quantities,
2. illustrate situations that involve direct variations,
3. write an equation describing direct variation, and
4. solve for a missing value given a proportional relationship and solve real-life
problems involving direct variation.

MATHEMATICS 9 – Learner’s Material
Materials: TV, Laptop, Card board, Manila paper, Pentel pen and Chalk
IV. PROCEDURES (COT – Obj. 7)
A. Routinary Matters

2. Sitting Arrangements
3. Classroom Cleanliness and orderliness
4. Checking of attendance
B. Simple Recall
- Quadratic Equation
C. Lesson Development

1. ACTIVITY (COT – Obj. 1)

Group Activity:
1. Each group will be given a problem with questions.
2. Answers should be written in manila paper for 10 minutes.
3. Each group will assign a member to report the group’s output.

2. ANALYSIS (COT – Obj. 3)

- What happen to the other quantity if one quantity increases?
- What is the ratio of the two given quantities?

3. ABSTRACT (COT – Obj. 3)

DIRECT VARIATION
- is a proportionality relationship in which two quantities follow a direct
relationship. This implies that an increase (or decrease) in one quantity leads to a
corresponding increase (or decrease) in another quantity.
- The ratio of two quantities in a direct variation is a constant.
Situation that shows Direct Variation
1. The distance an airplane flies to the time travelling
2. The time a teacher spends checking papers to the numbers of students
3. The amount of money spent to the number of COVID-19 Vaccine
purchased

The statements:
“ y varies directly as x”
“ y is directly proportional to x” and
“ y is proportional to x”
- Mathematically translated as, y = kx , where k is the constant of variation.
- For two quantities, x and y, an increase in x causes an increase in y as well.
Similarly, a decrease in x causes a decrease in y.
- To find the value of constant, divide both sides by x, the result is k=
y/x.
Write the formula of the given statement and the constant of variation
(k).
1. p varies directly to r.
p = kr k = p/r
2. The distance(D) travelled by a car varies directly as its speed(s).
D = ks k = D/s
3. The fare(F) of a passenger is directly proportional to the
distance(d) of his destination.
F = kd k = F/d
Solve each indicated value.
1. If y varies directly as x, and y=9 when x=3, find y when x=6.
Solution:
x 3 6
y 9 ?
y = kx → k = y/x
k = 9/3
k=3
y = kx
y = 3(6)
y = 18
2. If a varies directly as b, and a=6 when b=12, find a when b=4
Solution:
B 12 4
A 6
a = kb → k = a/b
k = 6/12
k=½
a = ½ (4)
a=2

Solve the following problems.

1. The service fee(f) of a physical therapist varies directly as the
number of hours(n) of service rendered. A physical therapist charges
Php 2,100 for 3 hours service to patients in a home care. How much
would he be paid for 6 ½ hours of service?
Service fee (f) 2,100 ?
No. of hours (n) 3 6½
Solution: f = kn → k = f/n
k = 2,100/3
k = 700
f = kn
f = 700(6 ½ )
f = 4,550
Therefore, the therapist will be paid 4,550 pesos for 6 ½ hours of
service.
2. Jessie uses 20 liters of gasoline to travel 200 kilometers, how many
liters of gasoline will he use on a trip of 700 kilometers?

Liters of gas (g) 20 ?

Distance travel (d) 200 700
Solution: d = kg → k = d/g
k = 200/20
k = 10
g = d/k
g = 700/10
g = 70
Therefore, Jessie needs 70 liters on a trip of 700 kilometers.

4. APPLICATION (COT – Obj. 6)

Identify if the given Phrase illustrates Direct Variation or Not.
1. The number of hours to finish a job to the number of men working
2. The number of persons sharing a pie to the size of the slices of the pie
3. The area of the wall to the amount of paint used to cover it
4. The age of a used car to its resale value
5. The amount of money raised in a concert to the number of tickets sold

Write the formula of the given statement and the constant of

variation (k).
1. m is directly proportional to n
2. An employee’s salary(S) varies directly as the number of days(d) he has
worked
3. The cost(C) of fish varies directly as its weight(w) in kilograms
4. The area(A) of a triangle is proportional to its height(h)
5. The weight(W) of an object is directly proportional to its mass(m)

Solve each indicated value.

1. If y varies directly as x, and y=12 when x=4, find y when x=12.
2. If d varies directly as f, and d=18 when f=6, find f when d=30.
3. If c varies directly as j, and c=8 when j=24, find c when j=6.

Solve the following problems. (Group Activity)

1. A mailman can sort out 738 letters in 6 hours. If the number of sorted
letters varies directly as the number of working hours, how many letters can
be sorted out in 9 hours?
2. A teacher charges Php 500 per hour of tutorial service to a second year
high school student. If he spends 3 hours tutoring per day, how much will he
receive in 20days?
3. The rate of the bus that rolls down a hill is directly proportional to the
length of time it rolls. At the end of 10 seconds, its rate is 30mph. How long
will it take the bus to have a rate of 42mph? 60 mph? 81 mph?

V. EVALUATION (COT – Obj. 2) (COT – Obj. 9)
