Title of the source: Magellan

Type of primary source: Music

Who is the author of the primary source? What do you know about the
author that may shape his/her pers perspective?

The man behind the famous music “Magellan” was the composer, singer and comedian
Ramon Tesorio Villam, or more popularly known as Yoyoy Villame. Yoyoy Villame was
a composer of music, most of it was about the history or the local happenings of our
country. That is now part of the education or taught to schools.

Who is the intended audience of the primary source?

The source was intended to all Filipino about the happenings during the visit of
Portugues explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Specifically, to the future generation, in order
for us to be knowledgeable about the historical event.

Where and when was the primary source published or created?

The music “Magellan” by Yoyoy Villame was compose or created at Bohol in the central
Philippines as a result of having fun singing and drinking with his fellow drivers. And
was released during the year of 1972.

Describe the historical context. What was happening during this event or
time period?

The song talks about the voyage of the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan within
our country, Philippines. Many things Magellan brought to our culture, one of this was
the religion Catholic. Many things they have taught to our ancestor that even today we
continuously use. The song highlighted also the historical fight between local chief Lapu
Lapu and Ferdinand Magellan and was later on called the famous “Battle of Mactan”.
