Numbers for practice 6

1. he Director of Transportation of a large company is interested in the pattern of

usage of her van pool. She considers her routes to be divided into local and non-
local. She is particularly interested in learning if there is a difference in the
proportion of males and females who use the local routes. She takes a sample of
a day's riders and finds the following:

Male Female Total

Local 20 40 60
Non-local 30 10 40
Total 50 50 100

What are the degrees of freedom of the chi-square test?

What is the expected cell frequency in the Male/Local cell?

What is the calculated value of the Chi-Square test statistic?

What is the critical Chi-Square value for the above Table for a level of significance of
0.05?
What conclusion from the Chi-Square test for the above data can be
made?

2. A sample of 200 components is selected from the output of a factory that uses three
different machines (A, B, C) to manufacture these components. Each component in
the sample is inspected to determine whether or not it is defective. The machine that
produced the component is also recorded. The results are as follows:

Machine
Outcome A B C Total
Defective 8 (12.9%) 6 12 (17.1%) 26 (13.0%)
(8.8%)
Non-defective 54 62 58 174
Total 62 68 70 200

The manager wishes to determine whether or not there is a relationship between the
proportion of defectives and the machine used. Hence, perform a chi-square test.

3. A manager at a car bond didn’t want to stock cars that were bought less frequently
because of their unpopular color. The 5 colors that he imported were; Red, yellow,
green, blue and white.
According to the manager, the expected frequencies or number of customers choosing
each color should follow the percentages of last year. He felt that 20% would choose
yellow, 30% would choose red, 10% would choose green, 10% would choose blue and
30% would choose white.
The manager now took a random sample of 150 customers and sked them their color
preferences. The results are in the table below

Category Observed frequency Expected frequency (E)

color (O)
Yellow 35 30
Red 50 45
Green 30 15
Blue 10 15
White 25 45

Perform a chi-square test.
