1. A clamp is used to hold two pieces of wood together as shown in Figure. 1. The clamp has
a double square thread with a mean diameter of 10 mm and a pitch of 3 mm. The coefficient
of friction between threads is μs = 0.45. If a maximum couple of 50 Nm is applied in tightening
the clamp, determine (a) the force exerted on the pieces of wood by clamp, and (b) the couple
required to loosen the clamp. [15 marks]

2. A flexible cable, which supports the 120 kg load is passed over a fixed circular drum, and
subjected to a force P to maintain equilibrium (Figure 2). The coefficient of static friction μs
between the cable and the fixed drum is 0.35.
(a) For α = 0, determine the maximum and minimum values of P in order not to raise or lower
the load. [6 marks]
(b) For P = 600 N, determine the minimum value of angle α before the load begins to slip.
[4 marks]

3. Using the method of virtual work, determine the couple M, which must be applied at O in
order to support the mechanism in the position 𝜃 = 450 (Figure 3). The masses of the disk at C,
bar OA, and bar BC are mo, 0.5m, and m, respectively. [5 marks]

4. A hollow plate clutch having a single driving plate with contact surfaces on each side is
required to transmit 110 kW at 1250 rpm. The outer diameter of the contact surfaces is to be
300 mm. The coefficient of friction is 0.4. Consider the relationship between power (P) and
torque/moment (T) is 𝑇 = (𝑃 × 60)/(2𝜋𝑁), where N is in rpm. Determine the following:

(a)The inner diameter of the friction surfaces by assuming a uniform pressure of 0.17 N/mm2.

[5 marks]

(b) Assuming the same dimensions and the same total axial thrust, calculate the maximum
torque that can be transmitted and the maximum intensity of pressure when uniform wear
conditions have been reached. [5 marks]

5. Calculate the horizontal force F required to keep the 60-kg platform (as shown in Figure 5)
in its balanced position in terms of the angle the supporting links make with the horizontal. The
three identical links each weigh 15 kg. [10 marks]

Q 6. What is the value of P in the system shown in Figure 6 to cause the motion of 400 N
block to move the right side? Assume that pulley is frictionless and friction coefficient between
both the blocks and surface is 0.2. Solve The Problem Using MATLAB [10 marks]
