OUTSCALING OF RICE BASED FARMING SYSTEM (RICE + DUCK) IN CLAVERIA,

CAGAYAN

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The Department of Agriculture - Northern Cagayan Experiment Station started


the BAR funded project entitled “Outscaling of Rice Based (Rice + Duck) Farming System
in Claveria, Cagayan” at Barangay Mabnang and Union, Claveria, Cagayan last July 2020
to achieve food security due to the impact of pandemic Covid-19 disrupting the
agricultural value chains and posing risks to every household. The project aims to
support farmers boost their productivity and profitability by encouraging farmers to
venture and adopt integrated farming system like rice-duck farming system. This
technology is a friendly technology and business opportunity.
The project has one hundred twenty-two (122) farmer beneficiaries and
received 5 heads (1 male and 4 female) of Muscovy ducks each. Two (2) units of
hammer mill, 2 units of plucker machine and two (2) units of egg incubator in each
barangay. The distributed ducks were subjected to backyard raising and two (2)
demonstration site was established to showcase the rice + duck technology at the rate
of 200 heads of Muscovy duck / hectare. To encourage farmers to venture the ducks
into business opportunity, the project showcased and highlighted three (3) main duck
meat products: Duck marinado, Muscovy wings and Bibeko.

Rice + Duck Technology


The palay check system was followed in rice production system following the key
checks such as high-quality seeds, well leveled field, synchronous planting, water
management, proper nutrient management, harvest and post-harvest management.
The technology of rice + duck farming system was implemented following the

Cagayan Valley Duck Delights


Duck meat is an excellent source of protein.  Protein keeps us healthy by building
and repairing our muscles, skin and blood. Duck meat is an excellent source of iron,
providing 50% of the iron we need in a day. And aside from the Rice + Duck Technology
that was introduced by the project, the Cagayan Valley Duck Delight was developed to
sustain food security during pandemic and alternative meat product of pork for farmers
to venture the ducks into business opportunity.
 Duck Marinado

Duck marinado is a ready-to-cook duck


meat product. It can be cooked fried,
adobo or caldereta. The product is
available in assorted cut size: breast, neck,
legs and thigh.

 Muscovy Wings

The Muscovy wings is a ready-to-eat duck


meat product and inspired by the recipe
buffalo wings. Only the wings part is
cooked for this dish.

 Bibeko
The bibeko is a classic “pulutan” and specialty
of Cagayanos and Apayaonos. It is made from
internal organs like liver, gizzard, heart and
intestines. It is cooked with leaves of pomelo
and siling labuyo.

OUTCOME

The result of the project signifies the efficiency of integrating ducks in the
irrigated rice ecosystem comparable in the yield of rice alone. The study build-up
community awareness that Muscovy ducks are beneficial in rice farming, likewise,
created business opportunity, hence, the project was expanded to four barangays in
Claveria, Cagayan (Nagsabaran, Sto. Nino, Tabbugan and Capannikian) with the full
support of the Mayor in LGU-Claveria to adapt the introduced technology.
The Cagayan Valley Duck Delights recipes which opened as business opportunity
to farmers were transferred to two FCAs: Union and Mabnang Duck Raisers Association
and two restaurants from Abulug and Claveria, Cagayan, Cuisina Trinidad and Four
Sisters Food Hub.

GOVERNMENT SUPPORT SERVICES


The project is a BAR funded and implemented by Department of Agriculture –
Northern Cagayan Experiment Station with collaborating agencies, the DARFO-02
Research Division and Local Government Unit of Claveria that ensures and support the
implementation of the project to the FCAs.
