Design of Steel & Timber Structures Worksheet Ch-1 & Ch-2 Unity University

1. Select the lightest double angles section placed back-to-back for a tension member supporting a service design
axial tension load of 500 kN. The member is to be connected at the end to 12mm thick gusset plate between
back of the angles by two rows of 18mm diameter bolts in a regular pattern. Select among;
i. Equal leg angles,
ii. Unequal leg angles (for unequal leg angles, connection is made through longer leg of angles)
2. For the truss given below; Design the tension and compression members, considering the same type of cross
section, that is: square hollow sections (SHS), with welded connections between the members of the structure.

3. Calculate the maximum compassion load that can be supported by the built up compression member shown
below. The member is 14.0m long and its ends are fixed in both the strong and weak bucking axis?

4. Check the capacity of a column subjected to an axial compression force 6000 KN, using a UC 254 ×254×167
(universal column) cross section in S 355 steel. The column is supported as shown in the figure. With length of 5
m.
