OF
WILLIAM
&
MARGARET
CORMANY
INTRODUCTION...
This brief compilation of facts, stories, photos and interesting tidbits focuses on four
ancestral generations of the Cormany branch of my Family Tree: Descendants of William and
Margaret Cormany.
The book began as a labor of love, gratitude and curiosity. I intended on spending about a
month on gathering data I already had. The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn and it was
difficult not to get lost in the stories. As a result, some people have a lot more information than
others.
Most of the information was taken from documents available online such as Census records,
Court documents and Old Newspapers.
This book is in no way as extensive as I would like for it to be. It is merely a start. I hope
others will contribute and continue to make it fatter and longer.
PLEASE NOTE:
If I did not have a photo of the person depicted by their name, I randomly selected an image from
the internet. These images serve as place holders for photographs of actual faces .
>> If the frame has a white-lined box around the photo – the photo IS of the
ACTUAL PERSON'S FACE.
>> If the frame around the image is solid, it IS NOT of the person it's depicting.
>> These images are just for aesthetics.
Of course, this project is one that will remain in a state of being perpetually updated
with corrections, additions and deletions. Every time I proof read it, I find another error.
Please forgive.

Descendants of William Cormany & Margaret Coldsmith
The following example shows the most common numbering conventions which appear in this
Descendant Book.
1. John3 Smith (Robert2, Scott1) born 17 Feb 1849 in New York, NY, died 3 Jan 19307. He married 30
Jun 1870 Mary Jones, 4977.
2 i Bobby4
3 ii Susan4, born 25 Dec 1871.
Explanation:
2 i Bobby4
His number is two (2), he is the first (i) child in the family, and of the fourth ( 4)
Generation.
I have gone against that convention and, if I found noteworthy information on those
ancestors who never married or never had children, I included them in numerical order.

1. William1 Cormany was born on 04 Oct 1810 in Edinburgh, Scotland and died on 03 Apr 1897
in Grundy Co., IA, at age 86. He was buried in Mt. Carroll, IL.
When he was 24, William married 21-year-old Margaret Coldsmith, daughter of William and
Catharine Colesworthy Coldsmith, on 11 Nov 1834 in Chambersburg, PA.
She was born in 1813 in Lebanon, PA, and died in 1863 in Carroll Co., IL, at age 49.
William and Margaret and had seven children in 20 years during their 30-year marriage:
William and Margaret, along with six children, resided in Lancaster, Fairfield County, OH
in 1850. By 1856, the family was living in Mt. Carroll, IL, where their youngest daughter,
Maggie, was born.
********************************
Several references provided a few insights and facts that I combined into a short
biography about the couple from whom we all got started.
In brief, the progenitor of the family, William Cormany, was born over 212 years
ago. He was a hard-working family man who lived a long, difficult, determined and
faith-filled life, who lived to see over 30 offspring born.

Descendants of William Cormany & Margaret Coldsmith
William and Margaret (Coldsmith) Cormany, the former of whom was born in 1810 in
Edinburgh, Scotland, and the latter in 1813 in Pennsylvania, of Dutch descent, met and married in
Pennsylvania in 1834, where William's parents had settled after coming to the States in 1833.
(Inconsistencies: One source suggested Margaret was born in 1817 and another
said William & Margaret were married in 1837. I'm 90% sure my dates are correct.)
In 1840, with two young children in tow, the couple started for Ohio in a covered wagon.
When they were twelve miles from their destination, the wagon broke down, and before they could
resume their journey, their son, William Augustus, was born 27 January 1841.
Several weeks later, the little family was back on the road and finally reached their new
“hometown” at Lancaster, Ohio. They spent about 20 years there as William worked at his trade of
harness making and Margaret tended to the children and the house. William also engaged in the

manufacturing black-snake whips, which was a side gig, contracted for by the United States
Government.
In 1856, William took his wife and children to Illinois. Six years later, in November of 1862,
their daughter Martha passed away. Within a year of Martha's death, at the age of 49, William's
wife, Margaret died.
Although her father had survived fighting in the War of 1812 and her husband survived the
Mexican War, some believe that she grieved herself to death over not knowing the fate of her
three oldest sons. George, William and Jacob were away from home, serving the Union during
the Civil war.
Had she lived a little longer, Margaret would have known that, not only did all her sons
survive, Jacob, the youngest of the three, was given a medal of honor for carrying his wounded
captain from the field of battle under fire.
William survived his wife for more than 33 years, dying in 1897 at the age of 87. He lived to
see 26 of his 27 grandchildren and seven of at least 36 great grandchildren come into the world.
To date (April 2023), there are 127 people (including spouses) that comprise the branches of this
four-generation branch of our Cormany Family Tree.

Of Jim and Mary's four children, William 'Charles' is the only one who got married.

quite some time. Later, he became the State Fire Marshall and was recognized for a

May was very active in the community and the Presbyterian Church. She loved to play

the day before his daughter's birthday, too.

Janet was quite a famous Vaudeville Singer who performed with the Keith Circuit in the
early 1900s. Her stage name was Jean Challon and became known to her family and
friends as Jean instead of Janet. There are many articles published with her name
mentioned or featured. Even though she was my Great-great-Aunt, I knew her simply as
" Aunt Jean". She and my grandmother, May Moore Friend, were very close. In fact,
Aunt Jean managed an unwed mothers' home in Pennsylvania and helped my
grandparents choose the children they adopted.

Charlie registered for the WWII Draft. Fortunately, he didn't have to fight. He and Anna
had 45 happy years together and are buried next to each other for eternity.

Allie and Fred were married for thee years before they had their first child. Three and a

girl. Sadly, Allie died when her daughter was only 10 years old. What's worse, is that
Fred lost his eldest son, Albert, less than a year later.
I found these headstones for Fred and his mother, Ellen. Notice how the surname is
spelled differently...

Not until I found Maggie's obituary, did I know that Marguerite and Nellie had
been married.
When Lizzie's sister, Allie, died in 1929, Lizzie was listed in her obituary as Mrs.

she was married and had two children. This article explains...

February 1886, the third of six children born to Peter and Maggie. In 1910, Emma

Since Maggie's 1922 obit lists Nellie as Mrs. Cassius Blair. She must have married
sometime between 1911 and 1919. The latest date of any article I found about
Nellie or her husband was 1928. I don't know what happened to them after that.
Cassius D Blair was an attorney in the Los Angeles area in the early 1900s.

Although I can find no record of Emma's marriage, the 1940 census states she was
divorced and living in a hospital during the taking of that year's census. Her name
was listed as Emma Wetzel.

Bill fought in WWI. He and Vivian had a beautiful wedding that was written about in the
local newspaper. Bill Hickey, who was 21 years old, was the Deputy County Tax Collector,
and had just finished the home they would call their own. Sadly, Bill died two years later in
1917.

May Moore and John Friend met when they were children and had a mutual crush on
each other from the time they were twelve. I've included a copy of a postcard May
wrote to him soon after her 14th birthday. Although they both dated other people
occasionally, they were destined to spend their lives together.
May and John had a lovely wedding at her dad's Estate on Woodbine Avenue in Hartwell,
OH. They were married six years when they learned they could not conceive a child and
adopted a son, Charles William from The Crittiden House in Pennsylvania. Six years later
they adopted a little girl from the same place.
They raised their children in Wyoming, OH, which shares a border with Hartwell, the
town where the Cormany family settled. Like May and John, their kids attended
Wyoming High School and were members of the Wyoming Presbyterian Church.
John and May lived happily together for over 65 years. They liked to travel, entertain
and participate in church and community activities in Wyoming, OH.
John worked in Accounting at Proctor and Gamble before buying the Robinson Dry
Cleaning business on Wyoming Avenue in the 1950s.
I could write 500 plus pages on the memorable experiences I enjoyed as their
granddaughter. A great deal of the goodness in me was inspired by what I learned by
being around them.
Following the next page, is a copy of the pages from the booklet I made for May's
Memorial Service...which was held at the Wyoming Presbyterian Church in her
hometown in 2009. For 97 fairly healthy years, she was highly respected and, by the
number of those who came to her service, – she was fondly remembered.

died there 11 February 1996 at the age of 76.
In 1940, ten years before Barbara married Tom, she was married to Herbert McLaughlin,
with whom she had a son and daughter.
In 1950, she married Tom Cleavenger, and within their first two and a half years, she gave birth to
two more children. Their first son was born a year after their wedding and their second was born a

He married on 14 June 1911 in Trinidad, Colorado, Mary 'Edna' Walker, daughter of Edward
and Minnie Walker. She was born in 1888.
I did not find the family in the 1920 census, but I assume they were still together until
1921, since that is when their youngest child was born. However, according to the 1930
census, Will was working as a Lumber Inspector and was living alone, while Edna and her
children (Frances, 15 and William, 9 ) were living with her mother, Minnie. By 1940 Edna
was renting a place where she was living only with her son, William, who was 19 then.
Apparently, Will and Edna separated sometime before 1930 and she never remarried.

Vera and Lewis had four sons in little less than seven years, which is about how long their

Evidently, Lewis married and divorced his second wife, F. J. Pitts, between 1921 and 1929.
According to the 1930 census, sons George and Melvin were living with their step-mother,
Mrs. Pitts and listed as her step-sons even though she was married to someone new at the
time.
Lewis married his third wife Ruth Graf,on 9 November 1940 in Cuyahoga, Ohio. She was
born in 1893 and died in 1979 in Akron, Ohio. Their marriage did not make it to the ten-

Elliott was married five times. Although he was the step-dad to his wives' children, he
had only one son of his own, as far as I can surmise thus far..
In New York, he married his first wife, Rosamond Fairchild Tanner, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. George Tanner in 1928. She was born in 1907 and died in 1999.
Seven years later, in 1935, he married his second wife, Lucille Hamilton. She was born in

They were still together at the time the 1940 census was taken.

Kyra Petrovskaya was born in 1918 in Russia and died in 1994 as a US citizen.
In 1955, Kyra Shirk appeared on a game show, answered questions about artillery and
won $50,000. By Nov 1957, she was writing her memoirs and raising her 4.5 year old
son, Bennie5,, while adjusting to divorce from Elliott.
I'm not sure how long it was before Elliot married Sarah Jane “ Sally” Moyer. She was
born in 1921 and died in 1981. She was divorced with three sons when she married
Elliott. Their marriage lasted until her death in 1981.
On 26 Sept. 1983 he married Katherine Braun Herz who was born in 1913 and died in
