Problem No. 1: A refrigeration system operating on the reversed Carnot cycle rejects
5600 kJ/min. The minimum and the maximum temperatures are 240 K and 350 K,
respectively. Sketch the T-S diagram and find (a) the power input required, (b) the TOR
developed.
Problem No. 2: A Carnot refrigerating system picks up heat at 272 K and requires a
power input of 1.75 kW per TOR. Find:
a. COP
b. The temp in °C at which heat is discharged;
c. If the upper temperature in (b) is changed to 311 K, what will be the power input in
kW per TOR?
Problem No. 3: An ammonia ice plant operates on simple saturation cycle at the
following temperatures: condensing temp = 38 deg C and evaporating temp = - 12 deg
C. It produces 30 tons of ice per day at - 10 deg C from water at 26 deg C. Determine:
a) capacity of refrigeration plant in TOR
b) mass flow rate of refrigerant in kg/sec
c) isentropic discharge temp
d) compressor bore and stroke if its volumetric efficiency is 65%. The compressor rpm=
1400 and stroke/bore ratio= 1.2
e) HP of compressor if its adiabatic efficiency is 85% and mechanical efficiency is 95%.
f) Theoretical and actual COP.
