We just realized why this month is called May. It may
rain, it may snow, it may hail, it may be 90 degrees, it
may be 20 degrees, and it may be that pretty much all of
eastern Montana is in a flood watch warning.

Memorial Day program Monday
Who are the veterans in our cemetery that are
remembered on Memorial Day ? In Glasgow we mark
all Veterans graves. What era did they serve? At 9:00
Saturday morning, May 27th, the VFW and American
Legion will be placing American Flags on these graves.
If you would like to help, bring a screw driver. Your
help would be welcome.
There will be a Memorial Day Program at the VFW
parking lot behind our flags on May 29, 2023. There will
be chairs or bring your easy chairs. Dalton Sand, a 2022
Glasgow High School graduate and Naval Academy
Midshipman, will be our speaker. Everyone is welcome
and there will be pot luck afterwards in the VFW .

Why it is not “Happy” Memorial Day, but you should celebrate anyway!

Are you confused yet?
This time of year, we are all
inundated with advertisements on
TV or in our email, on social media,
or even in the stores that say “Happy
Memorial Day” or just promoting
Memorial Day sales. I get it, for
most it is a well-earned day off of
work. It often signals the beginning
of the summer beach season. And
yes, it is a long weekend with friends
and family spent by the pool or
BBQ’ing in the backyard. It is easy
to forget the true meaning behind
the holiday.
So, what is Memorial Day?
Memorial Day, formerly known
as Decoration Day, is the one day
a year our country sets aside to
recognize, remember and mourn
our U.S. servicemembers who
have died while serving our great
country. It is also a day to remember
our Gold Star Families, those who
have lost a servicemember on active
duty. This day can be especially hard
on our Gold Star Families and those
who have lost friends and family as
emotions are often a bit closer to the
top. For this reason, although I don’t
take offense, I always encourage
people to not say “Happy Memorial
Day.”
Think of it this way – would you
say “Happy funeral Day”? Hmm…
that sinks in a bit more, doesn’t it?
Given that we have an all-
volunteer force (as opposed to an
active draft), fewer and fewer people
have lost someone in the service or
even know someone who served
after the Vietnam era. Many do
not realize the extent we still have
soldiers in harm’s way, and each year
we continue to have families back
knock on the door to inform them
that their loved one has been lost. To
some, it seems as though Memorial
Day has become just another fun
holiday for which the meaning has
been lost. And to that I would say…
