Nature of Defect
The 16” Stainless Steel line had suffered from a poor weld connection. This had resulted in through wall pin hole leaks on the
circumference of the pipe weld join. The client expressed concerns that the 3 other welds connecting the tee-piece and Long
Radius Elbow may also fail at some point in the future. Due to the geometry of the pipework and vessels in the area, the client
also requested that shear loading be considered. The client therefore requires a composite repair to seal the leak locations,
encapsulate all 3 welds and resist the shear loading incident at the repair area, to bring the line back up to its full design
specification.

Solution
Metalyte Pipeworks solution was
to Prepare the Stainless Steel
pipe using a non-sparking
rotating rough boy tool. The leaks
were to be plugged with epoxy
putty then a high strength Kevlar
impregnated bonding resin was Affected
applied over the full repair area.
weld
This was then wrapped in 30
ayers of Engineered Dragon
composite.

Repair Method
The technicians began by prepar-
ing the pipe around the defects to
allow them to apply the epoxy
plugs. The team then continued
with surface preparation over the
full extent of the repair area. Once
prepped, they applied a layer of
Kevlar reinforced Herculyte LV as
a bond coat.
