A Little Princess
(Adapted from “A Little Princess” by Francis Hodgson Burnett)
1 When Sara entered the school-room the next morning everybody looked at
her with wide, interested eyes. The other girls knew that she was Miss
Minchin’s show pupil and was considered a credit to the school. Lavinia
had managed to pass Sara’s room when the door was open, and had seen
5 Sara’s maid opening a box which had arrived late from some shop.
“It was full of petticoats with lace frills on them,” she whispered to her
friend Jessie. “I saw her shaking them out. I heard Miss Minchin say that
her clothes were so grand that they were ridiculous for a child. My
mamma says that children should be dressed simply.”
A We are told that Sara is Miss Minchin’s “show pupil” (line 6).
What is the meaning of this phrase?

1 A woman in the Chinese city of Chongqing, is being labelled the new “Tiger
Mum” by media outlets, because she has created a strict 18 hour schedule for
her 9 year old son.
The phrase, “Tiger Mothers”, has been used to describe mothers who use par-
5 ticularly demanding methods in order to raise their children to be high-achiev-
ers. These methods can involve insulting children for low-levels of achieve-
ment and even rejecting birthday cards from their children that are considered
to be below standard.
The parent, whose last name is Liu, posted the grueling schedule online and
10 has received many hateful comments that criticise her parenting. A typical
weekday involves the boy getting up at 5am, taking extra English classes aside
from the ones he takes at school, finishing his homework as well as receiving
extra homework. Weekends are spent either doing Chinese calligraphy or
practising the piano, learning how to swim and preparing for the International
Mathematical Olympiad. Sleep is also in short-supply as he is only allowed 6
15 hours.
Liu states, that she was surprised at the online commenters. She also asserted
that her methods are working well, that her child is not too tired at school and
that him working hard now would pay dividends in the future. For instance,
his piano lessons would help him to develop creatively and also help him to
20 find a girlfriend in the future.
She urged parents to pursue her methods, saying: "After reflecting upon wheth-
er I was too strict, I came to the conclusion that it was not a problem as long
as my child benefits."
