HISTORICAL, CULTURE, AND HERITAGE ATTRACTIONS

PAOAY CHURCH

The Church of Saint Augustine,


commonly known as the Paoay
Church, is the Roman Catholic parish
church of the municipality of Paoay,
Ilocos Norte in the Philippines.
Completed in 1710, the church is
famous for its distinct architecture
highlighted by the enormous
buttresses on the sides and back of
the building.

CAPE BOJEADOR LIGHTHOUSE

The lighthouse of Cape Bojeador is


the Philippines’ highest elevated
lighthouse that is still active and kept
in the original structure dating back to
the Spanish-Colonial period.
NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

LA PAZ SAND DUNES

La Paz Sand Dunes is a unique


attraction in the city of Laoag for
being a sandy coastal desert with an
area of 85 square kilometers. This is
considered to be a National
Geological Monument because of its
uniqueness being a desert
environment. La Paz is just a part of a
long stretch of the Ilocos Norte Sand
Dunes. It spans from Currimao to
Pasuquin. This is locally called
Bantay Bimmaboy in which they perceive that the dunes resemble the shape of pigs.

KAPURPURAWAN ROCK
FORMATION

The Kapurpurawan rock formation is


located on the rocky coast of Burgos,
Ilocos Norte. It is known for its
creamy white and streamlined
limestone formations, which have
been sculpted by different oceanic
and weather forces. Burgos is located
on the northwestern tip of Ilocos
Norte.
BUILT ATTRACTIONS

PATAPAT VIADUCT

Standing 31 meters above the sea


shore, Patapat Viaduct is considered
as the Philippine’s 5th longest bridge
with its 1.3-kilometer length that
snakes around the mountain edge. It
was built for the purpose of
preventing the problem of landslides
in the area which caused vehicular
accidents in the past.

BANGUI WINDMILLS

The Bangui Windmills wind farm is


recognized as the largest in
Southeast Asia and sells power to the
Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative
(INEC). The expected life span of the
wind generation equipment is 21
years. The windmills form a gracefully
shaped arc that reflect the shoreline
alongside Bangui Bay, and face the
West Philippine Sea.

CALLE CRISOLOGO

Calle Crisologo in Vigan, Ilocos Sur


province, is one of the most beautiful
streets in the Philippines. It boasts a
dense concentration of centuries-old
stone houses, lovely tungsten lamps,
and antique cobblestone, where
horse-drawn carriages or calesas still
to this day are used for transport.

SYQUIA MANSION

The Syquia Mansion is a wonderful


example of bahay na bato
architecture prevalent during the later
Spanish Colonial Era. The typical
structure consisted of a ground floor
made of stone or brick and mortar
with the upper floors of wood. No
cement, no hollow blocks, no steel
bars. No blueprints either. This
mansion was built using a craftsman’s
expert eye and traditional building
materials.

DANCING FOUNTAIN

According to history, Plaza Salcedo


was susceptible to fire during the
Spanish regime. So the plan then was
to create a man-made lagoon to
minimize fire incidents. The original
concept dating back some hundreds
of years ago is retained until March
2013 wherein a dramatic addition of
the Dancing Fountain has been
added to the once quiet and laid back
park in between the Vigan Cathedral
and the Ilocos Sur Capitol.

BALUARTE

For animal and nature loving folks,


Baluarte Zoo is a must-visit attraction
located at the heart of Vigan City. It is
a zoological park that aims to protect
and conserve endangered species and
wildlife. It is owned and maintained by
Chavit Singson.

BALUARTE WATCH TOWER

The Luna Watchtower was built during


the pre-Spanish times as a lookout
point for impending attack by pirates
or danger from the sea. Because of its
massiveness and height, guards were
able to warn the residents of Luna and
prepare the peace officers to defend
the properties and lives of their
constituents.

BASILICA OF OUR LADY OF


CHARITY

Our Lady of Charity is also known


locally as Apo Caridad. It is also
remarked as the Protectress of
Ilocandia's crops and harvests from
pestilence and natural calamities, and
widely known for "precipitating rain in
times of drought". Our Lady of Charity
made the town of Agoo a major
religious center of the north.
NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

TANGADAN FALLS

Situated in the town of San Gabriel,


Tangadan Falls is one of at least ten
waterfalls in the town. The waterfall is
a two-tier cascade along Baroro River
with cold water emanating from the
hinterland of the province adjacent to
the Cordillera Mountain Range.

TUDDINGAN FALLS

One particular waterfalls that is pretty


easy and accessible is Tuddingan
Falls in the Municipality of Naguilian.
Formerly called Burayok Falls, the falls
is just about seven kilometers away
from the town proper.

BAHAY NA BATO

These are the


old houses or bahay na bato lining the
cobble stone street of Calle Crisologo,
Vigan was awarded by Unesco the title
of Heritage City.This village was
established in the 16th century and
used by the Spanish people during the
16th century.

MA-CHO TEMPLE

This Taoist temple was built in the


1970s dedicated to the Chinese deity
Matzu, a powerful protector of the sea
and a patron of fishermen. That is why
the temple is facing the sea.

CAPE BOLINAO LIGHTHOUSE

It is one of the oldest lighthouses in the


Philippines and is situated on Punta
Piedra Point, a towering hill of solid
rock, which is the sharp point of Cape
Bolinao itself. It is the second tallest of
five lighthouses in the country.

MINOR BASILICA OF OUR LADY


OF THE ROSARY MANAOAG

The Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the


Rosary of Manaoag is one the most
visited churches in the Philippines.
Tradition holds that the name of the
town, Manaoag, came from the story
of apparition of the Blessed Virgin
Mary to a farmer on a treetop. The
story relates that in the center of a
cloud appeared the Virgin of the
Rosary and her most holy Son.

NATURAL ATTRACTIONS
PATAR BEACH

Its location that faces the West


Philippine Sea, Patar Beach offers the
best view of the sunset in the area.
The beach is also categorized by
powerful waves and beautiful rock
formations that you can find along the
southern coast.

ENCHANTED CAVE

The name itself portrays its mystical


beauty. The entire place is really
enchanted since it is like a huge coral
reef that emerged from underwater.
Local people and tour guides believe
that millions of years ago Bolinao was
under the sea due to the discovery of
coral rocks (limestones) and fossilized
giant clams around the area.
