6.0 BLASTING AND SPRAY PAINTING EQUIPMENTS

6.1 Blast cleaning and spray equipment shall be used fully in accordance with Manufacturer’s
recommendations. The air feed, blasting and spray painting hoses shall incorporate a suitable anti-
static material in their construction. The guns shall be fully earthed and spark proofed on each
occasion when they are used. All other precautions shall be taken to prevent any build-up of
electrostatic charge.
6.2 Blasting nozzles shall be fitted with a Deadpan’s Handle located as close to the blast nozzle as
practical. Paint spray guns shall be fitted with effective Manufacturer’s trigger lock and tip guards.
6.3 Areas in which blast cleaning is carried out shall be sheeted in with adequate barricades as
necessary from a safety purposes and to minimize contamination of adjacent areas, warning signs
shall be displayed.

7.0 SURFACE PREPARATION

7.1 Surface shall be completely free from rust, mill scale, grease, weld spatter, weld slag, dirt, dust, oil
and any other foreign matter and to be dry at time of application.
7.2 Blast cleaning shall not be conducted when the temperature of the surface is less than 3°C above the
dew point temperature or the relative humidity of the air is greater than 85%.
7.3 The cleaning method employed shall not result in thinning of the steel structure / pipe wall beyond
the limits of the specification. Blast cleaning surface standard to Sa 2.5, Wire brush (surface
according to ST2) is accepted.
7.4 Cleaning shall be carried out immediately before application of the priming coat.

8.0 PAINT APPLICATION / REPAIR COATING

GENERAL

8.1 The Contractor shall ensure that the Manufacturer’s Material Safety Data Sheets and Product data
sheet statements are available for all paints, solvents, chemicals and abrasives used throughout the
work period.
8.2 Paint shall be used in strict rotation as they were delivered or by use of earliest Batch Numbers
first and containers shall remain unopened until required for use.
8.3 Mixing in open containers shall be done in a well-ventilated area.
8.4 Thinners shall not be added unless necessary for proper application in accordance with the Paint
Manufacturer’s instructions. Where thinner is used, it shall be the type recommended by Paint
Manufacturer and shall be added during the mixing process.
8.5 Generally painting /Coating shall only be done when the surface temperature is 3 ºC above the dew
point, The relative humidity should be less than 80%.In any case, the Paint Manufacturer’s
instructions, with regard to weather conditions, will be followed at all times.
8.6 Paint shall not be applied to steel which is at a temperature of over 50 ºC unless the paint is
specifically formulated for applications at the proposed temperature.
8.7 Ensure all Flange ends covered and protected from blasting and painting.
8.8 Paints which does not have a limited pot life or does not deteriorate on standing may be mixed at
any time before using, but if setting or phase separation has occurred it must be remixed
immediately before using.

8.9 Paint shall not be remain in spray pots, painter bucket over night, but shall be stored in a covered
container and remixed before using, the reusing of paint depend upon the pot life.

APPLICATION

8.10 The coat of primer shall be given as soon as possible and before detrimental corrosion or
recontamination, de-oxidation occurs. The cleaned surface shall never be left unprotected
overnight. Any area that have deoxidized shall be prepared by ‘‘Sweep’’ blasting to reinstate the
originally specified standard.
8.11 Each coat shall be allowed to dry or cure before the next coat is applied. The minimum drying time
shall be as laid down by the Paint Manufacturer for the type of paint in use.
8.12 Application may be by conventional spraying, airless spraying, roller or brushing, in accordance
with the Paint Manufacturer’s recommendations. The work will be carried out by competent
operatives, using purpose made equipment.
8.13 For brush application brush used shall be of a style and quality that will enable proper application
of coating, not have a width over five inches.
8.14 All attempts shall be made to minimize brush marks and other surface irregularities.
8.15 Any coat exposed up freezing, excess humidity, rain or snow before curing, shall be allowed to dry,
the damaged area shall be removed by blasting and a new coat shall be applied.
8.16 Coating shall be worked into all crevices and corners.
8.17 Coating shall not be started until that section of line has been tested and accepted.

REPAIR OF DAMAGED PAINT WORK

8.18 The damaged areas of paintwork shall be gently abraded back to the sound coating using emery
paper or a fine grinder. These areas shall then be wiped with a suitable solvent, to remove all
debris. The periphery of the repair areas shall be feathered back for a minimum distance of 25mm
into the adjacent undamaged coating by light abrasion or grinding, to produce a smooth chamfered
surface profile for the repair coating.
8.19 The prepared partially or completely damaged areas of the coating shall then be repaired by the
local application as per to the paint manufacturer data sheet and to the requisite number of coats
of paint to obtain the original coating system and thickness.

9.0 COATING SYSTEM

IQWQ-KT-RSPDS-00-290203 Specification Painting Requirement procedure (ExxonMobil) will be used
for coating system

10.0 ANSI/ASME A13.1 Standard Label Colours

The current version of the ANSI / ASME code uses a pipe labelling standards colour code chart with six
standard colour combinations, and four user-defined combinations, as shown in the table below. The
colours are based on the contents of the pipe; in general, the most hazardous feature of the contents
should determine the colours used.
