0.1 This specification has been prepared by the Design Department (NTDC)
0.2 This Specification is intended for the procurement of material and does not
include all the necessary provisions of a contract.

intended for special energy metering applications in 66KV through 500 KV

2 REFERENCE SPECIFICAITON

2.1 The current transformers shall be designed, manufactured and tested in
accordance with the latest issue of relevant IEC Publication and particulars IEC‐

60044‐I and particulars listed herein.

2.2 In case the requirements laid down herein differ from those given in the IEC
Publication in any particular, the current transformers shall comply with the
requirements listed herein in regard to that item.
3 SERVICE CONDITIONS
3.1 The current transformers and all accessories shall be suitable for satisfactory
operation under the following service conditions:

3.1.2 Relative Humidity
The relative humidity may range from 0 to 100 percent. The maximum value
of the ambient temperature and humidity, however, do not occur
simultaneously. During the monsoon, high humidity may persist for many
days at a time along with temperature ranging from 30°C to 40°C.
3.1.3 Altitude
Installation up to 1000m above sea level.

It may be assumed that the air is not normally heavily polluted by dust,

smoke, aggressive gases, vapors or salt spray. However, at certain times of
the year, severe dust storms may be experienced.

5 CONSTRUCTION
FO
5.1 General
5.1.1 The material and workmanship shall be of best quality and in accordance
with the modern practices. The design shall be such that installation,
replacement and general maintenance may be undertaken with a minimum
of time and expense. Liberal factors of safety shall be used in the design.
5.1.2 The current transformers shall be single pole, single‐core, free standing,
hermetically sealed, oil filled, self contained outdoor type. These shall be
supplied complete with oil level indicators, steel support structures,
solderless clamp type HV terminal connectors for connection to conductor
and/or aluminum tube, terminal boxes with terminals for outgoing secondary
wires, grounding terminals and marshalling boxes as specified.

5.1.3 The oil shall be class I oil conforming to the latest issue of relevant IEC
Publication
5.1.4 The current transformers shall be constructed to provide adequate insulation
for the insulation class specified and to withstand mechanical and thermal
stresses produced during short circuit conditions. All insulation and magnetic
materials shall have proven and well established physical and electrical
properties such as to give continuous and prolonged service without
deterioration.
5.1.5 The current transformers shall be hermetically sealed with appropriate and
most reliable arrangement to accommodate oil level variation. The design of
220 KV & 500 KV CTs shall essentially employ suitable grade of stainless steel
bellows with the provision of suitable device for indicating the position of

bellows which shall be visible from ground level. In case of other designs,
provision shall be made for indicating the oil level.

5.1.6 To obtain multiple ratios, series parallel arrangement for connections of

primary winding shall be provided and it shall be possible to connect the
primary windings externally to change the ratios and the interior of the

transformer should remain scaled.

5.2 Primary Terminal

5.2.1 The primary terminals shall be single‐stem, horizontal, made of copper with

minimum 125 mm length and 60 mm dia. The terminals shall be corona free

and adequately shielded.

5.3 Secondary Terminals and Terminal Boxes
5.3.1 The secondary leads shall be brought out through the current transformer
tank wall be means of multiple bushings, equipped with connectors for 6
sq.mm to 10 sq.mm stranded copper conductor and shall terminate in a low
voltage weather proof box mounted on the side of the tank. The nameplate
shall be fixed at the outside of the terminal box to be visible with the box
closed. Connection diagram shall be affixed inside the secondary terminal
box so that it can be easily read while working in the box. Provision shall be
made for scaling the terminal box by means of lashed wire as well as pad
lock.

5.4 Earthing Terminals
5.4.1 Two numbers earthing terminals at diagonally opposite position shall be
provided. Each terminal shall be capable of carrying full short circuit current
and be suitable for accommodating 95 to 185 sq. mm copper earthing lead
depending upon the voltage class of the CT.
5.5 Core and Windings
5.5.1 The core shall be made of high quality non‐aging grain oriented annealed
silicon steel, or some other superior material, carefully selected and tested
to provide the best magnetic characteristics.
5.5.2 The core and windings structure shall be rigidly braced and clamped to

sustain given mechanical short‐time rating. The design of core and windings
shall be such as to ensure high accuracy, uniform impulse distribution

throughout the winding and low leakage reactance.

5.6 H.V. Bushings
5-
5.6.1 The current transformers shall be equipped with H.V. bushing of an

insulation class not less than that of the winding terminal to which they are
R
connected and of creepage distance as specified in section 4.

5.6.2 The bushings shall be manufactured from wet process porcelain and suitable
for continuous outdoor service. The bushings shall be so constructed as to
R
produce a uniform electrical stress distribution throughout, contain no voids,
FO
and be leak proof at all temperatures. Provision shall be available for
measurement of capacitance and dielectric loss factor of each bushing.
5.7 Tank
5.7.1 The tank housing the active part shall be constructed of galvanized steel or
corrosion proof, high quality, cavity‐free, cast aluminum alloy and shall be
suitably reinforced to withstand rigors of handling and excessive pressure
under fault conditions without distortion. All welded joints, pipe work and
valves etc. shall be oil‐leak tested. A clamp on cover shall preferably be
provided to allow access to component parts within the tank without undue
difficulty.

5.7.2 Grounding lugs complete with connectors suitable for 95 to 185 mm2
stranded copper conductor depending upon the voltage class of the CT shall
be provided
5.8 Marshalling Box
5.8.1 A marshalling box shall be mounted on centre phase structure with terminals
to terminate all secondary connections of three CTs in a 3 phase set. Self‐
shorting and isolating type terminals shall be provided for CT secondary
circuits. The box shall be fabricated from steel sheet, not less than 3 mm
thick, seam‐welded at corners. However, in case of rigid frame design, the
thickness of steel sheets may be reduced according to manufacturer’s
standard design. At least 20% spare terminals shall be provided in the box.

5.8.2 The box shall be designed for protection class IP54 in accordance with IEC‐
529. Gland plates shall be provided for proper termination of cables.

5.8.3 Provision shall be made for locking the marshalling bob by pad locks and
sealing by means of lashed wire and lead seals.

5.8.4 Heaters with thermostat and humidistats shall be provided inside each
marshalling box. Lamps with door operated switch shall be provided for

internal illumination. There shall be a single phase power socket inside each

marshalling box. An MCB with auxiliary contact shall be provided for

switching ON/OFF the AC power supply to the heating, illumination and

power socket. The MCB shall also be equipped with sensitive earth fault

protection for personnel safety.

5.8.5 Each star‐point of the CT circuit shall be separately grounded through

The following type tests shall be made on a CT of each type and rating in

accordance with the latest issue of relevant IEC Publication 60044‐1 (2003‐

(1) Short –time current tests, sub‐clause 7.1.

(2) Temperature‐rise test, sub‐clause 7.2
(3) Lightning and switching impulse voltage tests on primary windings as
applicable, sub‐clauses 7.3.2 and 7.3.3
(4) Determination of errors, sub‐clauses 11.4 and 11.6.
(5) Wet test for outdoor type transformers, sub‐clause 7.4.
(6) Radio interference voltage measurement (RIV), sub‐clause 7.5
(7) Measurement of capacitance and dielectric dissipation factor .The
variation of Tan Delta measured at 1.1 Un must be less than 0.2 %
between 20˚C and 75˚C sub‐clause 9.2.
Satisfactory and valid type test reports from an accredited independent
laboratory on similar units may be submitted in lieu of performing the test
for approval. In case the reports are not found relevant or are otherwise not
to the satisfaction of the purchaser, the type tests shall be performed at one

of the designated independent laboratories in presence of representative of

8.3 Routine Test
The following routine tests shall be made on all CTs in accordance with the
IEC Publication 60044‐1 (2003‐02) for all ratios and at all taps when provided:
(1) Verification of terminal markings, sub‐clause 8.1.
(2) Power‐frequency withstand test on primary winding, sub‐clause 8.2.1.
(3) Power‐frequency withstand test on secondary winding and between
sections, sub‐clause 8.3.
(4) Inter‐turn over‐voltage tests, sub‐clause 8.4
(5) Partial discharge measurement, sub‐clause 8.2.2

for seismic and non seismic zones separately taking horizontal
acceleration 0.2 G for seismic zones. Design calculations and guidelines
for these shall also be supplied.
