Loud instruments, such as drums, cymbals, and gongs, are played during the dance. The
loud noise is meant to scare away evil spirits. Two performers wear a lion costume while
dancing to the beat. One person moves the head of the lion, and another person moves
the tail. The dancers' movements often mimic how a lion acts. This makes the lion look
lifelike. Sometimes the dancers make the lion appear as if it is rolling on the ground or
ready to catch prey. Today, many lion dance performers are acrobats. They roll, jump,
and balance on objects such as poles and chairs.

As the lion dances along the street, people from the crowd put red envelopes inside the
lion's mouth. The envelopes contain money for the performers to keep. Also, red is a
lucky color in China. So, many people hope that giving out red envelopes will bring them
good luck.

At times during the dance, the lion finds a bunch of green vegetables that have been
placed on poles or tables near shops. The lion pretends to chew the vegetables but then
sends them back out to the crowd. Like the red envelopes, the green vegetables
