Project Question

How can a coach make or break an

athletes career?
Why I chose this question

● I’ve had a lot of coaches

○ Some better than others
● There is a massive difference between
coaches styles
○ Some thrive under differents styles
● How a coach could lead someone to
quitting the sport
Mentor - Jack Brown

Why him?
● He is one of my favorite coaches
○ 14’s C team
● Also my strength training coach
○ Owns a company
○ Aqua strength performance
● Was the USC strength coach
○ Offered a full time job

He has a variety of coaching experience at

different levels and different professions
The three types of coaches

Autocratic Democratic Holistic

the coach only. Coach more of a mentor styles
has the final say in than coach, athletes
everything. make decisions.
“I try to avoid things that I didn’t like as
an athlete myself. Then try to incorporate
my own and others coaching methods”

“I copy the things that made be a great
athlete, what pushed me to play at the
next level”

My Project

Coach my own team to get a perspective as to

how hard it truly is.
What Did I Learn?
Strengths Weaknesses
● Teaching fundamentals ● Progression allowing them to

● Allowing them to have fun get better

● Even play time ● Learning names

● Helping out the weaker kids ● Keeping them focused

● Teaching on the fly

● ETC
What I Learned

● Each athlete reacts differently to every aspect of coaching

● Coaches get their style from their coaches before them

○ Takes their aspects

○ Avoid things that that they disliked

● Everyone loves the coach that they were able to be friends with
