Topic: Effective Mission Statements

OBJECTIVES OF THE ACTIVITY: To familiarize the students with the ‘Mission Statements”
of real-life organizations which are the basis of successful strategic management.

LEARNING OUTCOME: After successfully attempting this assignment, the students will be able
to analyze and develop effective Mission Statements.

SCENARIO: Mission is the purpose of or a reason for an organization’s existence. It includes


fundamental and unique purpose which makes an organization different from others. Mission
Statements are essential for effectively establishing objectives and formulating strategies.

Carefully read the given mission statements of two educational institutes and answer the following
questions accordingly.

Mission Statement of Quaid-e-Azam University (QU):

• Functioning as a research oriented institution dedicated to academic excellence, open-


mindedness and equality.
• Maintaining and fostering highest moral and practiced values while teaching students to seek
knowledge logically, be imaginative, and converse effectively to meet the promising needs
of the society.
• Ensuring and supporting faculty and staff to continue their professional and intellectual
development.
• Helping the society through creating harmony between people by bringing them together
from every corner of the country.

Mission Statement of Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB):

“To produce and intellectual capital of high socioeconomic value through conduct of top quality
academic and research programs and establishing, as well as sustaining, an environment conducive
to teaching, research, innovation, service and community engagement activities.”
REQUIREMENTS:
Based on the nine Characteristics/ Components of an effective Mission statement, taught in
Lesson # 06, answer the following questions:

NOTE: For solving this assignment, use the “Mission Statement Evaluation file” (in WORD
format) that is provided in the download section of LMS.

1. Mission Statement of QU (4 Marks)

a. Customers: Who are the firm's customers?


b. Products or services: What are the firm's major products or services?
c. Markets: Geographically, where does the firm compete?
d. Technology: Is the firm technologically current?
e. Concern for survival, growth, and profitability: Is the firm committed to growth and
financial soundness?
f. Philosophy: What are the basic beliefs, values, aspirations, and ethical priorities of the firm?
g. Self-concept: What is the firm's distinctive competence or major competitive advantage?
h. Concern for public image: Is the firm responsive to social, community, and environmental
concerns?
i. Concern for employees: Are employees a valuable asset of the firm?

2. Mission Statement of IUB (4 Marks)

a. Customers: Who are the firm's customers?


b. Products or services: What are the firm's major products or services?
c. Markets: Geographically, where does the firm compete?
d. Technology: Is the firm technologically current?
e. Concern for survival, growth, and profitability: Is the firm committed to growth and
financial soundness?
f. Philosophy: What are the basic beliefs, values, aspirations, and ethical priorities of the firm?
g. Self-concept: What is the firm's distinctive competence or major competitive advantage?
h. Concern for public image: Is the firm responsive to social, community, and environmental
concerns?
i. Concern for employees: Are employees a valuable asset of the firm?

3. Evaluation of Mission Statements (2 Marks)

Based on the components of the mission statement, is the mission statement of QU better or
that of IUB? Provide proper justification for your choice. No marks will be given for this part
without justifications.

Hint: You may take help from the Evaluation Matrix of Mission Statement from Lesson # 06.
IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS:
 Students are advised to study the whole text carefully.
 Try not to include any irrelevant material in the solution. Discussion must strictly be within the
premises of given scenario.
 Try to come up with precise and original answers.
 Any act of plagiarism like copy paste from internet will result in ZERO marks.
 Assignments reaching after the due date would not be considered.
 Make sure to upload the solution file before the due date on VULMS.
 Any submission made via email after the due date will not be accepted.

FORMATTING GUIDELINES:
 Use the font style “Times New Roman” or “Arial” and font size “12”.
 It is advised to compose your document in MS-Word format.
 Use black font color only.
 Use APA style for referencing and citation.

Please note that your assignment will be graded as Zero (0), if:
 It is submitted after the due date.
 The file you uploaded does not open or is corrupt.
 It is in any format other than MS-Word or Open Office, e.g. Excel, PowerPoint, PDF etc.
 It is cheated or copied from other students, internet, books, journals etc.

Note related to load shedding: Please be proactive


Dear students as you know that post mid-term semester activities have started, and load shedding
problem is also prevailing in our country. Keeping in view the fact, you all are advised to post your
activities as early as possible without waiting for the due date. For your convenience, activity
schedule has already been uploaded on VULMS for the current semester, therefore no excuse will
be entertained after due date.

IMPORTANT:
24 hours extra / grace period after the due date are usually available to overcome uploading
difficulties. This extra time should only be used to meet the emergencies and above-mentioned due
date should always be treated as final to avoid any inconvenience.
