South Asia: The Tapestry of Nations

The itinerary of your journey includes the South Asian countries- India, Pakistan,
Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. These countries are closely interrelated with each other. In fact, the
history of India as a sovereign state under its own constitution government began when the
subcontinent was partitioned into the state of India and the state of Pakistan. Pakistan became
an Islamic state, while India chose to be a secular state.
At odds with Pakistan since the partition on August 15, 1947, India intervened in the civil
war that had erupted between West and East Pakistan. This war happened in 1971 and
facilitated the secession of East Pakistan to 3become independent state of Bangladesh.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka (known as Ceylon until 1972) is an independent island state
in the Indian Ocean. It lies off the southeast cost of Peninsular India.

Indian Literature: Making Marks

India, a land overflowing with religion and religious spirit, has written literature that started with
Vedic holy texts sometime after 1500. These homilies and hymns gave rise to the UPANISHADS, a
body of religious prose writings philosophical in nature and dealing with basic problems of
existence. The UPANISHADS tell about the basic tenets of Hinduism, the dominant religion in
India.
Later, oral history, legend, and moral tales were fused into two great books: The Mahabharata,
considered the national epic of India, and the Ramayana.
Other major additions to the literature of India are the Puranas (400 B.C- 1400 A.D ) and the
Panchatantra (450 A. D), which is a collection of five books of fables and short tales interspersed
with poetry. Another form of literature was the shastras, which sought to systematize all learning in
the form of laws for the arts and sciences.
The seventh century A. D saw the peak of classical poetry. Drama and lyric poetry abounded.
During this period, Kalidasa emerged as a poet and writer of note. He produced three masterpieces
of which Shakantula, a play, is the most celebrated.
In the latter part of the Middle Ages, the courts of the Mogul emperors, which produced Perso-
Arabic writing inspired a literature in Urdu. The major artistic form was ghazal, a stylized form of
lyrical folk song.
