● Describe the basic chemical components of proteins, carbohydrates, fats(lipids), vitamins, minerals and explain their function in the body ● Describe the requirements for a balanced diet and how these requirements may vary among people with different lifestyles ● Explain the importance of a balanced diet ● Describe the food groups in Canada’s Food guide ● Compare Canada’s food Guide with Food guides from other countries ● Analyse information given on a food label ● Distinguish between different types of food additives ● Calculate the amount of food energy required for a given activity and convert kJ to Calories ● Describe the importance of dietary fibre ● Evaluate the nutritional content of fast foods using nutritional information provided by the restaurants ● Describe the structure and function of the components of the digestive system with respect to physical and chemical digestion (label diagrams) o Mouth o Esophagus o Stomach o Small intestine o Large intestine o Rectum o Liver(gall bladder) o Pancreas o Salivary glands ● Describe the role of antacids ● Describe the functioning of different enzymes in the body ● Describe how enzyme activity is regulated by hormones ● Describe how nutrients are absorbed into the body ● Identify the simplest form(s) of the 3 major nutrients which can be used by the body ● To be able to describe various fad diets and the benefits and risks associated with each. ● Know diseases/disorders which affect the digestive system, such as: IBS, Crohn’s, GERD
