Introduction
In this project presentation we will present what is the preventive maintenance in
machinery for the company PROCESA which is a company where there are many
conveyor belts for the long process or the different processes involved in the
production of tuna. During our stay we observed the different problems presented
in the belts and which led to a stoppage of production at a certain time and would
be a problem for the company because there would be no way to replenish the
processing time.
To avoid any kind of problem, preventive maintenance should be carried out from
time to time, in order to perform them effectively, below, we will give you some
maintenance tips for conveyor belts, the maintenance should be carried out by
trained technicians, either in-house or from an external company.
Corrections can be made more easily and measures taken to avoid production
problems in the future, this allows for greater reliability and optimizes the service
life of any conveyor belt model.
HOW TO PERFORM AN INSPECTION?
There are four specific questions to ask when inspecting the belt for wear
damage: The first question is Is the conveyor belt complete? One of the main
parts of the conveyor belt that can be damaged is the belt, so your inspection
should be very thorough, if you can see any damage, belts are not in good
condition, if pulleys, idlers, profiles and slider bed, if bearings and rollers are
incomplete, these are signs that maintenance is required on the belt and replace
parts as needed.
A worn bearing could be, for example, the reason why the belt is moving to one
side, causing more wear, take the time to adjust and repair the smaller details of
the machine, as these are the ones that in the long run can represent the most
serious damage to the equipment.
The second question to ask is: Is the conveyor belt centered on the conveyor? A
conveyor belt must be centered for optimal conveying of products, regardless of
their nature.
The third question to ask is Does the conveyor belt adequately transport the
products? A belt may work well when it is empty, but with the weight of the
materials it is carrying it begins to slip. If a belt slips or rubs at a certain point,
frictional heat can develop and, in the worst case, begin to melt the belt material
or wear it excessively. Therefore, they should adjust the belt with and without
products.
Finally, they should ask themselves if the belt is clean? According to the turn of
the companies and the materials being transported some belts are more hygienic
than others, e.g. those carrying food, therefore it is important to clean both the
belt and the parts with which they are in regular contact.
Uneven surfaces, rips or cracks are all places where bacteria can potentially grow
and also decrease the lifetime of the equipment; dirt and substances entering the
belt can lead to product contamination. Therefore, you should always carefully
inspect and clean the belt.
INSPECTION FREQUENCY
How often they should inspect the conveyor belt depends on several factors: the
type of application, the environment in which the belt operates, the size of the
load and how often the belt is used; some belts operate in more demanding
environments with extreme ambient temperatures, such as ovens; other belts
carry very heavy products or products containing toxic chemicals; and some need
to be resistant to harsh detergents.
Here the more experienced engineers and technicians will determine the
frequency of inspection and maintenance, the personnel in charge of that position
(there are certain people on each of the belts and they oversee the production
work, they are regular people) will alert the technician or engineer to arrive to
examine, inspect and service your machine at all levels if necessary.
“In order to work with preventive maintenance on conveyor belts we must, first of
all, have a census of our conveyor. After the census we should make routine visits
that allow us to visualize the state of things based on what was initially surveyed.”
Conclusion
During the time of stay we realized the work that was done in the production area,
as well as in the maintenance office, there were certain scheduled tasks but their
time was too saturated to fulfill all the tasks because there were days of delay
due to failures in the belts and they had to take care of solving the problem. That
is why we opted for this idea, since it would solve certain problems efficiently on
the conveyor belts.
