Utilization of Aloe Vera for Dyeing Fabrics

I.I. Introduction

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in developing natural and sustainable alternatives
for dyeing fabrics. Aloe vera is a plant that has been used for centuries for various medicinal and
cosmetic purposes, but its potential as a natural dye has not been extensively explored. Aloe vera is
a succulent plant that is known for its gel-like substance, which is used in skincare and medicinal
products. Recent studies have shown that aloe vera contains natural pigments that can be used as a
dye for fabrics. Aloe vera is a sustainable and renewable resource that can be grown in many parts
of the world, making it an attractive alternative to synthetic dyes. The potential benefits of using
aloe vera as a natural dye are significant. By replacing synthetic dyes with aloe vera, textile
manufacturers can reduce their environmental impact and improve the health and safety of workers
on the textile industry.

I.II. Background of the Study

Aloe barbadensis Miller (AV) leaves consist of two layers, a hard green outer rind including the
vascular bundle and an inner jelly-like colorless parenchyma known as ‘AV gel’. AV leaves contain
polysaccharides in the parenchyma cells, which the plant uses for its energy. The gel consists of
about 99–99.5% water, with the remaining 0.5–1% of solid material containing a range of
compounds along with polysaccharides, including carbohydrate, amino acids, minerals, enzymes,
phenolic compounds, and organic acids, but polysaccharides make up most of the dry matter of the
AV parenchyma and hence the inner gel.(Seraj, Haque, 15 (2017) 1119) The current aim is to develop
environment-friendly and sustainable technologies for the production of goods, making it possible
for future generations to inherit a clean and safe world.( Kuopio 67 (2008) 241).

Today, dyeing is a complex, specialized science. Nearly all dyestuffs are now produced from synthetic
compounds. This means that costs have been greatly reduced and certain application and wear
characteristics have been greatly enhanced. But many practitioners of the craft of natural dyeing
maintain that natural dyes have a far superior aesthetic quality which is much more pleasing to the
eye. On the other hand, many commercial practitioners feel that natural dyes are non-viable on
grounds of both quality and economics. ( Srivastava And Singh, 16 (2011) 172). Aloe gel is widely
used for various applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries, but remaining
skins are discharge into the environment without any use. In this research work. Dyes are applied in
two methods like as Aloe Veras Skin Dry dyes (AVSD) and Aloe Veras Skin Solution dyes (AVSS ).
(Eshun and He, 44 (2004) 91).

This research intends to study the possibility of using Aloe Vera for the purpose of dyeing fabrics.
Aloe Vera plant (AV) may be used as, an alternative to clear to slightly yellow/translucent gold dye.
Due to the fact that the effects of color fastness to rubbing, wash and light on silk. Researchers have
the opportunity to introduce natural dyes as an alternative to the synthetic dyes known to pose
health hazards due to their allergenic and carcinogenic effects of serious environmental pollution.
( Nazarpoor, and Karimi,19 (2011) 1045 ).
The use of non-allergic, non-toxic, antimicrobial and eco-friendly natural dyes on textiles has become
a matter of significant importance. (Prusty, Trupti, & Nayak, Das, 18 (2010) 1750) The consumers,
the world over have realized the importance of eco-friendly, biodegradable natural dyes which are
being encouraged and preferred by everyone. (Gupta, Khare, & Laha, 120 (2004) 167).Natural dyes
have no health hazards or disposal problems but on the contrary act as a health care. Benefits of
using natural dyes and finishes for textiles can be numerous.

I.III. Statement of the Study

The main purpose of the study is to utilize aloe vera for dyeing fabrics . specifically, It attempts to
answer the following research questions:
1. How effective is aloe vera dye?
2. How effective it is compared to commercial dye?
3. Is there a significant difference between aloe vera for dyeing fabrics and commercial
dyes?

I.IV. Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

I.V Significance of the Study

The result of the study will benefit the following

 Users-The result of the study will help people to use an alternative to dye using aloe vera for
dyeing fabrics.
 Dye Production Company-The result of the study will dye production companies to discover
the idea of producing dye with a more organic and eco-friendly alternative.
 Future Researchers- The result of the study will help future researchers to create future
studies about Aloe vera and its benefits to mankind.
I.VI Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited only to the utilization of aloe vera for dyeing fabrics, aloe vera utilized in making
natural dyes. The study will be conducted in the residence of the researcher at Purok 3-A, Crossing,
Libona, Bukidnon in March 2023 to April 2023. Dye testing will on the product is performed by the
researcher with the use of several pieces of cloth testing the fastness with different quantities used.

The result of the study is interpreted with the effectiveness mean to determine the effectiveness of
the product and test to determine if there is significant mean difference of the product. The 10
percent of level of significance is used due to its higher degree of accuracy 90 percent of realibility.

The result and conclusions drawn are therefore, true too these products and formulation. However,
the results will be used as basis for similar studies that may be conducted in the future.

I.VII. Definition of Terms

Aloe vera:
Aloe vera is a herb with succulent leaves that are arranged in a rosette. The leaves are grey to green
and sometimes have white spots on their surfaces. They have sharp, pinkish spines along their edges
and are the source of the colourless gel found in many commercial and medicinal products.

Utilization:
the action of making practical and effective use of something.

Extracts:
remove or take out, especially by effort or force.
