Information for Internationally Educated Applicants:

Evaluation of Academic Credentials
1. Minimum Academic Requirement for Registration

In Alberta, the minimum academic requirement to apply for registration, is a master’s degree in
psychology or a master’s degree with content substantially equivalent to a master’s degree
with a major in psychology.

2. Ethics and Standards Requirement

All applicants who have completed a graduate degree outside of Canada or the United States
will be required to complete an Ethics and Standards course which focuses on the Canadian
Psychological Association (CPA) or American Psychological Association (APA) Ethical
Guidelines.

3. Assessment of Academic Credentials by a Third-Party Assessment Agency

If your degree(s) are from a university outside Canada or the United States, you must first have
your degree(s) assessed to determine if they are comparable in academic level to degree(s)
from Canadian universities. This assessment must be arranged through one of the following two
agencies.

a. International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS)

A “Specialized Assessment” is required from IQAS. While the statement from IQAS will
indicate to CAP whether the academic credentials are comparable in academic level
to degrees granted by a Canadian university, CAP reserves the right to make a final
determination of the level and will evaluate, in accordance with CAP’s criteria for
evaluating academic credentials, whether the content of the degree(s) is primarily
psychological in nature.

b. World Education Services (WES) Canada

Attention: Documentation Center

Toronto, Ontario M5B 1J3

Telephone: 800-361-6106, Fax: 416-972-9004

A “Course-by-Course Evaluation” is required from WES. While the statement from WES will
indicate to CAP whether the academic credentials are comparable in academic level
to degrees granted by a Canadian university, CAP reserves the right to make a final
determination of the level and will evaluate, in accordance with CAP’s criteria for
evaluating academic credentials, whether the content of the degree(s) is primarily
psychological in nature.

4. Applying to CAP’s Credentials Evaluation Sub-Committee (CESC)

Once you have arranged for an IQAS or WES assessment, and you have arranged for university
transcripts to be mailed or emailed to CAP directly from the issuing university, you may proceed
to send in your application for an evaluation of your academic credentials. Please refer to the
CAP website for the application deadlines and meeting dates of the CESC. The following must
be received to process your application:

1) Application form submitted online through the MyCAP Login (completed in its entirety)
2) Corresponding fee (please refer to the Fee Schedule located on the CAP website)
3) Original IQAS or WES assessment (copies are not acceptable) - to be included with your
application form. WES assessment can be shared with CAP online via AccessWES.
4) Official transcripts or certified translated copies of your transcripts from all academic
institutions from which you are listing coursework on your application form (notarized
copies must be mailed to the CAP office, while original official transcripts must be mailed
or emailed directly from the academic institution to CAP)
5) Original IELTS results (if applicable), (copies are not acceptable) - to be mailed to the
CAP office.

If a university outside Canada or the United States is unable to send a transcript directly to CAP,
CAP may accept a certified copy of the transcript the university issued to the applicant. If the
transcript and official university documents are in a language other than English, the applicant
must arrange to have these documents translated by a certified translator.

5. English Language Proficiency Requirements

Internationally educated applicants are required to take an English language proficiency test
unless their highest degree was obtained in English OR they have a high school diploma or a
minimum of two years of undergraduate education (in any field) in English.

All other internationally educated applicants must take IELTS academic version prior to
application and achieve a minimum score of 7.0 in each component. Similar results on another
assessment tool deemed substantially equivalent by the Registrar may also be accepted.
