DPI 280 Series User Manual 1-1
1 Introduction
The Druck DPI 280 Series of smart digital process indicators
measure and display voltage, current and resistance from
external devices, including pressure transducers. The DPI 284
and 285 instruments contain integral pressure transducers.
Four keys, on the front panel, allow the user access to two
alarms and two further functions as configured in the
instrument set-up. A 15-way terminal block on the rear of the
instrument provides connections for the power supply, various
external devices such as transducers, transmitters,
temperature sensors and other externally produced signals.
The microprocessor controlled circuits automatically adjust to
the external signals. The DPI 284 and 285 instruments have a 9-
way terminal block on the rear panel providing connections for
the power supply and two alarm functions.

A range of plug-in, retrofitted digital communications and

analogue output options are available. The power supply can
be 90 to 132 V a.c., 200 to 264 V a.c. 47-70 Hz and 10 to 40 V

5.2 Connecting a New Device
Before connecting any new device find out the cable
identification, the polarity and the type of output. Further
information is required for setting-up the instrument: type and
range of input, output range, units and the scale. The following
diagrams are examples of methods for the connection and
measurement of various devices. The DPI 280/1 instrument
only measures Voltage; the DPI 282/3 measures Voltage,
current and the output of temperature sensing devices.

Set-up Menu
The following description is structured in the same way as the
set-up menu.
Notes
o For correct instrument set-up, the display and input
should be set in sequence. The parameters are set in
two sub-menus. The display format should be set first
and then the calibration (input) parameters entered. This
makes sure the settings of set-points, scaling and input
units are displayed in the correct format.
o When enabled, the password, a numeric value (not zero),
allows access to the set-up menu.
InPUt
This menu contains the master settings of the instrument.
Important note
Changing these settings for the DPI 284/285 could
invalidate the instrument's calibration. The input settings
are set at manufacture and should not need further
adjustments except zero and span corrections, see section
3-1. A PIN number of 1234 (set at manufacture) protects
the calibration settings.

DPI 280/281
Note:
The DPI 280/281 and 282/283 contain different InPUt
menus.
The input configuration and operating mode is selected through
five sub-menus:

CN BY
This sub-menu adjusts the resolution of the last digit when the
input signal stability is lower than the instrument resolution.
When the by 2 resolution is selected the display shows only 0-
2-4-6-8 on the last digit, The choices are:
by 1 Normal operation of display
by 2 Last digit shows only 0-2-4-6-8
by 5 Last digit shows only 0-5
by 10 Last digit shows always 0
LSt O
When a digital representation of the input exceeds the display
full-scale of 20999 counts, a dummy zero can be added at the
right of the display. The representation will range up to 99990,
giving a resolution of 10000 count. Selections are:
19999 Normal display operation
99990 Reading shifted left and last digit shows 0

LStbk
When a digital representation of the input, lower than 2000
count is required, with high stability, the last digit may be
blanked. The calibration is performed at the full instrument
capability (20000 count) but the display shows the reading with
the last digit blanked up to 2000 counts. The two selections
are:
19999 Normal operation
1999 Last digit blanked

OVEr
When an input limit is required, this function sets the upper
limit. As soon as the input exceeds the upper limit the display
flashes. The upper limit may be set over the full reading range.

UndEr
This function sets a lower limit for the input. When the input
becomes lower than the limit, the display flashes. The lower
limit may be set over the full reading range.

6-6
AdC
Three parameters affecting the analogue to digital convertor
performance can be changed:
t Cnv Conversion time
n AVG Number of averaged readings
t AVG Average reading limit
t Cnv
The time for updating the display reading in 0.1 sec intervals
from 0.1 up to 20 sec.
n AVG
Selects the number of readings (1 to 25), in a window, from the
A/D convertor to be averaged. This is a continuous averaging
function updating at every reading.

t AVG
Sets the limit of the averaged reading value (from 0 up to 20999
counts); this is a ±limit set on the average value (e.g. if the
average value is 1000 and the limit is 50 any value between
950 and 1050 is accepted).
The average AVG is the displayed reading only if each reading is
within the ± limit tAVG. If one reading in the nAVG is greater
than the limit set (tAVG) the reading is displayed and the
averaged reading value is ignored.

DPI 280 Series User Manual 6-7
CS Lin
The custom linearization function is used when the input signal
is related to the output by a non-linear function, such as
differential flow/pressure or EMF to temperature. It permits, in
set-up, up to sixteen segments that convert an input (in display
units) to a reading. Up to seventeen points are defined with an
IN value (actual measurement) and an OU value (reading the
instrument must show). The function corrects intermediate
inputs with linear interpolation between the segment end
points. The position of points is only limited by the display
format (e.g. fully horizontal or vertical segments may be
defined); an input cannot have two output values. At least two
points (two In and two OU) are required by the function, it is
not necessary to set the points out of the active reading range
(it is recommended to set two extra segments in the negative
and positive over-flow area):
Note:
The custom linearization accepts both vertical and horizontal
segments. The display operates in a slow way if a misaligned
segment is entered. Make sure each segment is aligned.
FUn Selects linearization:
OFF Function disabled
On Function enabled
POInt End-point values of the segments, all of the seventeen
values have an input (what the instrument reads) and output
(what the user wants to read) as follows:
In x Input value of point x
OU x Output value of point x

FUnC
The menu has two selections:
kEyb Keyboard operating mode
EInP External inputs operating mode
kEyb
The keyboard may be configured for different functions (AL1 and
AL2 are always alarm #1 and #2), the F1 and F2 keys can be
changed as follows:
A3 A4 F1 = alarm #3 F2 = alarm #4
A3 SCF1 = alarm #3 F2 = second scale
A3 At F1 = alarm #3 F2 = auto tare
A3 Pk F1 = alarm #3 F2 = peak #1

Pk SC F1 = peak #1 F2 = second scale
Pk At F1 = peak #1 F2 = auto-tare
SC At F1 = second scale F2 = auto-tare
Gn At F1 = Gross/Nett F2 = auto-tare
Alarm
F1 or F2 operate in the same way as keys AL1 and AL2.
Scale
The scale function operates as a dual-position switch,
switching between two scales, when the secondary scale
operates the LED above the key lights.
Peak
A key pressed for less than 2.5 seconds switches
between the reading and the peak. A key pressed for
more than 2.5 sec the display shows the peak reading and
then clears the peak value. When the display shows a
peak value the corresponding LED lit.
Gross/nett
When key F1 operates as Gross/Nett control it switches
between the gross and nett values, when the display
shows the nett value the corresponding LED lit.
Auto-tare
The auto-tare function resets the display, taring off the
current value when the appropriate key is pressed. When
the key is pressed the tare value is updated and the
display reset. If the key is pressed the output of alarm #4
becomes active for 50 milliseconds.
At power-up the display shows the input (all LED off) except for
the gross/nett function that first operates showing the nett
value with the LED lit.

DPI 280 Series User Manual 6-9
EInP
The DPI 280 series of instruments can be configured to receive
three external inputs and operate functions normally controlled
by the keyboard. Connection of an external input is made on
connector J05 (see internal view, section 5). The codes are:
EIn 1 External input # 1
EIn 2 External input # 2
EIn 3 External input # 3
Using external inputs does not limit the keyboard operation.
Each input affects instrument operation on high-to-low
transition only (contact closed with Gnd), except the hold
function (available on input #1 only) which is static and freezes
the display and related variables when low. The code structure
is shown in the following table:

External Input Codes

Add a value of ... To activate ...

1 AUTO TARE
2 PEAK #1 RESET
4 PEAK #2 RESET
8 ALARMS RESET
16 FORCE DISPLAY INPUT (GROSS)
32 FORCE DISPLAY NET
64 FORCE DISPLAY AUTO TARE
128 FORCE DISPLAY PEAK #1
256 FORCE DISPLAY PEAK #2
512 SECOND SCALE ON
1024 SECOND SCALE OFF
2048 CUSTOM LINEARIZATION ON
4096 CUSTOM LINEARIZATION OFF
8192 HOLD INPUT #1 ONLY

Each input can operate more than one function at time: setting
the correct code as a sum of individual codes any input may be
programmed for more functions (e.g. to use ext. input #1 to:
reset peak #1, reset peak #2, reset alarms, set EIn 1 = 2+4+8
or 14).

ALr 1/2/3/4
The DPI 280, DPI 282 and DPI 284 instruments have four alarm
functions each with open collector outputs. The DPI 281, DPI
283 and DPI 285 instruments have two alarm functions, the
same as the DPI 280, DPI 282 and DPI 284, with Volt-free relay
outputs. The alarms can operate either as independent or
master-slave trip-points. Each alarm has a set of configuration
parameters:
tyPE Operating mode
rELAy Relay phase
OndLy On delay
OFdLy Off delay
HySt Hysteresis
LAtCh Latching mode
SP Lk Set-point locking
SOUrC Set-point source
tyPE Defines the operation logic for the alarm.
OFF
Alarm not operating.
AL Hi
Alarm high - the input value is higher than the set-point.
AL Lo
Alarm low - the input value is lower than the set-point.
ALSLO
Alarm low with security - same as alarm low, disabled at power-
on and enabled when the input exceeds the set-point (avoiding
a ‘cold trip’ at power-on).
C rEV
Reverse On/Off controller the output reverses control (i.e.,
comes ON when the reading is high - cooling controller).
C dir
Direct On/Off controller the output acts as direct control (i.e.,
comes ON when the reading is low - heating controller).
dE HI (not alarm 1)
Deviation high alarm - input value higher than the algebraic sum
of the alarm value and alarm 1 value (both +ve and -ve settings
allowed).
dE LO (not alarm 1)
Deviation low alarm - input value lower than the algebraic sum
of the alarm value and alarm 1 value (both +ve and -ve settings
allowed).

K148 Issue No. 5

DPI 280 Series User Manual 6-11
Example: Alarm High function with a set-point of 1000 and a
hysteresis of 100. Activates the alarm with an input of 1001
and releases the alarm with an input of 900. A controller
function switches on at 1100 and off at 900 giving ±100 counts
around the set-point.
/ Function De Hi & De Lo are implemented only on alarms
2, 3 & 4.

/ In all cases a hysteresis dead band is located in the

opposite side of the operation except for the controller
function (C dir, C rev) where a double dead band is
used to ‘centre’ the On/Off operation.

rELAy Defines the output status with respect to the off

condition and set as:
no Normally Open - output inactive with alarm
inactive.
nC Normally Closed - output active with alarm
inactive.
OndLy Minimum time the alarm condition must remain
active for alarm function validation (setting from 0 to 100 sec in
0.1 second steps regardless of the conversion speed).
OFdLy Minimum time the alarm condition must remain
inactive for alarm releasevalidation (setting from 0 to 100 sec in
0.1 second steps regardless of the conversion speed).
HySt The `dead zone' between on and off alarm switching.
Example: A hysteresis setting of 100 counts with a set-point
of 1000. Alarm high function activates the alarm condition
when the input exceeds 1000 and restores normal operation
when the input falls below 900.

K148 Issue No. 5

6-12
LAtCH Defines the alarm resetting mode and may be set as:
OFF Alarm automatically switches off when the alarm
disable condition is met.
rESEt Output immediately switches off with key
activation, but internal status remains on until the
alarm condition is valid.
FAILS Output switches off only when both alarm
conditions are removed and the key is activated (if
the key is activated before the alarm off condition
the alarm `latches’ until the alarm off condition is
reached).
SP Lk Enables the alarm set-point change function to be
locked, there are two settings:
UnLOC Set-point change by keyboard enabled.
LOCk Set-point change by keyboard is disabled.

SOUrC Defines the internal variable driving the corresponding

alarm channel and may be set as:
GrOSS Alarm on input (gross)
nEt Alarm on nett
PEAk1 Alarm on peak # 1
PEAk2 Alarm on peak # 2
Alarms are fully independent except for the De Hi and De Lo
functions, that are related to alarm 1. These function are
especially suited for interdependent alarm setting:

Example 1: Set a ‘window’ for acceptance of a value.

o Use alarm #1 as the centre-point and set Alarm #2 & #3
to the two band limits lower and higher and finally
connect outputs #2 and #3 in parallel.

Example 2: Speed reduction alarm for a filling machine

operating at full-power.
o Set a deviation alarm to activate a flow rate reduction
when the level approaches the set-point to avoid the
exceeding of the filling level due to the valve operating
delay.
o The operation speed of any alarm control is equal to the
maximum conversion speed (10 conversion/sec or 100
millisecond) in any case, so the alarm action may be
faster or slower than the display update and is controlled
in dynamic by the On and Off delay.

K148 Issue No. 5

DPI 280 Series User Manual 6-13
PEAk 12
Two independent peak detectors are in the instrument, each
detector has a set of configuration parameters:
FUn Operating Function
dLy Capture Delay
SOUrC Peak Source
These affect the operation of the two detector as follows:
FUn 1 - FUn 2
If the capture is enabled a new maximum or minimum may be
set:
Pk HI New values are stored in memory if higher
than previous value.
Pk LO New values are stored in memory if lower
than previous value.

dLy
Defines the time the peak must be higher (or lower) than the
last stored value to trigger the detector.

The operating function sets the logic used by the two detectors,
the capture delay sets an interval to validate the peak capture.
This function can be set to the dynamics of a system; fast
peaks like a peak current derived by the start-up of an electric
motor can be ‘skipped’ by increasing the delay time so that the
peak of the mean energy consumption is captured instead of
the instantaneous peak.
SOUrC
Selects the following commands:
GrOSS Gross
nEt Nett
nEtrS Net that automatically resets peak #1 and #2 when
auto-zero command operates.

6-14
SCALE
This function changes the reading unit of the display the
instrument automatically calculates the conversion formula.
The format on the display may also be different on the second
scale to meet the requirement of the secondary engineering
unit. Controls for this function are:
In1 - OU1
In 1 is the value of the main scale that the secondary scale
must display the value Ou 1.
In2 - OU2
In 2 is the value of the main scale that the secondary scale
must display the value Ou 2.
dECPO
This function sets the decimal point position of the secondary
scale:
19999
1.9999
19.999
199.99
1999.9
Cn by
Sets the resolution of the last digit and can be used when the
display reading flickers due to the low stability of the input.
When the by 5 resolution is selected the display shows only 0-5
on the last digit, similar operation is obtained with the other
selections:
by 1 Normal operation of display

SEtHI
Defines the reading (or input value for a non-linear input)
corresponding to the highest calibration point of the
output and can be set between -19999 and 20999
counts. The calibration of the analogue output is
achieved by entering two values of the output and the
corresponding display readings.
Example:
Output of 4 to 20 mA with a 100 °C to 400 °C span. Enter 4.00
as analogue low, 20.000 as analogue high, 100 as display low
and 400 as display high. The output may be operated in
reverse configuration (e.g. output decreasing - input increasing)
setting these two points determines the calibration.
The non-linear operating mode is useful for computer or PLC
connections where it is not possible to bypass the host
linearization function. The analogue output board is factory pre-
calibrated to guarantee error-free, field updating of the
instrument.

7 Calibration
General
A calibration check should be carried out at chosen intervals.
To stay accurate the instrument should be checked at a
recommended period of 12 months. If necessary, a calibration
adjustment should be carried out.

7.1 Accuracy Settings

In normal operation, two types of input/display settings can be
made for specific applications:
i. Entering the low and high values from a calibrated device
connected to the instrument.
ii. Adjusting the instrument to display actual readings from
the device (integral or external).
InPUt sub-menu
Setting the input high and low values of the device connected
to the instrument and, at the same time, setting the display
high and low values. The display values are the calibration zero
and span values from the device connected to the instrument.

All DPI 280 Series instruments have an input sub-menu with

the DPI 282/283 containing an additional sub-menu for voltage
and temperature sensors.

Zero and Span Adjustment

Should the device output change for an applied value a
calibration adjustment can be made using the zero/span
adjustment method. This method produces offsets to the input
values. The DPI 280/281/284/285 contain a selection in the
InPUt sub-menu of ACAL (auto calibration). This facility also
produces offsets to the input values.
7.2 Calibration Check
The readings of the instrument should be compared with a
standard and, after any adjustments for accuracy (traced to
National Standards), the differences recorded. The adjusted
differences can then be compared with the required accuracy
for the instrument. If necessary, a calibration adjustment
should be carried out.

K148 Issue No. 5

7-2
7.3 Calibration Adjustment
The three methods of calibration adjustment are as follows:

/ Automatic calibration 280/281/284/285.

/ Input menu 280/281/284/285 [mA], 282/283 [mA, mV, V].
/ Zero and span adjustment 280/281/282/283/284*/285*.
* Used for calibrating the integral Druck transducer or for
calibrating externally connected transducers (higher
pressures).

, The following procedures should be carried out in a

controlled environment by qualified technicians.

, A qualified technician must have the necessary technical

knowledge, documentation, calibration equipment to
carry out the required work to calibrate this instrument.
, The manufacturer can provide a comprehensive
calibration service including UKAS accreditation.

DPI 280/281/284/285 Automatic Calibration

This calibration method does not need calibration instruments
or sensor data (usually a load cell [280/281] or integral
transducer [284/285]). The instrument must be switched on,
connected to the sensor and allowed to thermally stabilise
(warm-up).
This calibration procedure requires a single, known weight or
pressure as the calibration reference. The instrument
calculates (extrapolates) from the zero (Unload) through the
calibration reference point to the full-scale point in a straight
line.
This method removes the dead-weight from the weighing
system or the zero offset from a pressure measuring system.

StArt
Enter StArt to start the calibration cycle. Press F2
/ The display alternately shows the reading and UnLd
(unload), remove or adjust the load on the sensor to zero
point. When the reading is stable press F2.
/ The display now alternately shows the reading and
LOAd (load), apply the calibrated weight to the sensor for
the calibration point. When the reading is stable press
F2.
/ After a reset cycle the instrument alternately shows the
reading and UnLd. Remove the calibrated weight from
the sensor. Adjust the load so that it is at the zero point.
When the reading is stable press F2.
The calibration cycle is completed and calibration data,
automatically computed by the instrument. The calibration data
is written into the parameters: InPLO, InPHI, dSPLO, dSPHI

7-4
LOCk function
After calibration of the instrument it is important to protect
against unauthorized changes to the calibration settings. This
LOCk selection in the SPEC sub-menu disables access to the
calibration parameters and prevents access to InPUt, dISDL,
CSLIn and AnOUt menus.
OFF Calibration enabled
ON Calibration disabled
The LOCk function automatically activates an unchangeable
security code. At every instrument power-up the code will be
displayed as C nnn, where nnn is the security code. Every time
this function is enabled/disabled the code is automatically
incremented by one, starting from 000 to 255 (there is no way
to change this code). This function is the equivalent of a
security mark and can be reported on the calibration certificate.

Input Settings
280/281/284/285 [mA], 282/283 [mA, mV, V]
This method requires accurate calibration details of the device
connected to the rear panel connector to be entered and stored
in the instrument.
Example
4 mA to 20 mA device with calibration values (from the
device’s calibration certificate) of 3.98 mA and 19.95 mA.
Select Set-up and enter the InPUt sub-menu and then IdC for
DPI 282/283.
Set:
InPLO 3.98
InpHI 19.95
dSPLO 00.00
dSPHI 20.00
The instrument shows 00.00 mA for an input from the device of
3.98 mA; the instrument corrects the input through the range
up to 19.95 displayed as 20.00 mA.
