Abstract

➢ An automatic grass cutting robot is a robotic device designed to cut grass on its own without any
human intervention.
➢ It uses a combination of advanced sensors, algorithms, and mechanical components to navigate
around a designated area and mow the grass in a systematic and efficient manner.
➢ The robot is equipped with a set of sensors that detect the perimeter of the lawn, obstacles, and
other features, which it uses to determine the best path for mowing.
➢ It is powered by a rechargeable battery, which ensures that the robot operates for an extended
period without human intervention.
➢ Additionally, the automatic grass cutting robot can be programmed to follow a specific mowing
schedule, making it an excellent solution for maintaining large and complex lawns.
➢ Overall, the automatic grass cutting robot offers a convenient and innovative solution to
maintaining lawns while saving time and effort.
1.0 Introduction
➢ Maintaining a well-manicured lawn can be a time-consuming and labour-intensive task. However, with
advances in technology, homeowners can now turn to autonomous grass cutting robots to automate this
chore.
➢ These robotic devices are designed to navigate around a designated area and mow the grass in a
systematic and efficient manner, without any human intervention.
➢ The autonomous grass cutting robot operates using a combination of advanced sensors, algorithms, and
mechanical components to detect obstacles, map the terrain, and adjust its cutting pattern accordingly.
➢ The robot is powered by a rechargeable battery, ensuring that it operates for extended periods without
interruption. With the ability to mow lawns consistently and efficiently, the autonomous grass cutting
robot offers a convenient and innovative solution to maintaining lawns and gardens.
➢ In this paper, we will explore the various aspects of the autonomous grass cutting robot, including its
design, functionality, and benefits.
➢ We will also discuss its potential impact on the landscaping industry and how it could change the way
we maintain our lawns in the future.
2.0 Research Methodology

Research was conducted in two methods. Primary research include survey and empathy map. Secondary
research include literature review.

2.1 Primary Research

➢ Primary research on autonomous grass cutting robots can involve several methods, such as surveys, interviews

➢ Overall, primary research can help to identify user needs and preferences, validate design and functionality of autonomous
grass cutting robots, and provide insights for future improvements and innovations.

➢ Based on the survey conducted through Google Forms

Insights and quotes from users that helped shape the design of the robot include:

• "I hate spending my weekends mowing the lawn. It takes so much time and
effort.“
• "I worry about the environmental impact of using gas-powered lawn
mowers.“
• "I would love to have a robot that could take care of the lawn for me.“

• "I struggle with getting to hard-to-reach areas of the lawn with my current
mower.“
• "I'm concerned about the cost of professional lawn care services."

2.2 Secondary Research (Literature Review)

• A literature review on autonomous grass cutting robots reveals that these devices are gaining popularity as a solution for
lawn maintenance. Various studies have investigated the design and functionality of these robots, as well as their benefits
and limitations.

• One study by Mahmood et al. (2019) analysed the performance of a commercially available autonomous grass cutting robot
in a residential lawn. The study found that the robot was able to navigate the lawn efficiently and effectively, with high
precision and accuracy. However, the study also noted that the robot was limited by its battery life, which required frequent
recharging.

• Another study by Abouelwafa et al. (2020) investigated the potential benefits of autonomous grass cutting robots for
commercial landscaping. The study found that these robots could significantly reduce labour costs and increase efficiency,
while delivering consistent and high-quality results. The study also noted that the initial cost of these robots could be a
barrier to adoption, but that the long-term benefits could outweigh the costs.
3.0 Ideate Phase
➢ Theideate phase is a critical stage in the development of an autonomous grass cutting robot. This is where new ideas are
generated, and potential solutions are explored to meet the user needs and address the challenges identified in the
research phase.
1. Manual reel mower: This is a classic, eco-friendly option that requires no gas or electricity. It uses blades that
spin as the mower is pushed forward to cut the grass.
2. Gas-powered lawn mower: This is a popular option that uses gas to power a motor that spins blades to cut the
grass. Gas-powered mowers are good for larger lawns and can handle tougher terrain or thicker grass.
3. Electric lawn mower: This is another option that is environmentally-friendly and produces less noise. It is
powered by electricity and can be corded or cordless. Electric mowers are good for small to medium lawns.
4. Robotic lawn mower: Robotic lawn mowers are similar to autonomous grass cutting robots, but they are smaller
and less advanced. They use sensors and mapping technology to cut the grass automatically, without the need
for human intervention.
5. Scythe: A scythe is a long, curved blade that is used for cutting grass and weeds. It is a traditional tool that
requires some skill to use effectively, but it is an eco-friendly option that does not require any gas or electricity.
6. Grazing animals: Some people use animals like sheep or goats to graze on their lawns, which helps to keep the
grass short and healthy. This is an eco-friendly option that requires no machinery, but it may not be practical for
all situations.

• After verifying all the aspects about the ideas in ideation, we concluded that working on development of
‘AUTONOMOUS GRASS CUTTING ROBOT’ .
4.0 Prototype Phase
➢ After the ideation phase, the next step in the development of an autonomous grass cutting robot is the
prototyping phase. This is where the ideas generated in the ideation phase are transformed into
physical or digital prototypes that can be tested and refined.

4.1 List of various components in the prototype

1. Chassis: This is the body of the robot that supports all other components.
2. Motors and wheels: These components provide the robot with mobility and allow it to move around the lawn.
3. Sensors: Autonomous grass cutting robots are equipped with sensors that help them navigate around obstacles
and avoid collisions. These sensors can include ultrasonic sensors, infrared sensors, and/or cameras.
4. Cutting blades: These are the blades that actually cut the grass. Autonomous grass cutting robots typically
have a rotating blade that cuts the grass as the robot moves across the lawn.
5. Battery: The robot requires a battery to power all of its components.(RECHARGABLE LI-ION BATTERY)
6. Control unit: The
control unit is the brain of the robot, responsible for processing sensor data, controlling the
motors, and managing the cutting blades.(ARDINO BOARD)

5.0 Conclusion

• In conclusion, autonomous grass cutting robots offer a range of benefits for residential, commercial,
agricultural, environmental, and research applications. By automating the lawn care process, these robots can
save time and labour costs while improving the precision and efficiency of grass cutting.

• Throughout the development process, it is important to conduct thorough research and testing to ensure that the
final product meets the needs of the target market. This may involve ideation, prototyping, and testing to refine
the design, functionality, and user experience of the robot.

• Ultimately, the success of an autonomous grass cutting robot will depend on its ability to meet the needs of its
intended users and provide a compelling value proposition in terms of cost, efficiency, and ease of use. With
continued innovation and refinement, these robots have the potential to revolutionize the way we maintain
lawns and landscapes, making it easier and more affordable for individuals and organizations to achieve their
lawn care goals
