Broken - Mending and Repair in a Throwaway World

Ludion 2023 ISBN 9789493039896 Acqn 33414
Hb 22x27cm 232pp col ills £39

We live in a single-use society, where fashion is fast, disposability is the norm and it is easier to
replace than to repair. We don't need to mend things anymore - and yet we do. What is it about
Homo faber - man the maker - that cannot resist fixing what is broken? As we start to decouple
from the linear take-make-waste model that has dominated Western economies since the
Industrial Revolution and seek something more circular, an enquiry into what mending means has
never been more urgent. With a foreword by The Repair Shop's Jay Blades, this new book by
craft and circularity advocate Katie Treggiden celebrates 25 artists, curators, menders and re-
makers who have rejected the allure of the fast, disposable and easy in favour of the patina of
use, the stories of age and the longevity of care and repair. Accompanying these profiles, six in-
depth essays explore the societal, cultural and environmental roles of mending in a throwaway
world.

Eyes + shapes + colours

Corraini Edizioni 2023 ISBN 9791254930359 Acqn 33417
Pb 22x22cm 28pp col ills £19.50

Can colours and shapes have a life of their own? Eyes + shapes + colours is a game and
something of an experiment. When you put an eye in the middle of seemingly abstract shapes,
they start to come to life and investigate their surroundings, embracing each other, playing,
folding over, and wandering around. What if we changed the position of the eyes we could give
life to a different character? A book - the brainchild of designer and animator Lucas Zanotto -
where shapes and colors are interwoven with lightness and irony.

Nasser Road - Political Posters in Uganda

Eriskay Connection 2023 ISBN 9789492051929 Acqn 33471
Pb 20x28cm 64pp col ills £27.50

Anything can be produced and sold along Nasser Road in Kampala, from university degrees to
fake identity cards. But one of its main products is posters portraying heads of state and dictators
as superpowered fighters - highly charged geopolitical depictions of the struggle against Western
imperialism, in which international villains are celebrated as anti-heroes. The United States,
Russia, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, North Korea, China, and various African nations are all players in
a glorified military-industrial complex. Collector Kristof Titeca presents a selection of posters, with
contextual images by Ugandan photographers and an essay by activist Yusuf Serunkuma.

Pokemon X Kogei - Playful Encounters of Pokemon and Japanese Craft

Tokyo Bijutsu 2023 ISBN 9784808712686 Acqn 33416
Hb 20x27cm 128pp col ills £39

The catalogue for this exhibition at the National Crafts Museum in Kanazawa opens up a rich
world of imagination, inspired by the fusion of pop culture and artisanship. Pokemon have been
around since 1996, and traditional crafting techniques for centuries or even millennia. Yet there
are many similarities between the two. The raw materials used in crafts and the energy used in
the manufacturing process include earth, plants, metal, water, fire, electricity, and other elements
analogous to the various Pokemon types. The latter's systems for refining, cultivating, collecting,
and exchanging also seem to overlap with the skills of the craftspeople who have created these
astonishing objects.

Sheung Yiu - Everything is a Projection

Eriskay Connection 2023 ISBN 9789492051943 Acqn 33415
Pb 17x24cm 304pp col ills £35.50

During the pandemic, Sheung Yiu started digitising everything on his desk at home, the inevitable
confined space to which he was bound during lockdown. He created 3D models of scores of
items and added texture details using a technique known as projective texturing. His physical
desktop transformed into a 3D digital world. The process produced a dataset of digital objects
that reflected his everyday life - intimate, yet strangely generic. The book explores one of many
visual systems that form the basis of virtual reality and gaming, exposing the inner mechanisms
of computer graphics that are shaping our world. With an interview with Jaakko Lehtinen, head
researcher at NVIDIA.

cc-tapis an encounter with Charlotte Perriand (1972-2023)

A Publisher 2023 ISBN 9789077745281 Acqn 33413
Pb 15x21cm 48pp col ills £43.50

By 1972, architect and designer Charlotte Perriand had dedicated a significant amount of her life
to Les Arcs, a sprawling ski complex in the French Alps that would become one of her most
ambitious projects. Six unpublished colour studies for a series of woven panels intended to
brighten the alpine apartments, dated that same year, have laid untouched for 50 years in her
Paris archives. Now they are brought to life by cc-tapis as a collection of handwoven carpets,
presented in an exhibition celebrating Perriand's unpublished archives and mastery of colour -
testament to her lifelong passion for artisanal craft, from Japanese lacquer work to line block
printing.
