“Here’s how it is!” REVISIT: ELEMENTS OF ART

FORM

Forms are three-dimensional (length, width, height) and can be viewed from many
angles.1 Spheres, boxes, and pyramids are forms.2 Form can be actual or implied.
 Actual form, is a work that you can see from all sides. sculpture
3
 Implied form, created with shading and modeling.

In this lesson, we will work on implied form or a type of form created with shading
and modeling techniques.

As an artist, one must be creative in applying the element of form to create a three-
dimensional (3D) illusion in a two-dimensional space like drawing and painting. An implied
form must create a vision of length, width and height in an artwork.4

Geometric forms have specific names Organic forms do not have specific names
associated with them and associated with them and are often
are typically man-made. Associated with naturally occurring forms.

To create the illusion of form, you as an artist must understand how light reacts on an
object. Light reacts on objects and is communicated to viewers through several factors.
Adjusting these areas with values of the local color will result in the illusion of form in a
drawing or painting.4

Highlight - The area where
light is hitting the object
directly.
 Midtone - The middle value
of the local color of the
object.
 Core shadow - The area(s)
that is shaded on the object.
 Cast shadow is the area(s)
that is shaded on surrounding objects and surfaces
because of blocked light.4
