Que 1) Aqueous acetone (CB0 = 1000 mol/m31, vl = 10-4 m31/s) and hydrogen (1 atm, vg = 0.04 m3 g/s, HA
= 36845 Pa.m3 l/mol) are fed to the bottom of a long, slender column (5-m high, 0.1-m2 cross section)
packed with porous Raney nickel catalyst (dp = 5 ×10-3 m cat, ρs = 4500 kg/m3 cat, fs = 0.6, De= 8 × 10-10
m3 l/m cat. s) and kept at 14⁰C. At these conditions acetone is hydrogenated to propanol according to the
reaction

Que 2) Hydrogen gas is bubbled into an agitated tank (V, = 2 m3r) containing liquid butynediol (CB0=
2500 mol/m31) plus a dilute suspension of palladium-impregnated porous catalyst pellets (dp = 5 X 10-5 m
cat, ρs = 1450 kg/m3 cat, De= 5 X 10-10m3 l/m cat .s, fs = 0.0055). Hydrogen dissolves in the liquid ( HA
= 148000 Pa.m3 l/mol) and reacts with the butynediol on the catalyst surface as
follows:

and at 35°C

Unused hydrogen is recompressed and recirculated, and the whole operation takes place at 1.46 atm and
35°C. Find out how long it will take for 90% conversion of reactant.
Additional Data
The mass transfer rates are given as

Que 3) Predict the conversion of glucose to sorbitol in a stirred slurry reactor using pure hydrogen gas at
200 atm. and 150ºC. The catalyst used is porous Raney nickel, and under these conditions, the reaction
proceeds as follows

Data:
Gas stream: vg = 0.2 m3/s, HA= 277 600 Pa. m3/mol
Liquid stream: vl = 0.01 m3/s, CB0 = 2000 mol/m3
Reactor: Vr = 2 m3, fs = 0.056
Catalyst: dp = 10 μm, ρs = 8900 kg/m3, De= 2 ×10-9 m3/m cat.s
Kinetics: (kAgai)g+l = 0.05 s-1, kAc= 10-4 m/s

Que 4) Aniline is to be hydrogenated in a three-phase fluidized bed of porous clay particles

impregnated with nickel catalyst. The well-agitated batch of liquid is kept at 130ºC by
heat exchanger tubes passing through the fluidized bed, and by bubbling hydrogen
vigorously and at a high rate through the bed at 1 atm. According to Govindrao and
Murthy, at these conditions reaction proceeds as follows:

Find the time needed for 90% conversion of this batch of aniline.
Data:
Gas stream: pure H2 at 1atm, HA= 28 500 Pa. m3/mol
Batch of liquid: CB0 = 1097 mol/m3
Reactor: fg = 0.10, fl= 0.65, fs = 0.25
Catalyst: dp = 300 μm, ρs = 750 kg/m3, De= 8.35 × 10-10 m3/m cat.s
Kinetics: (kAgai)g+l = 0.04 s-1, kAc= 10-5 m/s
Assume that the fraction of NH, in the gas stream is very small at any time.

Que 5) Trickle bed oxidation. Dilute aqueous ethanol (about 2-3%) is oxidized to acetic acid by the
action of pure oxygen at 10atm in a trickle bed reactor packed with palladium-alumina catalyst pellets and
kept at 30°C. According to the reaction proceeds as follows:

with rate
Find the fractional conversion of ethanol to acetic acid if gas and liquid are fed to the top of a reactor in
the following system:
Gas stream: vg = 0.01 m3/s, HA = 86 000 Pa.m3/mol
Liquid stream: vl = 2 × 10-4 m3/s, CB0= 400 mol/m3
Reactor: 5 m high, 0.1 m2 cross section, fs = 0.58
Catalyst: dp = 5 mm, ρs = 1800 kg/m3, De= 4.16 × 10-10 m3/m cat.s
Kinetics: kAgai = 2 × 10-4 mol/m3•Pa•s, kAgai = 0.02 s-1, kAc= 3.86 × 10-4 m/s

Que 6) Write the performance equations for reactors used for gas-liquid reactions on solid
catalysts for the following cases:
i) For reactant liquid B used in excess for plug flow of gas A and any flow of liquid B &
ii) For reactant gas A used in excess for plug flow of liquid B and any flow of gas A.

Que 7) Discuss in brief factors to be considered in selecting a contactors for G/L Reactions on Solid
Catalysts.
