit organisation

● Strategic thinking around digital campaigning
● The capability to learn new digital properties fast
● Network and community building
● Strong writing and communication skills in English or French/Ability to speak or write in English or French as
a secondary language is an advantage
● Strong analytical and data skills
● The ability to identify and leverage campaigning opportunities for the Vuma.Earth platform

Remote working requirements:


Working-from-Home is the main base of the work location for all staff employed by Greenpeace Africa or hosted by
Greenpeace Africa. This applies to home location within the country/ countries where the contract is stipulated
(Employee must have a reliable high-speed internet connection and dedicated work space at home equipped to
focus their attention to their duties)
