Orchestration Notes Sunshine On Leith was performed at Leeds Playhouse with the following band: Musical Director playing keyboards and percussion (tambourine, ankle bells, cajon used instead of piano stool) Guitar Steel String Acoustic, 12 String Acoustic, Electric, Lap Steel Bass Electric and Upright Drums we used V-Drums, as the player was onstage and visible Violin & Mandolin Viola Cello ‘At various moments, five members of the cast also played guitars. For the Shopping Trolley Ballet we had alto sax & trumpet, and for Life With You we had trumpet, alto and tenor sax. The Barman and Busker played guitars and accompanied themselves. If there are no onstage guitars available, it is recommended that a second guitar is added to the band. Hence the additional part available called “Onstage Guitar”. It is not a problem if you have no brass; the strings parts cover the same lines, but the parts for trumpet, alto sax and tenor sax are provided. The show felt midway between a gig and a theatre piece. All of the band were onstage, in costume, and often moved around so that the audience couldn't tell the difference between cast and band The keyboard lived in a piano-like shell on a small moveable truck. Scenes 15-17 were underscored by recorded background music, as if hearing a piper busking on Princes Street, kitsch recorded music on Jenners' shop floor, or muzak in the lift. The Barman improvised the football commentary, with a sound effect, behind which we were taken to The Persevere in Scene 18. Scenes 23-25 have no scene change music to warm or comfort the atmosphere. Scene 28 — In Waterstones we used Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” as piped muzak. This crescendoed for the scene change and then was left playing quietly on Hazel's portable radio on her cleaning trolley, which she switched off in the scene. Scenes 32-33, 34-35, 35-36, 36-39 ~ there is no music here, Enjoy!
