SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATH V

Prepared by: Niñia Q. Bermudez

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
A. Understand the steps of how to solve addition of Dissimilar Fractions
B. Analyses and understand the process in solving word problem involving addition of
dissimilar fraction.
C. Work cooperatively with the group activities.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
TOPIC: Addition of Dissimilar Fractions
REFERENCE: The New Mathematics
MATERIALS: Visual Aids, Manila Paper, Pentelpen
VALUE FOCUS: Critical thinking, Cooperation
III. PROCEDURE
A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES
● Prayer
● Greetings
● Checking of Attendance
● Review
B. MOTIVATION
Ask the students if they can still identify similar fractions given the set of fractions.
Using a flash card, the students should identify whether a set of fractions is a SIMILAR
FRACTIONS by showing a HAPPY FACE or DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS by showing a
SAD FACE.
Possible Example:
1/2+3/5
1/4+2/4
2/10+3/10
7/8+2/3
6/9+2/3
2/6+1/6
C. LESSON PROPER
How can we add fractions with dissimilar fraction?
So, if the denominators are not the same, you have to find the lcd or the least common
denominator by finding first the least common multiples of the two denominators, then add
and simplify.
1/3+1/6 = 2/6+1/6 = 3/6 or 1/2 3/10+2/6 = 9/30+10/30= 19/30
3: 3,6,9,12,15,... 10: 10,20,30,40
6: 6,12, 6: 6,12,18,24,30
LCM= 6 LCM= 30

Example no.1
Eehjay walked 1/2 of a mile yesterday and 2/4 of a mile today. How many miles has
Eehjay walked?
Solution:
1/2+2/4= 2/4+2/4= 4/4 or 1
2: 2,4,8,...
4: 4,
LCM is 4

Example no. 2
Rhea has 3/5 of soil, while Kenneth has 2/6 of soil for their garden. How much do
they have for their garden all together?
Solution:
3/5+2/6 = 18/30 + 10/30 = 28/30 or 14/15
5: 5,10,15,20,25,30,..
6: 6,12,18,24,30,
LCM is 30

Example no. 3
Abby ordered pizza. So far, she has eaten 3/9 of the large pizza. Her boyfriend has
eaten 1/6 of the large pizza. How much of the pizza has been eaten so far?
Solution:
3/9 + 1/6 = 6/18+3/18 = 9/18 or 1/2
9: 9,18,27,..
6: 6,12,18
LCM is 18

Example no. 4
The boys made a pile of snowballs. Donny made 1/3 of the snowballs and Daniel
made 1/5 of the snowballs. How much do they snowballs made?
Solution:
1/3+1/5 = 5/15 + 3/15 = 8/15
3: 3,6,9,12,15
5: 5,10,15
LCM is 15

Example no. 5
Josh drink 1/8 of litres of juice and April drink 3/4 litres of juice. How much juice do
they drink altogether?
Solution:
1/8+3/4 = 1/8 + 6/8 = 7/8
8: 8,16,..
6: 4,8
LCM is 8

D. Generalization
I have learned in adding dissimilar fractions, if the denominators are not the same, you
have to use equivalent fractions which do have a common denominator. You need to find the
least common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators. Rename the fractions with a
common denominator, then add and simplify if needed.
E. APPLICATION
Divide the class into 4 groups. Each group will pick a question from the mystery box. Tell
them to read carefully and answer the problem, show the solution and they are going to
explain. In scoring each group will be using rubrics.

GROUP 1
Mary is preparing a final exam. She study 2/3 hours on
Saturday and ½ hours on Sunday. How many hours she studied
over the weekend?

GROUP2
The recipe also calls for 3/8 of a tablespoon of butter and 1/3 of
a tablespoon of margarine. How much of a tablespoon is the
butter and margarine together?

GROUP 3
The recipe to make cookies for 3/9 of a cup of brown sugar and
2/3 of a cup of white sugar. How much of a cup of sugar is this?

GROUP 4
Diana draw a self portrait. She did 2/5 of the portrait on
Tuesday and 1/6 of the portrait on Wednesday. How much has
she done?

IV. EVALUATION
Activity No. 1 : Solve each fraction and show your solution.
1. ¼ + ½
2. 4/6 + 2/9
3. 7/9 + 2/3
4. ¾ + 1/8
5. 3/8 + 7/10

Activity No. 2 : Read each problem carefully and show your solution.
1. June had baked brownies on weekend. He took 3/20 of the brownies to school on Monday
and he gave 7/20 of the brownies to her neighbor. How much of the brownies did she gave
away?
2. Allen walks 3/5 of a mile in the morning and 2/7 of a mile in the evening. What is the total
distance Allen has walked?
3. Drew and Maddie were filling the class raised garden bed with soil. Drew shoveled in 1/3
of a cubic yard, and Maddie shoveled in ½ of a cubic yard. How much soil did they put into
the garden bed all together?

V. ASSIGNMENT
Answer the following: Find the LCM
1. 1/12 + 2/6
2. 3/4 + 2/8
3. 5/8 + 3/16
4. 9/20+ 1/4
