Three booked
for abetting
friend’s suicide
Faridabad, May 22
The police have booked a
case of abetment to suicide
against three persons in con-
nection with the suicide of a
youth here. No arrest has
been made so far.
According to the police, the
victim identified as Gajender
(25) hailing from UP had been
employed in a factory here
for the past six months.
On May 20, he committed sui-
cide at his rented room in
Badoli village. The police recov-
ered a suicide note from the
spot, in which the victim had
alleged harassment by three
friends. It is alleged the accused
were not only robbing him of
his salary, but also snatched his
mobile recently. — TNS

construct stilt-plus-four-floor
buildings that are used as co-
living spaces, co-working
spaces, guest houses, hotels,
Airbnb rooms, gyms, banquet
halls, industrial kitchens,
playschools, billiard lounges,
salons, fitness clubs, offices,
designer studios and clinics.

With all this right in the
middle of residential sectors,
problems such as shrunk
parking spaces, erratic water
supply and electricity out-
ages have become the order
of the day. Pollution by gener-
ators installed by commercial
establishments is another
problem.
They say the unchecked
commercial activity is causing
a loss to the state exchequer.
According to several com-
plaints received by the Haryana
Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran and
the local Municipal Corpora-
tion, the problem is rampant in
Sectors 22, 23, 31, 38, 45, 46, 51,
52 and 56, Sushant Lok and
DLF Phase 1-5.
Mahesh Yadav (62), a resi-
dent of HSVP’s Sector 46,
says: “In spite of paying a
premium price for my apart-
ment, I am living a night-
mare. Every second building
has been converted into a
commercial establishment.
Parking space has shrunk
and power outages have
become common. Fumes and
garbage from industrial
kitchens are a nuisance. Res-
idents have complained to
the authorities several times,
but to no avail.”

In his complaint, Rajasthan
native Sachin said he and his
friend Manish were on their
way to Pahada village on a
two-wheeler when a van com-
ing from the opposite direc-
tion hit their vehicle.
“Five persons got out of the
van and thrashed us with
sticks. Two of my friends who
were accompanying me on
another two-wheeler fled as
soon as they saw the group of
five men with sticks,” the
complainant said.

matter. It seems to be a case of
personal enmity. The injured
persons have refused to recog-

In all, 20 industrial units, a
majority of them engaged in
dyeing work, have been
inspected and sealed in the
past two days in the city by
the Haryana State Pollution
Control Board (HSPCB) for
violating pollution norms.
The department has sealed
around 45 units since March.
A team, comprising officials
of the HSPCB, MC, police and
DHBVN, has sealed the units
operating in SGM Nagar,
Dheeraj Nagar Extension,
Panchsheel Colony, Udyog
Vihar, Kabul Patti, Surya
Vihar-Part 2 and Sector 91.
These units were functioning
without an STP, ETP and per-
mission from the HSPCB.
“These units had been dis-
charging chemicals into
drains, resulting in the
release of untreated waste dis-
charge into the Yamuna and
other water bodies in the dis-
trict,” an official said.
NOTICES TO 100 UNITS
About 100 more industrial
units have been issued
notices, sources in the
department of pollution con-
trol said. They have been
directed to furnish docu-
ments and NOCs, and take
measures regarding pollution
control within two weeks.
While notices had been
served, the closure was effect-
ed after the department failed
to get any response from the
offenders. As many units
were of “shifting” nature, the
authorities found their prem-
ises locked during inspection.
Though disconnection of
power and water supply of the
units is recommended, re-
connection in some cases has
also surfaced.
Violations came to light after
residents lodged complaints on
portals such as National Mis-

However, during the hear-
ing, the NBE did not dispute
that GST was not payable on
the course fee. The NBE also
acknowledged that its
demand from the candidates
to pay GST on the course fee
was “erroneous”.

The police have booked a
supervisor of a private school
for allegedly raping a former
sweeper of the same school.
The alleged incident took
place last year, but the woman
filed a complaint on Sunday.
An FIR has been registered
under Sections 376 and 506 of
the IPC.
According to the complaint
filed by the 45-year-old woman,
a native of Rewari, she left her
job a month ago because she
was getting threats. “On June 1
last year, Ramesh Kumar, a res-
ident of Wazirabad village,
raped me. He also threatened to
kill me and get me sacked if I
told anyone about the incident.
He continued to rape me for a
month and threaten me. Fed up
with his theats, I left the job and
approached the police,” the vic-

The district health authori-
ties in Rohtak, Mahendra-
garh and Sonepat districts
have swung into action after
the Chief Minister’s Office
(CMO) expressed displeasure
over the decline in the sex
ratio at birth (SRB) in the first
quarter of the current year.

geon, Sonepat, has asked the

Haryana Police on cyber crim-
inals in Nuh a “role model” for
crackdown, the MHA’s Indian
Cybercrime Coordination
Centre (I4C) has asked seven
vulnerable states to draw les-
sons and execute them. A
meeting-cum-interaction
regarding the hotspots of
cyber fraudsters in India was
hosted by the Centre, where
cops from Delhi, Uttarakhand,
West Bengal, Telangana, UP,
Jharkhand and Rajasthan
were asked to take a cue from
the Nuh police, which spear-
headed the biggest raid on
cybercrime in the NCR. The
Centre acknowledged the
immediate impact of the raid
that resulted in a drop in the
number of complaints.
Post the raid, conducted by
around 5,000 police personnel
in 14 villages in Nuh on April
27, wherein 125 cyber crimi-
nals were apprehended,

execute aspects of the raid
like detailed planning, includ-
ing deciding targets, recce of
targets discretely, mobilisi-
taion of resources and man-
power, use of technology,
briefing of force, interroga-
tion of criminals, detailed
technical examination of

linkage analysis, and the way
ahead to plug gaps in KYC of

grains this year as compared
to last season, as per the data
of the Haryana State Agri-
cultural Marketing Board.
The grain markets and pro-
curement centres have wit-
nessed an arrival of 74.90
lakh quintal of wheat, which
is 13.49 lakh quintal more
than last year when the dis-
trict had recorded 61.40 lakh
quintal of wheat.
This season, the state wit-
nessed heavy rainfall, strong
winds and hailstorm a couple
of weeks before and during
the harvesting, resulting in
the flattening of crop. Despite
the vagaries of weather, farm-
ers got a good yield and the
wheat arrival surpassed last
year’s arrival, said an official
of the marketing board.
The maximum arrival of
13.44 lakh quintal was wit-
nessed in the Assandh grain
market, followed by the Kar-
nal grain market, which
received 11.79 lakh quintal.

Police has arrested four shoot-
ers of the Lawrence Bishnoi
gang, said DGP Gaurav Yadav
on Monday.
They have been identified as
Mehfooz, alias Vishal Khan, of
Saidpura in Dera Bassi; Man-
jeet Singh, alias Guri, of Khedi
Gujran in Dera Bassi; Ankit of
Narainpur in Panchkula; and
Goldy of Kheri in Panchkula.

tridges have been recovered
from their possession.
Yadav said the shooters were
tasked with harming/attack-
ing their rival gang members.
He said all four were history-

This was revealed during
police investigation.
He and his four accomplices
Amrik Singh, Dharminder
Singh, Harjit Singh and fire-
cracker trader Sahib Singh
were produced in the local
court after the expiry of the
police remand today. They
were sent to judicial custody.

Cong ex-MLA remand
extended by two days

After the completion of a five-
day remand of former Con-
gress MLA Kushaldeep
Singh Dhillon in a dispropor-
tionate assets case, the Vigi-
lance Bureau (VB) on Mon-
day produced him before a
court and got two more days
of custodial remand.
Dhillon’s counsel opposed
this extension in the remand,
saying the VB had nothing
more to ask him as he had
already submitted all docu-
ments and proofs about his
assets and properties in the
last six months. However, the
VB claimed Dhillon was not
co-operating with them in the
investigation. While the VB
had demanded three more
days of remand, the court
allowed it for two days.
Sources in VB revealed that
during the investigation into
the assets of the former MLA
and in the alleged purchase of
over 40 acres of ‘benami’ land
by him at Mumara village of
the district, it was found that
some politically connected per-
sons bought the ‘benami’ land
at throwaway prices in the area.
In one such dealing, a land-
owner whose holding exceed-
ed the ceiling prescribed
under the agrarian reform
laws was holding land in the
name of ‘benami’ owners to
avoid land ceiling laws. This
person had become a victim of
politically connected persons,
who allegedly prevailed upon
the ‘benami’ owners to sell
the land to them. A ‘benami’
transaction or property is one
in which a person’s own name
is not used but the name of
another person or a fictitious
name is used instead.
One of the victims of this
scam, a woman of Mumara
village, has named six per-
sons whose names were used
by a political leader to pur-
chase her land from ‘benami’
owners. While the VB has
already named two of these
new ‘benami’ owners in the
FIR registered against
Dhillon, the woman demand-
ed that the VB book the other

default bail

The Punjab and Haryana High
Court today allowed the regu-
lar bail plea of Aam Aadmi Par-
ty (AAP) MLA Amit Rattan
Kotfatta in a corruption case.
He, along with another person,
was arrested in February this
year in a case registered under
the provisions of the Preven-
tion of Corruption Act at Vigi-
lance Bureau police station,
Bathinda range. The bail order
by Justice Raj Mohan Singh
was not yet available.
Appearing before Justice Raj
Mohan Singh’s Bench on the
petitioner’s behalf, senior advo-

among other things, submitted
that the requisite period of 60 days
for filing the challan/report under
Section 173 CrPC had expired on
April 17. The challan was filed
accordingly to prevent the peti-
tioner from availing the benefit

co-accused Rashim. The prose-

Despite RBI Governor
Shaktikanta Das on Mon-
day explained that Rs 2,000
notes would continue to be
legal tender, Punjab petrol
pumps, eateries, general
shops and other units have
chosen to stop accepting
these notes, causing incon-
venience to the public.
In Jalandhar, some petrol
stations were accepting Rs
2,000 notes only if the fuel
purchase amount is Rs
2,000 or higher. Notices stat-
ing this have been promi-
nently displayed at petrol
pumps. The notice further
stated that Rs 2,000 curren-
cy would not be accepted
for the purchase of fuel
worth Rs 50 or Rs 100.
Kavish Mehra, a resident,
said a worker at a petrol
pump near Guru Nanak
Mission Chowk pump,
Jalandhar, refused to accept
Rs 2,000 after he refilled
fuel of Rs 1,250 in his bike.
The worker pointed to the
notice and said they were
merely following the orders
of their manager.
Meanwhile, on being
asked about the notice,

Association, Punjab, clari-
fied that Rs 2,000 notes were
legal tender and refusing to
accept these was illegal. He
emphasised that no petrol
pump association or oil
company had officially com-
municated any such notice.
Similarly, numerous gener-
al shops, food outlets, bak-
eries and private offices have
stopped accepting Rs 2,000
notes. They are requesting
customers to pay either
through online modes or
with currencies other than
Rs 2,000 notes.

guarding without hindering
legitimate interactions. The
utilisation of drones has pre-
sented a new challenge to
national security, as crimi-
nal networks, drug smug-
gling syndicates and terror-
ist organisations exploit this
technology to perpetrate
their nefarious activities.
The increasing use of
drones by smuggling syndi-
cates and terrorist groups
along India’s western bor-
der has become a growing
training programmes,
deploying counter-drone
measures and upgrading
technical capabilities.
However, the threat con-
tinues to evolve, necessitat-
ing further steps to
strengthen border security.
Effective combat against
security threats requires
institutional mechanisms
for coordinating intelligence
gathering, sharing, and
coordination. Despite finan-
cial constraints and resist-
ance to change, the forces
are prepared to engage with
the latest technology and
military modernisation.
The India-Pakistan border
has long served as an illegal
corridor for smuggling nar-
cotic substances, counterfeit
currency, arms and ammu-
nition and various contra-
band items. Drug cartels
and criminal networks have
employed various methods,
such as using plastic pipes,
creating cavities in farming
vehicles and appliances, and
utilising drones, to infiltrate
the Indian territory.
Punjab has emerged as a
hub for smuggling activi-
ties, with multiple factors
contributing to the sustain-
ability of these illegal corri-
dors. Its proximity to the

in 2019 when Pakistan-
based drug cartels adopted a
pattern similar to the one in

August 2019, the menace
has only grown. Punjab has
emerged as the most active
among the three Indian
states and one union territo-
ry sharing a border with
Pakistan. However, J&K,
Rajasthan and Gujarat have
also witnessed an increase
in drone sightings, with the
trend expected to rise.
Smugglers, backed by Pak-
istan’s state actors, predom-
inantly use Chinese-made
drones, with the DJI Matrice
being the most popular, to
smuggle drugs, arms and
ammunition from Pakistan
into Indian territory.

employed new modus
operandi, such as shifting
their focus to other vulnera-
ble areas or utilising upgrad-
ed autonomous drones. As a
result, border security and
law enforcement agencies
transitioning from a tradi-
tional border security
approach to a new hybrid
border security model. This
model would involve
upgrading conventional
resources with counter-UAV
systems, incorporating tech-
nical training programmes,
and developing short-, mid-
and long-term capabilities.
Establishing a dedicated
platform for the innovation
of indigenous counter-drone
technologies and institution-
alising inter-agency coordi-
nation would also be vital.
Implementing these meas-
ures will require further
deliberation, collaboration
and financial support. Never-
theless, they will contribute
to safeguarding India’s bor-
ders from hostile drones.
With drone technology
becoming increasingly
affordable and accessible,
this threat is only expected to
expand, necessitating addi-
tional counter-measures.
Border-guarding forces
may draw lessons from
the policies implemented
by like-minded countries
and seek technological
partnerships with indige-
nous stakeholders to
effectively respond to this
growing menace.

the Punjab outfit since the

say that the team has quite
possibly contributed to one’s
above-normal blood pressure.
The major reason has been
the inconsistent approach by
the team management —
buying players at high
prices, but not backing them;
and not having a proper line-
up and too many changes. In
contrast, a well-managed
team like the CSK creates a
balanced first team at the
beginning of the season and
then sticks with it.

ing New Delhi, Punjab,
Haryana and Rajasthan, wit-
nessed heatwave conditions
on Monday with maximum
temperature climbing to 46
degree Celsius.
Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh was
the hottest in the country
with a maximum tempera-
ture of 46.5 degrees Celsius.
The Indian Meteorological
Department (IMD) said two
weather stations in New Del-
hi — Najafgarh and Sports
Complex — reported 46.2
degrees Celsius. In Punjab,
Patiala district sizzled at 45.2
degrees Celsius, making it
the hottest district in the
state. Haryana too witnessed
sweltering high tempera-
tures. Three districts — Sir-
sa, Hisar and Jind — record-
ed the maximum
temperature of 45.2 degrees
Celsius. The IMD said maxi-
mum temperatures were
around 3-4 degrees higher
than the normal.
It said Rajasthan’s Churu
district recorded a maximum
temperature of 45.7 degrees
Celsius on Monday. The IMD
has asked people to cover
their heads when out and
keep themselves hydrated.
