PDC ORAL II ……………………THE V-V RULE…………..……..

PROF STELLA

GUYS, PLEASE WORK ON THIS CHART FIRST:

EXPLAIN HOW THE [V-V rule] WORKS:

[V+V+] stands for [VOICED + VOICED]
WHEN WE ADD CONTRACTIONS AND SUFFIXES TO WORDS WHICH END WITH A
VOICED SOUND, THE NEW ADDITION (i.e., the contraction or suffix) MUST BE
VOICED TOO.

[V-V-] stands for [Voiceless + Voiceless ]

WHICH MEANS that when we add contractions and suffixes to words which end with
voiceless sound, the new addition must be voiceless too. OK.

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH FINAL SIBILANTS?

… IF YOU HAVE THIS SOUNDS BEFORE THE /S/ ENDING YOU

MUST PRONOUNCE THE ENDING /IZ/ GOOD! WHY? ADDING A
VOWEL TO HEAR THE ENDING, BECAUSE THEY SOUND ALL
too SIMILAR (THE SIBILANTS)to the suffix. YES, WELL DONE!

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH...

Final /t/ & /d/ in regular verb past inflections?

...We need to add a vowel /i/ because the final sound is too
similar to the inflection: /id/.

Ok. this is finished. Now we need to practise this thing!!!

Let’s go to the other chart!
