Dear Mavis:
Please accept my heartiest congratulations on your recent selection for inclusion on the short-
list for the NY City Writers Prize.
I just heard the news today from Francis Goodspeed when she dropped into my office with the
marked up proofs for her latest collection of stories. As you can imagine, Fran was very excited
too!
I am so proud of you. As you know, I have been a longtime promoter of your work, and in my
mind it's about time they finally recognized your talent. In fact, I believe that your selection for
the NYCWP short-list is long overdue.
I have already read two of the other books that are short-listed and in my opinion they don't
hold a candle to your "No Turning Back". I will read the other three books nominated and let you
know what I think. Although, I could hardly be considered an objective reviewer on this one.
Once again Mavis, my sincere congratulations on your nomination. Just being nominated for
the NYCWP is an honor in itself. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you until they announce
the winner on March 1st.

Dear Friends:
As a number of you already know I have recently accepted a position with another
company and will be leaving at the end of this week. Please consider this to be my sincere
goodbye to each and every one of you.
I want you all to know that I am truly leaving here with mixed feelings; happy about my new
career opportunity but sad to be leaving such a great company where I have so many
wonderful friends and colleagues. The last three years as a member of the SysTek team was
the best period of my career so far. I learned a great deal and worked with many people
with whom I am sure I will remain friends for a long time. I can only wish that my new job
will give me such rewarding experiences and supportive friends.
Thank you so much for making my time at SysTek a truly enjoyable one. I invite any of you
who would like to keep in touch, to speak to me before I leave on Friday and I will be happy
to give you my new phone and e-mail co-ordinates.
My very best wishes for the future go out to each and every one of you.
Yours sincerely,
Jason Hurley

BANDUNG: Thousand of people who had fled from their houses located on the slopes of
smoldering Mount Gamkomora on Halmahera Island, North Maluku Province, could return
to their homes after authorities downgraded the volcano’s top-alert status Monday.
The head of the volcano logy Canter and Geology Disaster Mitigation Agency, Surono, said
that the returning residents still could not get in within three kilometers area of the volcano in
ibu district, West Halmahera regency.
The alert status for the volcano was downgraded because the volcano had shown less
volcanic activity. Since July 10 to July 15, only two small tectonic quakes measuring below
2 of the Richter scale were recorded in the mountain and the volcano did not burst out hot
lava or other volcanic material from its carter.
“Compared to the last Monday explosions wherein the ash spewed was 4.000 above the
creator, it is now only about ten meters high,” Surono told the journalists in Bandung on
Monday.
Following the volcanoes increasing activity last week, which led authorities to put in the top
alert status, around 10.000 residents in ibu district fled to safety. Most of the residents were
taking shelter in South Ibu and central Ibu districts.
Surono warned the people not to get close to the volcano because small emissions of smoke
could throw materials from volcanoes’ crater.
The 1,635 meter volcano has erupted 12 times since records have been kept. The last time
ash and smoke streamed out of the volcano was in 1987. No casualties were reported.

My Day at the Beach
(Orientation)
Last week my friend and I were bored after three weeks of holidays, so we rode our bikes to
Smith Beach, which is only five kilometres from where I live. When we arrived at the beach,
we were surprised to see there was hardly anyone there. After having a quick dip in the
ocean, which was really cold, we realized one reason there were not many people there. It
was also quite windy.
(Events)
After we bought some hot chips at the takeaway store nearby, we rode our bikes down the
beach for a while, on the hard, damp part of the sand. We had the wind behind us and, before
we knew it, we were many miles down the beach. Before we made the long trip back, we
decided to paddle our feet in the water for a while, and then sit down for a rest. While we
were sitting on the beach, just chatting, it suddenly dawned on us that all the way back, we
would be riding into the strong wind.
(Re-orientation)
When we finally made it back home, we were both totally exhausted! But we learned some
good lessons that day.

pengoperasian suatu benda, atau aturan permainan. Trus.. apa ada hubungan antara teks
procedure dengan teks explanation. Jawabnya pasti ada. Persamaannya yaitu keduanya
membahas tentang cara-cara membuat sesuatu. Perbedaannya teks procedure lebih simple.
Namun teks explanation lebih ilmiah.
Genre: Explanation
Social function: To explain the process involved in the formation or working of natural or
socio cultural phenomena.
Generic structure:
1. A general statement to position the reader
2. A sequenced explanation of why or how something occurs.
3. Closing
Language features:
Focus on generic, non-human participants.
Use mainly of general and abstract nouns, action verbs, simple present tense, passive voice,
conjunction of time and cause, noun phrases, complex sentences, and technical language
Contoh:
Bread
Almost everyone eats bread daily, especially for breakfast. Bread making is not a
complicated task. You must have an oven, water, sugar, salt, flour and yeast. The basic
ingredient is flour comes from wheat. There are two kinds of flour which is soft, and the hard
one.
Hard flour, made by Winter wheat, is better choice for making bread. Bread using hard flour
produces better texture and taste. Luke warm water is added to the flour to make dough.
Yeast is a microscopic organism, the size may not be impressive but it is capable of
producing carbon dioxide. It is also easy to use. Powered yeast needs only be dissolved in
water to be used instantly. Yeast works best in the presence of sugar and warmth.
Besides, encouraging yeast to grow quickly in the dough, sugar is added to give flour to the
bread. Salt is added for the same purpose, to make the bread taste nice. However, it has the
reverse effect on yeast, unlike sugar. The next ingredient is oil, olive oil, com oil, peanut oil
and butter. It is essential for making the bread tender. After mixing with all these ingredients,
the flour are hard beaten before sent to the oven.
Teks di atas berisi tentang proses pembuatan roti.

organism, the size may not be impressive but it is capable of producing carbon dioxide”
(dilihat dari kata-katanya, kesannya science banget kan..) Teks yang kedua ditulis dengan
menggunakan kalimat perintah atau instruksi. Contohnya pada kalimat “After you read the
recipe, put everything on the counter”.

This text is for questions 189 to 191:
Petroleum products, such as gasoline, kerosene, home heating oil, residual fuel oil and
lubricating oil, come from one source. Crude oil is found below the earth surface as well as
under large bodies of water, from of few hundred feet below the surface to as deep as 25,000
feet in to the earth interior. Crude oil is obtained by drilling a hole through the earth, but
sometimes more dry holes are drilled than those producing oil. Pressure at the source, or
pumping, forces the crude oil to the surface
Crude oil wells flow at varying rates from ten to thousands of barrels per hour. Petroleum
products vary grated in physical appearance; thick, transparent or opaque. Their chemical
compositions are made up of only two elements: carbon and hydrogen, which form
compounds called hydrocarbons. Other chemical elements found in the union with the
hydrocarbons are also found, but these are of such minute quantities that they are disregarded.
The various petroleum products are refined from the crude oil by heating and condensing
the vapors of crude oil. These products are called light oil such as gasoline, kerosene, and
distillate oil.
HORTATORY EXPOSITION

point of view by showing the information in the global way.
COMMUNICATIVE PURPOSE
To persuade the reader to agree with the writer

Analytical VS Hortatory Exposition
Dear students…..
Bingung cara membedakan teks analytical exposition dan hortatory exposition? Don’t worry
it’s so easy. Study the followings ya…
Sebelum kita mengetahui perbedaan teks analytical dan hortatory, mari kita mengenal
persamaan dari kedua teks ini. Teks exposition dibagi menjadi dua bagian yaitu analytical
exposition dan hortatory exposition. Exposition adalah jenis teks yang berisi tentang
argumen-argumen tentang suatu topik.
So the thesis is “Smoking is not good for your
health”. Kemudian kita akan memberikan alasan-alasan mengapa merokok itu tidak baik, so
we tell the arguments that support our thesis. The social function of exposition is to persuade
the reader or listener.
So the difference is…..
Study the text organization of analytical exposition below.
Ada 3 tahapan dalam teks analytical, yaitu:
1. Thesis, berisi tentang suatu pernyataan tentang permasalahan tertentu. Biasanya
diawali dengan kalimat I personally think, In my opinion, I believe, dll.
2. Arguments, berisi tentang alasan-alasan untuk medukung Thesis yang dikemukakan.
Diawali dengan kata, atau f rase First, Second, Furthermore, In addition, The last,
dll.
3. Reiteration, berisi tentang simpulan dari Thesis, dan Arguments yang dikemukakan.
Kata-kata yang digunakan biasanya In my conclusion, Based on the arguments
above, dll
Perbedaan Analytical Exposition dan Hortatory Exposition terletak di paragraf
terakhir. Dalam penulisan Hortatory juga ada 3 bagian, yaitu:
1. Thesis, berisi tentang suatu pernyataan tentang permasalahan tertentu. Biasanya
diawali dengan kalimat I personally think, In my opinion, I believe, dll.
2. Arguments, berisi tentang alasan-alasan untuk medukung Thesis yang dikemukakan.
Diawali dengan kata, atau f rase First, Second, Furthermore, In addition, The last,
dll.
3. Recommendation, berisi tentang saran dari penulis atas Thesis dan Arguments yang
dikemukakan. Biasanya ada kata-kata should, should not, ought to, ought not to,
dll.

Text 1
Smoking in restaurants
Smoking in restaurants is just not on. It must not be allowed because it is rude, harmful to
others and dangerous for the smokers.
Firstly, smoking in a restaurant is impolite. The smell of the smoke affects all people and can
turn them off their food. People pay to taste good food and not to be put off by foul smelling
smoke.
Another reason smoking should not be allowed in restaurant is the harm it can do to others.
Passive smoking that is breathing in smoke made by a smoker can lead to asthma attacks and
even cancer.
Finally, smoking is dangerous and a health risk to the smokers. Cigarettes cause heart and
lung disease and people should not smoke anywhere, not just in restaurants.
Therefore, smoking in restaurants is impolite, harmful to others and a health risk to the
smokers and should not be allowed in any restaurants.
Text 2
Is it important to know what your kids are watching? Of course yes. Television can expose
things you have tried to protect them from, especially violence, pornography, consumerism,
etc.
A study demonstrated that spending too much time on watching TV during the day or
bedtime often causes bedtime disruption, stress, and short of sleep duration.
Another research found that there is a significant relationship between the amount of time
spent for watching television during adolescence and early adulthood, and the possibility of
being aggressive.
Meanwhile, many studies have identified a relationship between kids who watch TV a lot and
being inactive and overweight.
Considering some facts mentioned above, protect your children with the following tips:
1. Limit television viewing to 1 – 2 hours each day
2. Do not allow your children to have a TV set in their bedrooms
3. Review the rating of TV shows that your children watch
4. Watch television with your children and discuss what is happening the show
Kedua teks di atas hampir sama, perbedaannya hanya ada di paragraf terakhir. Coba
perhatikan paragraf terakhir pada teks 1 yang hanya berisi simpulan tidak ada saran. Memang
ada kata “shouldn’t be allowed in the restaurants”, namun itu bukan saran melainkan
penguatan dari thesis. Perhatikan lagi thesisnya “It must be allowed because…” Bandingkan
dengan paragraf terakhir pada teks kedua yang berisi saran melalui empat tips yang harus
dilakukan to protect the children. Clear right?
There are many arguments in favor of a boarding school education. Nevertheless, the
boarding school is not always the best education institution for everyone.
At an early age interacting and communicating with people is very important for a child’s
personal life and can be especially helpful for his/her future. In a boarding school, shy
children can take advantage of interaction through communal activities. The boarding school
also offers a great variety of activities such as arts, sports, and music that allow children to
demonstrate and develop specialized skills in their free time.
Furthermore, the structured way of life and strict rules at the boarding school may helps
students to get used to a well ordered way of life. The manners and social skills will help
them to become more responsible and confident, and to develop their talents in leadership.
Professionally trained teachers and educators in the boarding school can offer excellent
education without the parents’ constant supervision.
In spite of these good points, it is not advisable to send a child to a boarding school if he/she
is a dependent learner. A boarding school usually demands that student learn independently.
In addition, the boarding school should not be seen as a measure to solve inappropriate
behavior or unsatisfactory study performance. Instead of improving, problematic children
may close off their relationship with their peers and teachers.
In conclusion although a boarding school may provide good education to many children, it is
not recommended for those who are strongly attached to their families. They may become
frustrated and socially isolated.
215. According to the writer, children in a boarding school can develop specialized skills
in…
a. Entrepreneurship
b. Community service
c. Reading
d. Drama
e. Music

Borne’s affection, the most eligible boyfriend at school.

“Mission: Impossible 2”
When I saw the original Brian de Palma “Mission: Impossible” in 1996, I found the plot
confusing but the action sequences thrilling – and I especially enjoyed the Prague locations
(because I know the city so well). In the case of “M:i 2”, there is very little plot, but – thanks
to director John Woo (“Broken Arrow” and “Face/Off”) - the action scenes are even more
explosive and even more visceral with some superb stunts and a pounding soundtrack. I could
have done without the repeated use of a particular prosthetics trick, but the thrilling final bike
chase sequence is vintage Woo and worth the admission price alone. This time round, we
have a very different Tom Cruise as Impossible Missions Force agent Ethan Hunt: he looks
different, with his long hair flaying all over the place; he fights differently, displaying flying
drop kicks at every opportunity; and he feels differently, almost immediately falling in love.
Cruise can act, as we know from “Magnolia”, but here his thespian talents are not really
needed. However, the guy did do virtually all his own stunts and he was co-producer, so I
suppose he deserves his rumoured 30% share of the profits. I would like to have seen half
British half Zimbabwean Thandie Newton (“Beloved”), as both the agent and the villain’s
love interest, given a more physically resourceful role and the great Anthony Hopkins is
sadly underused – although he does have the best lines – as the head of the IMF. At least the
Scottish Dougray Scott is suitably chilling as the renegade with an original use for his cigar
cutter. The critics have been pretty cynical about this movie – “More Tom foolery with Mr
Cruise” and “Cruising on empty” were just two of the British headlines – but, when I saw the
film on its opening weekend at the largest cinema in London (the Empire Leicester Square),
every performance that evening was sold out and, at the end of my showing, the audience
actually applauded. Sure, it’s a triumph of style over performance – but what style. And, if
you’ve had a tough week at work (as I had), it’s a terrific antidote.
236. What makes “Mission Impossible 2” more interesting than the first?
A. The action is more explosive.
B. The place is so amazing.
C. The changing of the actor.
D. The difference stuntman.
E. The tickets were sold out.
“The little Old Lady who was Not Afraid of Anything” by Linda Williams is a great
Halloween story, although it doesn’t have the word “Halloween” anywhere in the texts. A
brave old lady walks home through a dark forest. She comes across two big shoes, a pair of
pants, a shirt, two gloves and a hat. Each time, the little old lady tells them she is not afraid of
anything. Then, after a scary orange pumpkin head appears, the old lady runs all way at
home. Once at time, she overcomes her fear and finds a happy solution. The items that have
tried to scare her become a scarecrow in the little old ladies garden. The picture book makes
good use of attention-grabbing sound words, such as “clomp, clomp”, “shake, shake”, and
“clap, clap”. Megan Lodi’s lively and detailed illustrations show the old lady’s emotions and
complement the story well. It is a good picture book for reading aloud to children in
preschool, kindergarten and first grade.

During the twentieth century the world has witnessed the inventions of many
amazing things. Television is a great invention, but there are arguments for and against
whether it is the best invention of the twentieth century
Television was invented in the1920s and first came to Australia in 1956. It has
played an important role in communicating news. We can learn instantly about what is
happening in the world because of television. Also, television has provided people with
entertainment in their own homes. People in isolated areas can still feel the other part of the
world because of television. For these reasons I feel that television could be considered the
best invention of the twentieth century.
On the other hand, there are other inventions that could be considered better than
television. Some might argue that computer should be awarded the distinction of being the
best invention because computer has made life easier. Others might argue that medical
inventions such as heart pacemakers are best inventions because they help to save live.
It can be seen that there are reasons for and against television being considered the
best invention of the twentieth century. After looking at both sides I still believe it is the best
invention.
267. What does the text mainly discuss?
a. The role of television in communicating news
b. The positive and negative impacts of television
c. The best invention of the twentieth century
d. Television is the invention of the twentieth century
e. An argument whether television is the best invention of the twentieth century.
268. “Some might argue that computer should be ….” (Paragraph 3)
The word some refers to …..
A. televisions
B. computers
C. entertaining
D. inventions
E. reasons
269. We can learn instantly about ….
a. with ease d. without delay
b. rather lately e. without doubt
c. very simply
Death penalty
Death penalty for serious criminals has been discussed by our experts. Those who agree say
that death penalty will scare the criminals off. However, those who disagree say that it is
inhuman not effective and we can not correct the wrong sentence after the criminals die.
In Switzerland, this penalty does not exist. Most people argue that the possibility of making
the wrong decision is always there although it is true that spending life behind the bars is not
easy either. Also every person should have a chance for rehabilitation. In this way he or she
can start all over again in another life style.
Those argue that there is no use to feed the terrorists in prison with their money. When they
get out, they will create a lot of troubles by blackmailing and killing people. So, who says
that jails will stop them from being guys?
My own opinion is divided. On the one hand, I want to be humane, and on the other hand, I
wonder if those people are worthy of feeling.
An elephant is the largest and strongest animals. It is a strange looking animal with its thick
legs, huge sides and backs, large hanging ears, a small tall, little eyes, long white tusks and
above all it has a long noise, the trunk. The trunk is the elephant’s peculiar feature, and it has
various uses. The elephant draws up water by its trunk and can squirt it all over its body like a
shower bath. It can also lift leaves and puts them into its mouth. In fact the trunk serves the
elephant as a long am and hand. An elephant looks very clumsy and heavy and yet it can
move very quickly. The elephant is a very intelligent animal. Its intelligence combined with
its great strength makes it a very useful servant to man and it can be trained to serve in
various ways such as carry heavy loads, hunt for tigers and even fight.
For many years, people have believed that the animal after man were the
chimpanzees. Now however, there is proof that dolphins may be even cleverer than these big
apes.
Although a dolphin lives in the se, it is not a fish. It is a mammal .It is in many ways,
there fore like a human being.
Dolphins have a simple language. They are able to talk to one another. It may be
possible for men to learn how to talk to dolphin. But this will not be easy because dolphin
can not hear the kind of sound man can make. If man wants to talk to dolphins, therefore, he
will have to make a third language which both he and the dolphins can understand.
Dolphins are also very friendly toward man. They often follow ships. There are
many stories about dolphins guiding ships through difficult and dangerous waters.
Once upon a time there lived as neighbours, a bear and a rabbit. The rabbit was a
good shot, and the bear, being very clumsy, could not use the arrow to good advantage. The
bear would call over the rabbit and asked the rabbit to take his bow and arrows and came with
the bear to the other side of the hill. The rabbit, fearing to arouse the bear’s anger by refusing,
consented and went with the bear and shot enough buffalo to satisfy the hungry family.
Indeed, he shot and killed so many that there was lots of meat left after the bear and his
family had loaded themselves, and packed all they could carry home. The bear was very
gluttonous and did not want the rabbit to get any of the meat, so the poor rabbit could not
even taste the blood from the butchering, as the bear would throw earth on the blood and dry
it up. Poor rabbit would have to go home hungry after his hard day’s work. The bear was the
father of five children. The youngest child was very kind to the rabbit. The mother bear,
knowing that her youngest child was a very keen-eater, always gave him an extra large piece
of meat, but the youngest child didn’t eat. He would take it outside with him and pretend to
play ball with it, kicking it toward the rabbit’s house, and when he got close to the door he
would give the meat with such a great kick, that it would fly into the rabbit’s house and in
this way the poor rabbit would get his meat unknown to the papa bear.
300. The poor rabbit didn’t taste any of the meat because …
A. they are already given to the butcher
B. they are eaten by the youngest bear
C. the bear carried all the meat home
D. they are already dried up
E. the bear ate all the meat
301. Which statement is NOT TRUE according to the text?
A. The papa bear was not very kind to the rabbit.
B. The rabbit got nothing from his shooting.
C. The mother bear always gives her youngest extra meat.
D. The papa bear didn’t like giving the rabbit some meat.
E. The papa bear knew that his youngest child gave the rabbit some meat.
302. The story teaches us that …
A. poverty makes people suffer
B. we must keep our promise
C. being greedy makes other people happy
D. people should love each other
E. we must keep our relationship with others
Once upon a time rabbit wanted to cross a river but he cold not swim. He had an idea He saw
a boss of crocodile swimming in the river. The rabbit asked the boss of crocodile. “How
many crocodile are there in the river?” “Where are they? The rabbit asked for the second
time.
