REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

As we go on with our everyday life with a great companion by our side,

more and more people are complaining about their dogs smell. This

chapter presents the related literature and studies both local from

foreign and local sources.

Foreign Literature

Dog's skin produces excessive sebum that makes the hair follicles

sweat causing an unpleasant smell. This is commonly seen in summer

than in winter. (The Halo pets, 2019)

According to Holidaybarn, allergies, hormonal imbalances, fungus,

parasites and localized inflammation can lead to an overgrowth of

yeast or bacteria on the skin and cause an unpleasant smell. Your

dog's discomfort will lead to excessive scratching and licking which

can cause a secondary bacterial infection. (2018).

Stephen White (2015) states about a skin disease called seborrhea

which causes keratinization (the outer layer of the skin constantly

keeps renewing) of the skin, claws, and hair follicles. It causes the

dog’s skin to be excessively greasy and oily, leading the dog to

smell. If dogs are not washed, cleaned, and dried, the excess sebum

causes a very musty odor in dogs.

Dog perfumes and colognes are basically just like the human versions,

but they’re specially designed so they won’t irritate your dog’s

sensitive skin. You can use them as a refresher in between baths or

after a bath to help your pup smell even better. (The Dodo, 2020)
Local Literature

Why do wet dogs smell terrible and what can you do about it? Your dog

has a lot of micro-organisms (yeast and bacteria) in its skin that

produce residues. When wet, these organic acids turn into an aerosol

when the water evaporates, creating the horrible wet dog smell that we

all know. (Dogs Vet, 2023)

Although it's not usually harmful, the smell of a wet dog can indicate

the number of bacteria and yeast present in your dog. If the amount of

microorganisms living in your dog starts to get out of balance, the

immune system can become overloaded and may have infection. (Dogs Vet,

2023)

According to Patnubay (2023) Sometimes a dog smells bad for reasons

more serious than just a bit of dirt and grime. Odors that are yeasty,

fishy, or otherwise foul can all be symptoms of an underlying health

problem. Not only can this spell trouble for your dog, but those

pervasive odors can be detrimental to your bond with your canine

companion, too. If your pup smells bad, don’t banish him to the dog

house.

Small amounts of baking soda are considered harmless to use around

dogs, but feeding it to them is not recommended. Baking soda can be

toxic to dogs if large quantities are ingested. 1 It's important to

understand how to use it properly and keep your dog safe. (Rivera,

2022)

In a study conducted by George Preti (2020), When your dog takes a

bath or goes for a swim, the water causes the release of stinky

compounds. “The water molecules have displaced the smaller volatile

compounds which are odoriferous,” explains George Preti, a scientist

and expert on body odor.
