Attack on Ghats
On 18 February 1858, the Indian freedom fighters carried out a major attack on the ghats located on the Ramganga river,
in the Farrukhabad district in Uttar Pradesh.
The attack on Ghats at Farrukhabad was one of the key events which occurred during the final stages of the First War of
Indian Independence. British records reveal that over two thousand soldiers had gathered at Fatehgarh on the Ghats of the
Ramganga River as part of a coordinated attempt by the revolutionaries to capture the major crossing points on the river,
and thus prevent the British troops and artillery from crossing over and attacking Lucknow. The records from this period
also highlight the intense military activity taking place during this period, as the revolutionaries not only maintained a
strong network of communication from Lucknow to as far as Bareilly, but were also constantly recruiting new men to fight
in the War. Nana Sahib was also involved in this coordinated attack, and was reported to have captured several boats at
Naubatganj.
