Histoplasmosis Pathogens

Histoplasma capsulatum is found globally and


may infect both humans and animals.

Human/Primates: H. duboisii (africa)

Equine Histoplasmosis: H. farciminosum


CLINICAL SYMPTOMS
weight loss
fever,
anorexia,
respiratory signs
lameness.

Gastrointestinal signs
diarrhea with hematochezia or melena
are common in dogs.

Itraconazole (10 mg/kg every 24 hours- Dogs and
cats)
Ketoconazole (10–15 mg/kg, every 12 hours, for 4–6
months- Dog)
Amphotericin B
~ DIAGNOSIS ~
Antigen testing using a quantitative antigen
ELISA can be performed on urine, serum, and
CSF
H Capsulatum can be cultured from tissue
specimens, fine-needle aspirates and body
fluids
