This document discusses several concepts relating to group theory. It asks the reader to (1) discuss the falsifiability of converse statements if an isomorphism exists between two groups G and H, (2) prove that if two groups are isomorphic and one is cyclic then the other must be cyclic, and (3) show that the set of automorphisms of a group G forms a group with respect to composition. It also asks the reader to (4) find the automorphism groups of Z and Z/6Z, (5) find the order of the automorphism group of Z/pZ for a prime p, (6) show a map from R2 to R is a homomorphism and find

(1) Discuss the falsifiability of possible converse statements of the following :
If φ : G → H is an isomorphism then (a) |G| = |H| (b) G is abelian if and only if H is abelian (c) for all x ∈ G, |x| = |φ(x)| What happens if G (and hence H) is a finite group? (2) Prove that if G ∼= H, then G is cyclic if and only if H is cyclic.
(3) Definition Any isomorphism from a group to itself is called an automor-
phism. The set of all automorphisms of G is denoted by Aut(G). Show that Aut(G) is a group w.r.t composition operation.
(4) Find Aut(Z) and Aut(Z/6Z).
(5) Find the order of Aut(Z/pZ× ) for a prime number p. (6) Let π1 : R2 → R be the projection map (x, y) 7→ x. Here R2 is a group w.r.t component-wise operation. Show that π1 is a homomorphism. Find the kernel and image of this map. (7) Show that the map φ : Z → Z/nZ given by m 7→ [m] is a surjective homomorphism. Find the kernel and image of this map.
